Well, I just mowed my first lawn. And i`m tired. I got one of those old-fashioned reel mowers. I couldn`t stand the idea of walking behind a noisy, gas-powered thing. (I don`t even use a blowdryer because I hate the noise.) But boy, am I ever hot.

Have a look at the electric ones - much quieter. You just have to be careful that you don`t run across the cord in your excitement.

Drink water. Lots. And bravo for you for doing your yardwork; what a good workout!

I have started hiring a service to do my lawn (its my one luxury - I do everything else myself) - but I used to use a Neuton Electric Mower.. very quiet, no need to buy smelly gas, easy to start, and it was so easy to push. You can see them at: http://www.drpower.com/CSTM_Neuton_Home2.aspx?src=IP00024

I forgot to mention they run on a battery so there is no cord to run over.

I too use a cordless electric. Easy to start and push, quiet and no gas fumes.

My father, king of the weekend warriors, could never get the gas mower to start the first time... so he bought an electric. He HAS run over the cord, and is still here to tell about it, so the risks, while real, are probably not that terrible, even if you get the one with the cord...
I do applaud the reel mower. They have a nice noise (Dad had one of those for a while, too.)and they don`t increase our use of resources. (I am a total sinner, DH mows my lawn and we have whatever kind of mower we were given by the neighbor - electric, I think. DH is NOT the kind of guy who would run over the cord. However, my point is that I truly am applauding here - I certainly have no claim to virtue in the lawn department...)So I would say, use it for as long as you like, including till you are 100, or get an electric one, if you prefer, but probably, in both cases, avoid mowing the lawn in the heat of the day! T, who HATES to sweat. It`s a Joad thing...

I love the sound of a reel mower. If I close my eyes and hear one, I`m a kid again. I most definitely would need a battery powered electic. I am just the kind of person to run over the cord. Good advice not to mow in the heat of the day. I`m a late afternoon or early morning cutter, with lots of Gatorade. Benne

We got a new mower last year and I know that its not "green" but it does work for us. DH was against getting an electric one cuz he didnt want to risk running over a cord. We have a gas mower but it has an electric start so I dont have to pull the cord. It is really nice and I like to mow the lawn now. We take turns. Its a good break from the inside work for me so I like it.

Actually, I should have said that the reel mower works great. Really. It cuts cleanly and evenly and supposedly the reel mower cut is better for the grass, as it works just like a pair of scissors and cuts neatly.
So, I`ve chosen the mower and will stick with it.
It`s just that the "power" for the mower is an absolute out of shape wimpette. That and being outdoors and being hot.....

There`s nothing that says you can`t mow the front yard one day, and the back another.....! ;-)
