Can anybody tell me the best place to buy recycled silk yarn so I can make some Himalyan trinket bags to sell at market? I don`t have loads of time to search it out right now (or all summer for that matter) so any help you guys can provide would be greatly apprectiated!
p.s. I know I must be tired - I haven`t had a chance or even desire to pick up any knitting project in the past 5 days!

Corinna I`ve checked several sellers on the internet and it seems that the standard price for this yarn is 16.00 a skein. There are a few sellers on ebay: http://search.ebay.com/recycled-silk-yarn_Silk_W0QQbsZSearchQQcatrefZC6QQfromZR2QQsacategoryZ36598QQsapricehiZQQsapriceloZQQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZbsQQsosortorderZ1QQsosortpropertyZ1QQsotrZ2 There is also a review of this yarn at Knitters Review that you might want to read. http://knittersreview.com/article_yarn.asp?article=/review/product/010517_a.asp

I swatched with US 7 (4.5mm) seed stitches, it turned out very nice and solid, will be good for hand bags.

I went to ebay and input "recycled silk yarn" - there were a lot of responses, with prices ranging from low to high. Most, but not all responses, were about the Himalayan stuff. The skeins were of various sizes (3 oz, 6.5 oz etc.) and it`s worth a look.

I think the yarn you are referring to is "Tibet Silk" by Himalaya Yarns. It is available from Patternworks (www.patternworks.com). They are a very reliable company to deal with. I used to order from them fairly often before I discovered Elann! It is pretty pricey stuff though $16.00 (US) for only 80 yards.

Ellen,
Did you look at the Barbara Walker books? What did you think? Having her books and color pictures too would be the best of both worlds. I want to get the Harmony Guides next. A knitaholic and a bilbliophile all in one person. lol Benne

Hi Benne,
I was able to get Barbara Walker`s Fourth Treasury from the library here. It was fascinating. I didn`t realize that she was the same person who wrote "The Woman`s Dictionary of Symbols" and "The Woman`s Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets." She has combined both her interests in the "Treasury" books. I don`t think I have ever seen anything quite like it. I read many of Joseph Campbell`s books so this is really quite interesting for me. Thanks for the tip! I worked most of my life in a college library so I am a bookaholic and a knitliophile also.

Hi Ellen,
My personal favorite of BW`s stitch guides is wolume 2. I just get lost in it every time I pick it up. How in the world did you ever get any work done working in a college library? lol Benne

I found a place that sells the recycled silk. Here are the particulars they sent me. They come in about 200 grams skein and are sold by kilos. Its $40.00 per kilo. Shipping cost will depend on the quantity. Basically we only charge actual cost of shipping through UPS or we can even use your UPS account if you have one. Do you guys think this is a good cost?

I don`t know what the yarn`s like, but $2.00/50g (I`m doing my math right, aren`t I?) it sounds like a pretty good deal for silk!

Don`t you divide 40.00 by 1,000 grams (one kilo gram) to get price per gram or is that backwards? If so then the $2.00 per skein would be right. I wonder how much I`d have to buy at one time.
here`s the link - http://www.rugsandcrafts.com/silkyarn.html
tell me what you think.

Hi, 5 200gr skeins = 1 kilo (1000 grams) so each skein would be $8. But that is $2 per 50 grams. 50 grams = about 1.75 oz. One kilo is 2.2 lbs. SOunds like a good price if it`s the recyled yarn that is so popular these days. Jamie
