'No stitch' is used to make the pattern fit the chart. There will usually be a yarn over or decrease somewhere to balance the pattern. If a shawl is expanding from a narrow cast-on there may be several 'no stitch' squares for several (or many) rows until the stitch count fills the chart. Just pass over the square as you knit and do not count it in stitch count. Alice Salt Spring Island
