hi, i am a new knitter and need some help..i have alot of this clipso yarn so i am trying to knit the katia calipso summer top..but i am having a bit of trouble..it is now 3:30 am and i am in tears..i am waiting for my book to come the ez knitting w/out tears..when it comes to theelongated st. how do i knit this? row 2 at the end knit each st..but the st means stockinette..row 3 knit each st.. row 4 knit. if i knit row 2 in stock that would become row 2-3 and row 3 would be row 4 and row 4 would be 5?so i guess my question would be does a stock st. consider to be one row? even though it is knit one row purl one row? i knit this stitch in stock but it just looks odd..can someone please walk me through this elongated stitch..or should i just give this one up and knit a baby blanket for my son..this yarn is like a shoe lace do you have any suggestions??

Hi Terry
I`m assuming that you are knitting the Katia Calipso Summer Top from the free patterns on elann. Here goes for size b:
1. Cast on 46 stitches 2. Knit 2 rows (garter stitch) 3. Knit in pattern as follows:
Row 1 of Patterns: Knit 2, Knit 42, Knit 2 Row 2 of Patterns: (Knit 1 wrapping yarn twice around the needle) 2 times, (Purl wrapping yarn thrice around the needle) 42 times, (Knit 1 wrapping yarn twice around the needle) 2 times (134 stitches)
Row 3 of Patterns: (Knit 1 dropping the extra wrap from the needle) 2 times, (dropping the 2 extra wraps per stitch from the needle, slip the next 3 stitches onto a cable needle in FRONT of the knitting; then dropping the two extra wraps per stitch, knit the next 3 stitches; knit the 3 stitches from the cable needle) 7 times, ( Knit 1 dropping the extra wrap from the needle) 2 times (46 stitches)
Row 4 of Patterns: Knit 2, Purl 42, Knit 2
4. Repeat these 4 rows until knitting is 10 5/8 inches long 5. Decrease for armholes - Knit 2, knit 2 together, continue in pattern until 4 stitches remain, knit 2 together through backs of stitches, knit 2. Repeat on right side rows until 34 stitches remain. 6. Knit until piece is 18 1/2 inches long. 7. Bind off as follows: Knit 2 together, return this stitch to left needle, knit two together, return this stitch to left needle, continue until you have 1 stitch left. Cut yarn and pull end through this stitch.
Knit another piece the same. Sew side seams. Sew top edges together for 1 1/4 inches on each side.
Hope this helps Alice Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada

This top is pretty tough for a new knitter since it has both long stiches and cross overs. To answer your question, In this case st stands for `stitch` not `stockinette`. So the pattern is having you knit each stitch, wrapping the yarn twice (to provide an extra amount of yarn) then knit back across dropping the extra wrap so the extra yarn makes the stich very long. Since one is knitting all four rows, it is really a version of garter stitch. The pattern then explains how to do the pattern stitch. Again, st stands for stitch, thus one knits across in row 1. Row 2 purls by wrapping the yarn 3 times for each stitch. Row 3 one has to move 3 stitches to a cable needle while dropping the extra wraps (careful not to drop the actual stitch) then knit 3 stitches doing the drop thing again, then knit the stitches on the cable needle. Whew!!!! To make matters even more difficult, the knitter has to do both things in the same row since the actual knitting pattern calls for the elongated stitch on the edges of the material and the pattern, or crossed stitches, in the middle. It is an awful lot to keep track of.
There are some nice free patterns on the Berroco site for summer tops with simpler stitches you may want to check out. Not sure if the gauge is the same..... But, IMHO gauge is much easier to change than keeping track of all those wraps and crosses. Look at some of the previous discussions on this chat page for adjusting patterns for bigger yarns (9/3 or so) Good Luck!
