Alice, I will double check my thrift shops to see what I see, and as a matter of fact, a friend of mine`s wife is a pro-scout at thrift shops. She found a bunch of Escada stuff in the dollar bin, and made a killing on e-bay, so I think she`s my girl!

Try the big thrift shops. When I did costuming for a community theatre in Ontario, Sally Ann and Goodwill were wonderful sources for `period pieces` - ask about Halloween costumes if you don`t see anything on the racks. There may be things tucked away.
Also, if you have an active community theatre, it may rent costumes - probably about $5.00 for an outfit for a week/month/as long as you need it. I used to rent anything from tuxedos, bridal gowns, 60`s uglies, peasant outfits, to knitted chain mail - tidy little extra income for the theatre.

Oh Cate-

I looked on e-bay, but they weren`t UGLY enough, or they were a la "Sid Vicious". I`m at my MIL`s, and we`ve decided my BIL needs a pair of lovely plaid pants like he had in the 70s. The really DREADFUL ones. It`s going to be a junk shop quest!
