I haven`t crocheted in a while, but I can imagine you can adapt lacy doily patterns to make a circular shawl, etc. Also, I have an old Mon Tricot Workbook (l972) that shows both knitted and openwork crocheted patterns so I know these patterns do exist. This book also shows you how to do hairpin lace (you need a crochet hook and a hairpin lace fork) which is quite beautiful and much faster than regular crochet.
