My mother`s expression for an amazingly large qhantity of something is "Like oil for the Lamps of China" (Because she picked up all her expressions from either her grandmother, born in 1882, or her father, who was a Merchant Seaman for most of his life, they tend to be a little out of date, occassionally a little risque, and possibly not entirely politically pure. I checked this one and it didn`t seem to insult China in any way - I`m sure everyone had oil lamps when great-granny learned this - but if I have missed wome way in which this is objectionable, please forgive me - certainly don`t mean it that way)
Anyway, back to the point, my stash is kind of Oil for the lamps of China. Because of the M-ths (which, it turns out, have not infested everything, just way too much) I am having to go through and clean, organize, redistribute, fondle, contemplate and in other ways deal with my yarn, and my system having sort of broken down, I`m wondering how other people sort, organize and store their stuff.
I have an 4 shelves in an armoire, a hanging basket I could put my son in, 15 22 galon containers, 2 shelves in a bookcase, 2 5-gallon paint barrels, a Very Large cardboard box, and miscellaneous bags...this does not count my unspun wool.... and this should make about half of you feel very virtuous for having such SMALL stashes, and about half of you feeling quite satisfied at having larger stashes, right?LOL
Seriously, I would love to know how many of you are hiding yarn in the well of the car where the spare tire used to be....

In SPACE BAGS-these are the business! These are the stuff. I HIGHLY recommend these, because you can make your stash look SOOOO much smaller. And see thru them. They just don`t work so well on yarn that`s wound around a core.

I store my stash in the bags that my comforters came in. I`ve saved the bags over the years and have several. They are pretty big, are clear and have handles on them. I depleted my stash, or rather the moths, did a few years ago. WOW Theresa that is quite a shop you have!! I am soo jealous.

Theresa...We`re soul mates! I have a stash to kill for, just not enuf time, and end up with yarn all over!! Actually, though, I am keeping it in the lovely plastic bags and boxes from Elann (et al.) Boxes stack nicely, can be hand or type labeled with all the info about what`s inside (I label the top and one side, using yarn name, content, colors and how many, what needles to use, and how to clean it, as well as the price per hank/skein/ball), and can be stacked to the ceiling! I am assuming that the plastic will keep out M-ths, please tell me that`s so! I started a comprehensive list on my comp, but now only have about half the stash "catalogued", so am constantly running across "surprises"...I also found some $15 two-drawer plastic roll around bins at Wal-Mart that are pretty handy, too, but they`re not air tight. One other thing you could do is to annotate the shipping list with the above info and tape it to the outside of the box (which I have done in a few cases, after adding the yardage, content, cleaning, etc., info to the page); Elann provides those great plastic sleeves, but Saran Wrap or other clear plastic over the list would work, too, I think. Lots of luck!

I am `way past the SABLE point, and am trying to work up to selling some of my stuff off on Ebay. :-( I have my stash in large (many-many-gallon, I`m not sure how many offhand) plastic bins with snug lids. I write a description of each type of yarn (manufacturer, fiber, color, total yardage) on a 3x5 card, and keep all the cards for the yarn inside each bin in a little pocket taped to the lid of that bin -- so I can find what I`m looking for without digging through every bin (only have to flip through the cards). The bins are stacked in the attic. I also have a master list of all the yarns in a notebook that I keep downstairs, so I can know what I want to find when I head upstairs ...

Wow, you people are organized! I keep mine in plastic bags (to keep all the skeins together) then keep those in clear plastic suit bags so I can see whats inside. I also store yarn in baskets in the living room, a cedar chest, on a book shelf behind my chair and in baskets scattered around the house...

I do, however (since the moth infestation a couple of years ago) keep cedar sachets everywhere there`s yarn. I buy bags of hamster bedding and sew it into cotton muslim bags that fit on the bottom of whatever container the yarn is in.
