MacChick,
You never cease to amaze me with your creativity! What a beautiful hat--and the perfect solution for those who find wool hats itchy. Love the idea of the Esprit cotton lining. Did you plan it this way from the beginning, and thus make the HW outer part slightly larger than head size? How is the Esprit liner sized in relation to the head size (i.e., exactly to fit, or less to allow for elastic content)?
Looks like it would be warm, too!

It was planned this way: DD complains about itch. She`s not a whiner and her forehead gets all red, so I tend to believe she shouldn`t have to just "suck it up," but that I should find a solution.

Made a snug-fitting "skullcap" out of Esprit on size 2 circ needle, then switched to HW and size 4 needle, but kept the stitch count exactly the same, did some Bohus designs (so hat would start to look full and not "skinhead") then switched to size 6 needle and did a bunch of different lace stitch patterns (so hat would really puff out a bit), then back to Bohus designs and size 4 needle (to taper back down in shape again), then down to size 2 and some actual decreasing, so top wouldn`t need to be bunched or gathered to a close. Makes a nice flat spot for the pom-pom.

Then I picked up all the stitches just before the transition to HW, and knit about 8 rows of moss stitch for a hat band... this was to give definition to the edge and to make sure no actual wool rolled under and pressed against the forehead. (I experimented with this `pick up and knit a band` on last summer`s bathing suit fiasco... a disaster there, but I knew the idea would be a gem for something besides a bathing suit, and a hat band was it!)

Last winter, i tried Uros and a few other things for hat liners (Uros and HW were the best, BTW, until I used the Esprit) and I found that if the outer layer is snug against the liner layer (as in a Uros liner and an Elements outer layer), the outer layer itched its way right through the liner... so that`s why I wanted to make this one puff out away from the liner as much as possible. This is TOTALLY Itch-Free!!!!

What I would do different is to make the liner even a tad bit more snug... it fits me better than it fits DD... but she has a big head and will fill it up pretty soon, I think! I aimed for just slightly smaller than the usual hat size, I believe I cast on only two or four stitches less than I would`ve done in wool... Esprit could take more of a size reduction than even that... I would go with about a 10% reduction in number of sts next time... gotta wait for more Esprit, though! This only took one ball, but ALL I have left is the remnants of a tiny bit of lilac, white, and orchid, and DD wants them to be striped peds for her, so no more Esprit hats until next time we see Esprit... but all who are interested should save some HW aside for this marriage of yarns... it makes a really comfy hat!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!! And since are both Elann yarns, the colors will probably be coordinating to some degree!

Great job MacChick - itchy hatbands aren`t much fun!! Now she`ll have visions of snowflakes dancing in her head. You`ll have to get her out of that desert!! Where are you going to go?

Good thinking Michelle! I was looking a few weeks ago for more Esprit myself. That was the one yarn DH was enamoured with!

The hat looks terrific, and you are very clever to arrive at the puffy liner as a solution!

Ingenious, MacChick! Thanks for the details on how you did it, won`t feel like re-inventing the wheel, if I try it. I`m going to go back and read your posts last winter about the hat liners & knit bands.

I am taking notes here...Thanks for taking the time to expand on your beautiful creative useful works (I could go on and on, but I`d better go knit or I`ll never finish my pressies in time...).
