Message from MacChick

I`ve been aiming at the teenager size for Christmas gifts and using one ball for the yoke-shoulders area and about a size 6 needle for that, to make it dense and warm. The rest of the body takes about 4 balls, and I use size 8, 10, and 11 needles (changing up about every 4 inches).

I`m guessing this would be about the same for a small adult size. I`ve been making them so they come right down to the wrist, but any length shorter is actually great, too... I love wearing my daughter`s ponchos, which are only elbow-length on me... they never get in the way, you actually forget you have one on, great indoor garments... so you really can`t possibly make one the "wrong" size.

No, it`s not too bulky, I`m on my second lace poncho out of the Naturgarn right now... after you stretch it out good and hit it with a steam iron, the lace shows up beautifully. And this weight of yarn really knits up fast.

I love this pattern. THANKS. I saw the lace ponchos you made of Highland wool. You don`t think the Gjestal would be too bulky for lace? I`m awfully tempted to give this a try. Why oh why can`t I just hit the lottery so I can play with yarn all day instead of working!!

Message from Gaile

Hello again!

MacChick, I`m in Vancouver BC. I actually set my alarm and got up at 6am to make sure I got colours I wanted. It was the bright pink I was thinking of when I said seashell (hour of the morning and no coffee in me made thinking difficult). I think I ended up with all the colours I wanted, including several of the blues, the bright pink, the violet and aubergine. I love making felted bags from this yarn, and the YS I work in doesn`t carry all the different colours.

Ponchos are great fun to make, this past year I made them for both my daughters.

Laura - you aren`t being rude, never fear! Gjestal makes a gorgeous felted bag that is quite heavy duty. I`ve done several different bags and am currently knitting a kitty bed (in the round).

Hello, I am sorry to but in. I don`t participate in "chat" centers so I don`t know if I`m being rude by jumping in but this poncho idea is GREAT! I do have a question. I`m new to felting.. which would be better for making felted bags for two girls that are 7 and 9. Using the Highland wool to felt or the Gjstal (don`t think I spelled that correctly he he)I would think I need something that will get a thick sturdy result right?

Gaile, seashell pink was never a choice in this yarn, but one possible reason for colors to disappear before 6:00AM might be the time zone differences, if you are not in Pacific Time...

Daryl... a poncho is a very "cool" option for a middle school student these days, lace ones go fast and are pretty yarn-efficient, and out of this yarn, even lace ponchos are warm... and oh, do the school kids oooh and aahh over the lace ponchos, because they are nearly impossible to find in stores!

My daughter goes to a K-8 campus, and I substitute there most days, and the 7th and 8th graders ask me every day where I keep getting all those lace ponchos for her... how they wish I would say I got them at Wal-Mart! And it certainly qualifies as a garment she will not outgrow!

I`ve been doing them by casting on about 50-60 sts onto a circular needle, dividing it into 4 equal sections with stitch markers (to designate the increase points), knitting back and forth in stockinette with increases (one on each side of each stitch marker and one at the beginning and end of the row) every other row until the thing is about 5" long (this makes a neck opening that can be laced up with I-cord or ribbon). Then I join the knitting to make a circle (put a 4th stitch marker in here to designate center-front) and knit around in plain stockinette for another few inches. At that point, the shoulders are made, so I drop the two side stitch markers, and from then on, the increases are only at the center-front and center back. Now you pick out a lace stitch... any one you want... ones with stitch repeats of about 6 or 8 (or less) work better than ones with stitch repeats of 12 or more. The increases on every other row at the front and back will form the classic poncho points. (A good trick: Separate your increases from your lace stitch pattern by stitch markers, and every time they build up to enough for another repeat of the lace stitch, incorporate them into the pattern.) Every 4 or 5 inches, you may want to move up to a bigger size needle to give it even more flare, but it works out fine even if you don`t. You just keep knitting around and around until you are out of yarn.

It will be a lot longer than it looks on the needles after blocking. Really stretch it out ALOT when you block it (so the lace pattern will show up well)... lately I`ve just been using a steam iron, and it`s working fine, goes fast.

Girls around here go ga-ga over these things, and they knit up very fast. A lot of bang for the buck as they say.

I`m planning on the fiber trends Maggie`s Tote that was in the patterns recently. So I got some blues, reds and yellow.

You`re lucky your daughter will wear colors and cables. My son only wants plain sweaters. If it has a cable it`s "too fancy." And for colors I can choose between black, charcoal grey and navy blue.

Laura

It`s the Kiwi. Somebody must be making something massive or an entire family of matching sweaters? What are you making? I got the bright pink too. One of my daughters has classic pink and white complexion and I`m hoping that she looks so good in bright pink that she`ll still wear it despite the maturity and coolness of middle school. Now the question is, do I make a fast simple sweater that will suit her still babygirl shape and she will grow into, or do I make the wonderful complicated cable pattern in the book, which might be too bulky on a roundish person? Such decisions.

Talking to myself... (and I think it was bright pink not seashell). Anyway - I guess I was too quick for myself. I refreshed my browser after the yarn first showed up and saw all the colours. And got what I wanted (but probably didn`t really need, but you never know...) I love Elann as much as I love the YS I work in!
