Hi there, I want to make the Hot Damn Afghan http://www.knitting-crochet.com/hotdamn.html and the instructions tell us to have about 700 - 1000 yards of each yarn. I have a huge box of nice "cheapo yarns" that I was hoping to use up, such as Simply Soft by Caron. Nowhere on the band does it tell me how many yards are in one skein. It tells me on the about 75 skeins that I have that there may be 6 oz or 10 oz, and the equivalent weight in grams - 170 g etc, but it doesn`t tell me the yardage.
Short of having to open a skein and measure, any suggestions?
Thanks so much.

I ran into the same problem using acrylics like Red Heart, etc. If you have any clue as to the maker, see if they have a web site...Lion Brand doesn`t list the yardage on the skein wrapper, but I`m pretty sure they tell you yardage on their web site...I think 4 oz is something like 175-220 yards or such like of worsted weight acrylic...you might want to go to Herrschner`s web site and check yarns for similar types to see if they list the yardage. Sorry it`s not much help, but maybe an arrow in the right direction... Fran

There is a niftly gadget you can buy from spinning Suppliers called a McMorran Yarn Balance, and you put a little piece of yarn on it and keep snipping and when it balances perfectly you multiply by some # I don`t remember by now but it`s easy and that gives you I think yards per lb, but it might be yards per ounce: if it is per pound you divide by 16, then multiply by however many ounces you`ve got... I know there is a simpler way to do the Math, but Not for me LOL. I am numerically .... insipid? This handy tool is very nice, but it is 20 dollars or so and you probably don`t want to buy it just for this project. If, however, you know any spinners, they would probably own one.... but then you wouldn`t have needed to post, would you? If you tell me what you`ve got I`ll check my stash, and anything I have I will weigh for you on my balance, and maybe that will be some help? Theresa
