This is not exactly the same thing. But because I knit so many K. Fassett patterns with soo many colors, when I have leftover yarn that is at least a yard long,I wind them into bobbins and put them in a large clear plastic barrel jar that pretzels once came in. Then whenever I start a new multicolored project I go to my jar and pick out all the bobbins that match. I have one jar for wools and one for cottons. They make colorful displays in my knitting room. But I never thought of helping the birds with shorter lengths of yarn. I live on a wooded lot, so I will have to try this out and see what happens.

Oh boy, would my daughter love to see llama hair on the side of a tree or bush! She makes up stories about being a "woolgatherer in the olden days," and when we go on walks, she wants to "gather" whatever is stuck in the sagebrush and creosote bushes... only it`s usually bits of trash and plastic bags, not wool, poor thing! She would LOVE walking around your place and seeing really-truly tufts of wool and animal hair caught on bushes and tree bark! It would be like seeing all the old tales come true!

I`d love to be able to see the nests after they are built. Our llama has rubbed against some of our trees and his fur is hanging on the end of the branches. So the birds have probably grabbed some of it for their homes. I hadn`t even thought of it. Last year my son found an abondon nest at the beginning of snow fall, It had one solitary tiny blue egg. I now have it in a glass case on my shelves. Maybe we`ll find another one this year, but brightly colored.
Heather

Marion,

"Ort" means leftover or scrap. Don`t worry, it`s not a normal word anymore. I learned it from working crossword puzzles. I put orts from brushing Max and Belle in a net onion bag and hang it out on a tree and the birds get the dog hair. Don`t do this if you spray your dogs with flea and tick spray. I like the idea of a yarn nest better. Get everybody into the yarn act!
lol Boy, lopi would be great for the birds, water resistance, I could really get into this!
Benne

Has anyone else every heard of this or do you keep one?

I have no idea what "Ort" means, but this is what an Ort jar is...one puts all of ones little bits of fibers-yarn, needlepoint thread etc (natural fibers) in it during the year, and early in the spring you festoon your trees in little tufts with this...all within your reach.

Birds will come and collect these offerings and you will have the most colorful, cozy and well built nests in your area. Any little bits that aren`t collected by birds are easily picked up.
