It is just one of those things that looks very complicated with all the written directions, but in action is fairly simple.
As you pick up your gusset stitches, when you get to the last gusset stitch and the first instep stitch, there maybe a bit of a gap. Just pick up an extra stitch to fill that in. You can decrease it the next round.
And pick up as many gusset stitches as you need, so that there are no gaps. Patterns may say pick up x amount of stitches. This should be viewed as a guide. You should pick up what you need. They will be worked off, or if you have a really large amount of stitches, you can delete two per round. Some people have a really high arch and need the gusset to decrease gradually. You know your feet best ;)
If you pick up a different number of stitches on each side of the gusset, not to worry. You will double decrease on the side with the extra stitches. It doesn`t effect the fit or the look of the sock. Socks are happy things, but shy. They live inside your shoes.
And if anyone is down there checking out your gusset decreases, they had better be worshiping you knitting prowess, while they are at it. "Oh my lady, let me worship your lovely socks and kiss your fabulous toes" ;-}
If you find you have a really large space between the gusset end and the instep beginning, you can try this trick. Take a crochet hook, and bring the yarn between the right edge of one stitch and the left edge of the other. This pulls the two stitches close together. Makes and extra stitch, which we will kill off in a future round.
Glad to help you over to the sock side of the universe. Be warned, it is dangerous over here and very addictive . Just look at me, I fell into the sock hole and have barely had my head up in almost a year
Make em, loud, make em classic but make them fun. And stun your guild friends. :)
And post a picture of your finished socks, we love pictures here
Suzann

Normally you knit your leg until you reach your ankle. Then the sock stitches are divided. I knit on two circulars. But if you are using 3 or 4 dpns then you will divide up the stitches differently.
The heel in most cases is created using half the stitches you have for the leg. So if you have 60 stitches for your leg, you will use half 30 stitches for the heel flap.
The other 30 stitches are reserved for the top of your foot or the instep. You can keep them on the needles or put them on a bit of yarn or a stitch holder. Whichever is easier for you. Right now you only need the heel flap stitches
The heel flap is worked flat, knit on row, purl one row.
Some directions have you work the heel flap in a slip stitch pattern. Slip 1 knit 1...then purl back. This causes a the fabric to be thicker and have a raised pattern that almost looks like ribbing.
Since you are having a bit of trouble, I would skip the slip stitch pattern and do the heel flap in plain ss.
You slip the first stitch on each row. knit across, purl back
Why slip the first stitch? This is so you will have a neat row of chain stitches, when you go pick up the gusset stitches.
(The gusset stitches will be the side of the heel flap)
The heel flap should equal the measurement from your ankle to the floor. If it is too short the heel will pull under your foot. So go by your measurement, which may not be the same as the pattern you are using.
Once you have worked the heel flap you will be ready to turn the heel.
Generic Heel Turn
There are lots of heel types. This is the most common. And the formula is easy, so you can use it on any number of stitches. Work half the stitches plus 1
In the case of our 30 stitch heel flap that would be 15+1 = 16 stitches.
Knit 16, ssk or s1 knit 1 psso, whichever you prefer. Knit 1.
Turn the work, slip 1, Purl 6. Purl 2tog. Purl 1.
Turn the work, slip 1 Knit until you come to the gap between the ssk and the knit 1. You can`t miss it
SSK those two stitches. Knit 1
Slip 1 Purl till you come to the gap between the p2tog and the purl 1.
Purl 2 tog, P 1
Continue until all the stitches are used up.
You have just turned the heel.
That should keep you busy for a bit ;)
After this you will pick up the gusset stitches (the stitches that run down the heel flap) Then work across the insteap stitches, pick up the other side and work across the remaining heel stitches.
Everyother row you will decrease a stitch on each gusset side, until you are back to the original number of stitches you started with.
Socks Yeah :)
Have fun
Suzann

Hello,
My name is Sharon and I am fron Lenoir, NC. I have just started knitting after an absence of 20 years--and then I only knit 2 sweaters. My problem with knitting is that I get "stuck" and have no where to turn for advice--so I am anxious to join this forum. Also, there are no yarn shops within a stone`s thorw, so I have to order yarn from the internet, and look forward to seeking advice regarding my purchases. It is a pleasure to discover this wonderful web site.
Sharon
Lenoir, NC
