First, let me say that if Ann would travel, I would go THERE. However, she says she`s pretty shy, and I don`t particularly want to overwhelm her. And alas, elann is strictly mail-order, no store-front.
So the question is-shall we meet at a sanctioned event-like a TKGA convention, or Stitches Midwest, or a Knit-out in Oklahoma?
If not, shall we meet in the near proximity to a yarn producer?
Interlacements in Colorado Springs Fiesta in New Mexico Brown Sheep in Nebraska
Or any other "factory" outlet...if you know where some are, speak up!
Or we could all save our $$ and go on a GOOD vacation-like Vogue to Italy...or GO VISIT JEAN! (I can get us thru the German train system just fine, as can Chris) She just has to find us a suitable gast-haus-maybe we could take the train into a good "yarn town" into Bavaria??? Or can we tour the Adriafil factory in Italy? Wow!
What time of year? (Forget any time from Halloween on....we`re supposed to knit for Christmas)
Inputs, girls? (The mind boggles)

To facilitate a weekend getaway, one thing to consider would be going someplace that is (relatively) inexpensive/uncomplicated to get to. Major airline hub, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago.... My recent jaunt to Savannah made it clear just how complicated travel can be. While it truely was a wonderful place to visit, those that flew directly had expensive tickets, the rest of us had 4-6 hour flights (with layovers) followed by 2+ hour drives from Jacksonville.

I completely agree with Chris about the INEXPENSIVE/uncomplicated issue. But I kinda like the idea of seeing Jean. I could use my Junior high german language skills. Don`t you think that would be handy?lol
I`m rather torn on location. Meeting at a conference would be nice, but might be overwhelming. Trying to knit, trying to get to seminar/classes, trying to talk with everyone, and eventually not just dropping into a stupor from exhaust. the idea of meeting close to an outlet would be great. New Mexico would be fun and maybe even Point Roberts and converge on Ann. After all if Ann won`t come to us we can go to her. Heather

Ok,
(Mumbles and draws circles on ground with big toe) I got carried away. (But the idea is still open for a thousand possibilities)
I like Chicago, I like Denver, I like Co Spgs (but I have personal reasons to want to go to all those places). Not adverse to Nashville either. If Dallas is easy for a lot of people (besides me!) then Dallas would be good too.
They often have cool buildings to rent in the state parks. (for cheap) More to consider.

I love all the ideas so far, but I would suggest that we start small and find an inexpensive place to meet on this continent. If the purpose is for us to meet each other. When I met up with the fabulous trio at the Wool Festival I was keenly aware that they were here to shop and they had come a long way. I would have loved to have sat down over coffee and visited more, but I did not want to take up their time in the last few hours of the festival.
Being near an outlet or yarn factory would be nice as we are not on a schedule as in attending a convention.
I also think we have to look at this as a series of events that we can do them all, but one at a time..start small and build.
Germany sound wonderful as does Italy, but meeting Jean would be great.
There are also knitting cruises one can sign up for, there is one in September going to Alaska, but Brandon Mabley is the main instructor and i was not so keen on his work. But think, we could have a whole boat to knit on.
Finally, if we are more interested in meeting, knitting maybe touring a factory/outlet, we can go off season and save money. Once we pick a place, we should get a travel agent (I have a good person through AAA) to get a group rate.
These are my ideas, what do the rest of you think?

Hey Bets, I`ll help you out here. I like your idea of Colorado springs. DN went to U. there and I met my sister for "Parents Wkd/Homecoming" and spent 4 days. I loved it. It is a small city- easy to get around- with an airport and Denver (a hub)with car rentals, nearby. There is "Garden of the Gods" for inspiration, Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs about 4 miles away for boutique shopping and quaintness and the best vegetarian restaurant(tho I can`t remember the name), for Eileen. Nearby are a zillion ski resorts which I`d guess, in off season would be great to visit. I think that with a group like ours (kinda chatty) one might not want to have anything too organized like a festival, going on, simply because the social aspect needs to be fed. There is enough talent in the group (and enough yarn) that informal "lessons" from the gang would likely suffice. Comments? So there Bets, does that help ya? Oh ya, the kids said that Manitou springs has the largest number of witches per capita of anywhere in the US!! Les

