Opinions please; which is better the newsletter or the knittable samples. As there is a large price difference between the two, can those who subscribe to one or the other let me know what you think.

Patw- Here`s my experience. I found this site and I subscribed to the "samples" right away. It includes the newsletter. It`s kind of like your birthday when it arrives! Quite exciting! Actually, since I don`t like b-days anymore, it`s better than your B-day!!

Four mini skeins are hand tied onto a piece of 8x11 manilla tag paper and the stats of the yarn are there.
The newsletter is a folded 4page glossy black and white
publication with pictures of various patterns to knit in a particular yarn and there is a 4 inch or so sample of each colour of the yarn taped onto the newsletter. And there is a verbal description of the yarn much like you find on the Elann site.
Just "close your eyes and think of England" and do it!!
I can`t remember what the price is but it is listed on this site if you click on "Features", them "Samples"
You`ll love it. Then it gives you time to swatch and dream before the yarns become available!

The samples give you a better idea of what the yarn is actually like. The mini swatch is great because you can check it for itchiness, pilling, washability, etc. BEFORE the yarn sells out in the color YOU want!

Another thing to keep in mind is that you will receive credit vouchers I believe equal to the price of the newsletter or samples ($2.50 off $25.00 purchased)

Newsletter = 7 vouchers
Samples = 19 vouchers

So if you plan on purchasing from the site you will recover the cost of either option.

I say "Go for the samples", I wish I did sooner!

Happy Knitting

I also think the samples are well worth it; you get a much better idea if you really want to purchase an offering or not. With this kind of logic :p, you are actually saving money by narrowing down your choices!
Also, although you don`t get enough to make a 4"x4" gauge swatch, in most cases you are able to deduce what gauge/pattern stitch you`d like to use for the yarn.

Patw,
What everybody else said, in spades. I`m saving ALL of my sample hanks including the ones I swatched (very few, but that`s me) for a really wild crazy quilt afghan down the road (my first subscription doesn`t run out `til August, when I`ll definitely do it again!!!). It has both saved me money and cost me money, in the sense that it gives me a chance to fall in love with yet another yarn(s) every month (sigh). And the vouchers, as noted elsewhere, essentially make the subscription free...
C`mon down, the subscriptions are great!

Hi Patw, I went straight to the knittable samples and am really glad I did for all the reasons already mentioned. As to cost, if you think of it as less than two cups of coffee a month at Starbucks (or similar) the subscription suddenly seems really cheap!
