I have been asked to organize a group of elderly ladies to make items for a bazaar. They are still wanting to make things that sold in the years when their children were growing, in some cases 30 years ago. I would like to guild them to what present days mothers would like to buy for their children. What designs appeal and what NOT to make. Can you help? Thank you very much.

The classic raglan sleeve cardigan is just as desired today as it was 30 years ago... kids don`t outgrow raglan sleeves nearly as fast, and a plain sweater goes with everything from jeans to dressy clothes.
Another timeless classic is the tube sock. A kid never outgrows a tube sock. Plain old spiral tube socks are just as useful today as 30 years ago.
Moms never have enough mittens or hats, because kids never stop finding new places to "tuck" them into... oh, they are never lost... it just might take week to find them...
Pretty much everything that worked 30 years ago still works today. And while you could try to get your group hip with the times by knitting in skittles colors, remember that trendy is often hideous and classic has a wide appeal. Also, a Mom is willing to spend a bit more money on something that will never go out of style and can be handed down through all the kids and even the grandkids.

Hi Lavinia,
Knitted envelope purses or purses of any kind are hot now, also teens are into scarves (maybe with a novelty yarn). Good luck with your bazaar. Benne

Right now it fluctuates between VERY spare (the Gap) or VERY fanciful. If they are making for infants-no lace at the fingers and make it washable.
Granny squares are back in a big way, so that might be a good compromise-purses, hats and scarves for older kids.
hats, scarves,
Either way-color will update an "old design" so a fresh color and "right now" buttons will help!
Good luck! B
Oh-my daugher LOVED the classic fisherman style in a unisex colored yarn for my DGD, and got compliments wherever she went! (Infant/toddler sizes) Click on the bios, and look for my projects link. Also, Family Circle Knitting has some very popular and quick to make things!
Good luck

I think one of the "newest" things is the diaper cover. Knit more or less in the same shape as a diaper, i.e. narrow between the legs, widest at the top back, which bends around the front where the securing buttons are. All sorts of creative motifs can be placed on the front or fanny.

I think a good place to look for ideas would be your nearest Gap store! I think the major difference between what was knit 30 years ago for babies and what is popular now is the COLOR. Try to steer your knitters away from that hideous mint green, petal pink and pastel yellow acrylic (and all the varigated versions in-between). It is god-awful stuff and looks so dated compared to the bright reds, blues, sun-yellows and greens used in the patterns today. I think that the basic styles that the ladies are used to knitting would still be good, minus the "ribbon thru the eyelets", which is considered unsafe for babies these days. Try taking a look at Jil Eaton`s designs (Minnowknits) and Sharon Turner`s Monkeysuits - if not for designs, then for color inspiration. Good luck!
