In our neck of the woods, my friend and I decided after many tries to find the repeat pattern in some of the sock yarns, that not all of our socks are "identical" twins, some are "fraternal" twins.

Thanks everyone for your help. I did some ebay hunting and my needles should be on the way. Alice I had wondered about the patterned yarns. I could imagine having strips that don`t match. Or just a bit out of step with each other.
In the mean time I have finished one sock with dps.

Hi Suzann
Look at the sock pattern - it suggests 2,25mm or 2.5mm
which will give you a much firmer fabric.

2.25mm = American #1 or Canadian/British #13
2.50mm = American #2 or Canadian/British #12

The #3 American on the yarn band is way too big for socks, that`s 3.25mm. American sizes have a big jump between #2 and #3, Canadian/British sizes have a size #11 in between, but even that is still too large for socks, unless you are a very tight knitter. Size #1 is normal!

Remember, if you are using computer-dyed patterned yarn, and want both socks to look the same, pull out yarn, match the pattern, and cut off the extra bit(s) at the beginning before you start knitting. Some yarns will match within a few yards, others take rather longer. This is easy to do on a carpet or table, but I always seem to be doing it in my car.

Alice
Salt Spring Island

Hush Hush-- I didn`t know anyone was on to me. At least needles take up a fixed amount of space and you don`t need to worry about moths.

I started collecting needles at age 12 -- more than 30 years ago -- and I don`t lend them out.

Carol

Look for gently used needles on Ebay to start your collection of more than 1 needle in every size. Many of us have needle collections that rivel our yarn stashes lol. In some parts of the country estate sales, garage sales, and thrift stores are other good sources of extra needles.

As a rule of thumb for socks, drop down a needle size from the label size-- or if you usually need to drop down one size, drop down two. I generally find the needle size to use based on the texture of the swatch and then figure out the socks based on the gauge.

Carol

Hi All you Sock Queens

I got some Kroys to check out Alice`s pattern. The yarn calls for a size 3 needle. It seemed very very open when I did my gauge swatch. I am down to a size 1. Is this normal? And what about the Esprit yarn that calls for a size 7 needle? Does it knit up really thick with that large a needle?
I want to do them on two circs but I can`t buy double of every size from 0-3 I guess what I am asking is what size needle do all of you use with sock yarn.
Thanks for the imput
Suzann
