I used a mercerized cotton (Schaefer`s Laurel) for my Clapotis, so I`m sure Sonata would be lovely. I don`t know about how Luna would do (and right now the color selection is a bit limited), but it`s a wonderfully silky yarn and would be elegant. I made my Clapotis 2/3 size, since I had only one 400-yard skein. There`s also a pattern somewhere on the `Net that gives directions for a scarf-sized Clapotis.

This morning I decided that I would start one in my Katia Alba - hot pink. I am already up to the 6th round of increases and it looks pretty cool so far. I have noticed that the PFB edge looks different from the KFB edge so I think I will end up making a crochet edge when I am done, if I don`t like the way it finishes. Also, my YO on one side has left a larger hole than on the other side but I think it will work out once I drop stitches.

In looking it over, I think the twisted stitches would also make for a cool rib pattern - a nice wave in the fabric.

Kim

How did you like making the Cozy? The alpaca sounds lovely must feel terrific. The Cozy is near the top of my WIMs list; I found some cotton yarn on 40%-off sale in a blue-jeans-friendly sort of colorway which I thought would just be perfect for it. But my LYS has swatched that in the Mandalay(?) that was used for the model, and I didn`t like the feel of it.

The bamboo does look beautiful. I`m thinking that a large part of the beauty of these is the glow from certain fibers in a simple stitch. I know Jean is planning on dyeing Alpaca and silk also. I made a Cozy from the Elann black alpaca which is a very similar weight and it was the perfect weight. Daryl

I started one from sport weight merino which I bought from MSWF, but ripped it out because I was afraid I wouldn`t have enough and the diagonals wouldn`t fit properly. I had 500 yds, now maybe I shouldn`t have ripped it. I`ve got Knitpicks cream alpaca and silk that I want to dye in a variegated pattern to try the Clapotis, but I`m scared of messing up and can`t quite decide what colors I want. We had a great time playing with crock pot dyeing at the beach, the colors came out beautifully! Just option overloaded. Daryl

The model was made with ArtYarns Supermerino, which I thought would be too warm for SoCal. I used Schaefer`s Elaine mercerized worsted weight cotton in the Emily Dickinson colorway. There are 400 yds/skein, and that made a Clapotis that is about 14in wide and 60in long, plenty big for me. I loved making the pattern and loved the yarn; there`s a picture in the archive. I have another in mind, to be made from a silk/wool blend yarn; this one will also be about 2/3 the pattern size.

Several of the Elann yarns would work nicely. Endless Summer Lara is sportweight, not worsted, but you might swatch with it and see how that looks. Marly would work well, so would the Mayfair. Have fun with this!

Imagine baby silk or ummmm alpaca. Or maybe something slinky.
As I said if you pick anything that has the least bit of fuzz even HW the stitches don`t really run. You have to poke them along.
Someone did it with yo instead of dropped stitches. The yo make a smaller space. But might be handy on a really fuzzy yarn.

Hi Eileen, Loved your first "off the cuff" definition. According to my French-French Larousse dictionary, clapotis est le bruit de la mer que clapote, so your translation is right on! As a French word it certainly seems associated with the sound, but some one may have named the knitting technique as related to waves rippling; the couple of examples that I`ve seen on this site, have that look, at least a bit. Happy knitting, young lady, and keep that sense of humor! Jamie

All right, all right, I`ll be good....

Actually, I was fluent in French at one time, and from what I remember "le clapoti" (with clapotis, being the plural, bien sur) is a very particular word which doesn`t translate very well and means "lapping" or "rippling", as in le clapoti des vagues, "the lapping of the waves.

I could be wrong, but I thought it alluded to the sound more than anything - so I don`t know if it makes much sense in this context.
