I`m interested in buying a monthly/semi-monthly publication on knitting for new to intermediate skill. Do you have a suggestion?

Hi TamaraToo,
That`s my level and I find that although I buy Vogue Knitting, it`s mostly just to salivate over the creations. Family Circle Knitting and Knit n Style are the mags that I actually use.

I`m a fairly new knitter as well, but I can`t do without Interweave Press` Knit magazine. It has very informative articles and patterns to inspire and challenge. Heres the link to their website if you want to get an idea. http://www.interweave.com/knit/default.asp Good Luck! Heather

I like Knitters-they will take a certain top each issue and turn it inside out-like fastenings, lace or cables. It`s different every time!
Bets (I`m lying tho, I BUY them all!)

You know, I`ve been wondering about that Interweave Press mag... good to hear some thing about it from somebody here... I love all their books so much... and their ad ("Do you knit in your dreams?") just really speaks to me (not that has a THING to do with the mag!)... and I`ve been thinking about giving that one a try one of these days...

Hi TamaraToo
The magazines that I always buy are Knitters (my favourite), Family Circle, and Interweave. I used to buy Cast-On just for the articles as I find the patterns and colours used "interesting". As for Vogue, I will have a quick look through before I make a decision.
Happy Knitting Cheryl
PS - I believe most of the magazine are published quarterly

I like Knitters and Interweave. I think there is more valuable information in them and I like the look of the patterns more. I do subscribe to Rowan because I think the patterns are very classic and I generally like simple, clean lines. I like the interest to be in the stitch, lace, cable, etc. I like to look at Vogue Knits to poke fun if nothing else but I do think they are doing a better job lately with teaching specific skills in detail. And like Bets, I`ll confess right now and tell you I usually buy or at least look at them all. ;-} Benne

I`ll put in another vote for Interweave Knits. A lot of their stuff may be a little challenging, but still very clear to follow in the pattern and generally not "fussy". That`s my only beef with Knitter`s: they`ve got a penchant for detail work that may be easy/repetative, but still pretty time consuming, at least at my level of speed - for example, tiny all-over cables.
Except perhaps for I.K., I think I`ll peruse the yarn shops for latest issues, instead of re-subscribing the mags right now coming to my mailbox. One, they often turn up in the stores before they get to my mailbox anyway, and two, I`m finding that maybe one or two issues a year I would probably not buy off of a store magazine rack, if browsing - which makes any minor discount for a subscription less than cost effective. Of course, that part is very much a personal taste thing. I figure since I can`t actually knit a few dozen sweaters a *month*, better to save my $ for can`t-live-without issues. (You`d think that rationale would keep me from overstocking yarn too, but nooooooo...)

I like Interweave Knits too, but it`s really a matter of personal taste. A mag that hasn`t been mentioned yet is Rebecca, but i`m not sure if you can get that directly as a subscription in North America (anyone know?) -- that one`s fairly young and trendy. I like Rowan designs too, which are fairly classic with a slight nod toward trends. But if you don`t like to substitute yarns, just keep in mind that Rowan yarns tend to be pretty expensive. Also, there`s Phildar (Tendances, Automne... not sure what their summer and winter editions are called), which I only found out about recently -- their designs are stylish, but not as young as Rebecca`s... somewhere between Rebecca and Interweave. With all these options, what I do is browse in my LYS (Rebecca, Rowan) or bookstore (Interweave) or online (most show a subset of their current designs so you can get an idea), and buy only what I`d like to knit. So I`d recommend you leaf through the latest mags and see what catches your eye most before deciding. :-)
Hope that helps!
Bea

TamaraToo, I realize that it isn`t a subscription. But one thing I should have mentioned before is Knitty.com. It`s a great online knitting magazine. It is `published` quarterly. The spring issue is out now and has some great articles and patterns. Honeymoon is defintely on my ToDo list. With Grace and possible Frill needing to be added as well. Check them out. Here is the link: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring04/index.html Heather

Knitters is my overall favorite. I also look at Interweave and Vogue. I don`t subscribe so I have an excuse to go to the LSY, like I need an excuse. I also really like the on-line mag Knitty.com.

I just subscribed to Interweave recently. I don`t know if the other magazines have this, but if you`re a subscriber, there`s this online area you can go into that has a lot of really great patterns and how-to sections. There was one pattern in particular that I fell in love with, but it was only available online for subscribers. That was 98% of the reason I subscribed.