I agree that we would be better off without a festival or conference - we are our own festival! It would be nice if I could drive there and then I could bring a dog. If not, I think Colorado does sound nice. I like Kentucky also. Lexington is beautiful. If we were to go overseas Iceland would be fun. Icelandair has cheap, cheap fares in the off season & I know a horse farm where we could stay pretty inexpensively. Maybe Ann would come and scout out yarn sources ;-) Cate

Hi All
Renting a big house (castle?) in Europe for a week would be a possibility. Have a look at this site for possibilities. Reduce the search by putting in 14 bedrooms or whatever.

There are some amazing places just waiting for knitters.
Another possibility near here is Camp Columbia on Thetis Island. Out of camper season (July/August), accommodation in a large heritage building for 50 people or more runs about $40CDN per person/per day including ALL MEALS. Hard to beat. Easy access to Vancouver B.C.

Speaking of Thetis Island, I took my kids to visit a friend who`s parents own a resort (vacation cabins, etc) and I have to tell you that Thetis is a little bit of heaven right here on earth! Would be happy to help people get from Vancouver over to Thetis, and I bet Ann would come too!

I love the idea that Alice had! And on a grander scale I like Jean`s idea of visiting her.
But I must admit practicality is more important. Jean would you be able to hop a flight over? Does the army still do those stand-by bare bones flights? Or since 9/11 have they stopped?
All I know is that I would need plenty of time to save! And prepare DH and DS. Which can be tricky. But I`m willing to attempt it! lol Heather

I agree that you shouldn`t try to fit too much in - although we were very relaxed about it and didn`t give ourselves a crazy schedule to stick to, Benne, Theresa and I wholeheartedly agreed that there really hadn`t needed to be a wool festival at all. I think we could have spent those hours chatting, spinning, eating, drinking and knitting in the hotel and STILL felt like the time was too short! Of course, if Benne had turned out to be a nightmare, the festival would have been a welcome remedy for awkward silences - fortunately she was as adolescent as T and I, though, so it turned out not to be a problem! LOL

They still do the Space A flights. The problem is Dan getting any time off of work. He has 25 days use or lose that he has to use between July and September. We`re going to use it when I go to Scotland and then to go camping down in the Alps. I`ll have to wait to join you guys when we get back to the States in a couple of years. Waaa.

Oh, Jean, your pants are on fire!!!!!
I called Kelly Space A today-they have 73 seats to Dover EVERY Monday which go on to Ramstein/Frankfurt-and I think if you check the space A website, you do not have to travel with your sponsor stateside. They lifted that. Perhaps after school starts in the fall, the old retiree can hop over!

Hello from Colorado! Really LOL! Some great ideas here! You all put a big smile on my face! I`m sure that Judy of Interlacements would be happy to see us in Colo Sprgs and Brown Sheep Wool is located in Western Nebraska, not too far off. They offer a tour of the facility and quite a bit of yarn to buy at good prices--but really do we want to buy more yarn!?? I can never resist and am about to be pushed out of my condo! British Columbia sounds grand, and we might even be able to meet Ann. Let`s keep dreaming! Happy knitting! Jamie

Wow!! Really?! No Way!! That`s huge news! I knew about the spouse thing. They started that back when Bosnia. I didn`t know about the Kelly AFB thing (I thought they closed Kelly down?!) That is HUGE. I`ll have to check out how often they have seats empty on that flight. We MAC`d to Dallas eight years ago and didn`t get on the flight back. $1500 later... lol. Shoot. You just made my mother-in-law`s day! lol. She will NOT get on a plane to save her life. Whew Hoo! Maybe I can meet up with you before we move back!
And ABSOLUTELY!! You should try to MAC over after school starts! (You`d never get on a flight right during the summer). Too cool! Peace, Jean Ansbach, Germany
