The place I found that has the Himalyan recycled silk yarn has a minimum order. I have to get at least 5 kilos (am I ordering silk or what?). The price is $40.00 per kilo plus shipping. Anybody interested in spliting an order with me? I`m willing to pay for the shipping to my place if you will pay for the shipping to you. You can contact me directly at garmonfamilyfarm@earthlink.net.

Now - back to harvest - we have market tomorrow!

Could you send the link to that website again? Also, if I recall from my visit to the website, they don`t provide a whole lot of information about the yarn. Do you know something more about it, or are you just going to experiment with it? I was kind of intrigued by the yarn and might be interested in going in on the deal.

the link is http://www.rugsandcrafts.com/ and it appears to be the exact yarn I used to make a Himalyan Fishtail bag. You can buy the patterns here and see what the yarn looks like knitted up here and at rugs website. It is a little difficult to work with and not a very even yarn but worth it (I think at least). Knitted up it is very striking and people really ooohh and aaahhh over it. Let me know if you do want to go in on it. If I can find a couple (2-3) of people willing to take 1 kilo lots ($40.00 each) it would be doable for me. I went on Ebay and these are going for $9-20 a Skein! I guess if I had the time I could ebay what I don`t need right off but this time of year it`s out of the question!

Now to go make bouquets for market tomorrow (YUCK!!!!!!! - after the first 10 of the season I am so OVER IT!)

This might be helpful "Approximately 80 yards (170m) to each 100 grams (3.53 ozs)-- this is approximate as each skein is different. Suggested needle size is 5mm (US 8) to 6mm (US 10) or larger. On US 10 needles, works approx. 3 sts per inch. This yarn is a bulky tightly spun single." There is a 900gr lot on ebay that is presently at $71.00 with almost 4 hours to go - I wonder what it will get up to?

The rugs website has pictures of scarves and hats. Do you think it would make comfortable, non-shedding scarves & hats? I got some made-from-remnants-type silk fabric a couple years ago and it was gorgeous, but a total mess: it was lumpy and had bits of grass, paper, leaves, and a lot of staples (!!!) in it, and it shed bits of stuff (silk and non-silk) everywhere.

So, again, do you think it would make good scarves (scarves that are comfortable to wear and don`t shed all over the place), or would it be better for non-garment items like purses?

Thanks.

Corinna I recently purchased some of this yarn on ebay and I received it today. I am having an awful time trying to wind it into balls. Do you have any tips to make this easier?

What I did was try to open the skein and untangle into it`s circular loops as much as possible. Then I held it with me knees and wound it into balls. It wasn`t too bad once I took the time to try to get the skein back in it`s circular shape.

I`m not sure of the shedding since I made a purse with it. But I didn`t notice any sheeding from the purse. I did not find any grass, paper, leaves, or staples in it! The only problem I really had was the fact that you`d be knitting along and the yarn would break. Then I`d rip back a few stitches, reattach and keep going. The unevenness makes it a challenge to knit but ask anyone on this chatroom about me and challenges! If I do get an order I`m thinking of doing some scarves in it. I think they would be fabulous! I just don`t want to pay Ebay prices nor do I think it would be good idea to order 5 kilos right off the bat (my stash is big enough right now).

Just got an email re: the silk. There are 5 200gram skeins per kilo. If the skein is similar to the one I used it will make one fish tail purse (the trinket bags seems to use less as well as a few of the other patterns). So that means $8 in materials per purse. I would imagine two skeins per scarf.

I had purchased some for a friend and myself. I wanted really bright colors and she wanted more muted colors. (where I got it was helpful that way) mine was more silk remnants hers looked as if it had jute mixed in. she made a shawl that she just hangs off the back of a chair because the shedding is so bad, however I made a scarf and it didn`t really shed at all. I guess they are all different.

Hi Corinna, I am interested in sharing part of the 5 kilo order. I saw the showcase vest that was Cheryl Oberle`s collection related to her book, FOLK VESTS. The recycled silk vest had visible knots (quite attractive too) as part of the finished work. When the strands come apart, an attractively placed knot is no doubt the best thing, given the quality of this silk. The price seems reasonable altho I haven`t priced what is available at LYS. Contact me at jsc716@terra.com about the sharing cost and postage.
