I lived in Ulm from `94-`97. DH was working for Daimler Benz Research. There was a great, tiny, yarn shop just inside the Fussganger Zone downtown. The owner stocked very high end, lovely, stuff and would whip you out a custom pattern while you stood there. Renanta was her name, and perhaps the name of the shop. If you haven`t checked out Ulm yet, its worth a day trip. Worlds tallest stone spire cathedral. It`s really nice to sit in the Troeglen coffee shop overlooking the square and church on market days (Wed and Sat).

Hi Betsy!
You must have missed my first posting. Hubby is from South Texas (Laredo/San Antonio)! lol. Where are you?

We`re about 45 min. west of Nurnburg. I`m sure you visited Rothenburg. We`re about twenty minutes east of that great little town.

Didn`t know about the Opal factory. I`ll have to check that out! I have tons of German knitting mags and books. Love them for inspiration. I didn`t know there was a Kaiser factory up near Bayreuth too. We always used the one near Bamburg because it was closer for us. Need to make a trip there too. lol.

I have a German friend here that I met through Spin Off magazine when we were here last tour. I`ll ask her about the Opal factory. Went to a Spin In at her house last weekend. Much fun. About 30 German ladies and one gentleman joined us. Luckily many of them spoke English because my German is horrible even though I`ve lived more here than the States over the past 15 years. That`s sad.

Peace,
Jean
Ansbach, Germany

Hi-

Jean, I am trying to think of where you are, and you are 45 min east of Frankfurt, right? The Opal Sock yarn folks have a factory outlet south of you....I have never been there, but I remember reading something....(heck, I remember they used to MAIL me stuff in those little mail order envelopes) and that may be worth looking at. Karstadt in Frankfurt ought to be good, and if you can go to the magazine handler, you can pick up German copies of Rebecca and (don`t remember the title) Lana Grossa magazines, and they always list stockists in their magazines.

You aren`t REALLY far from Bayreuth, are you? I MISS the Kaiser factory! Just box THAT up for me!

You holler if you need something...since you`ve been before, there`s probably not much, but if anyone misses hot peppers from South Texas, I`m your connection!

Betsy

lol. All the big yarn stores I used to go to up in Wurzburg when we were stationed here from 95-2000 are gone now. The only thing I`ve found is Rodel Wolle stores. Small chain but they carry Regia and it`s still fun to go look and feel. Email me if there`s something you miss from Germany.. danandjeanflores@aol.com

Peace,
Jean

Are you kidding, I still have stuff I bought from Karstadt from my first tour there, and my second, and NOW the stuff from elann. I envy you because you have good sweater weather! I got MAD one Saturday after I`d come back because I couldn`t go to my favorite yarn buying place!

Bets

lol. Elann is a very scary place for yarn addicts. I`m just glad I read I saw the small note about this forum in my last newsletter from them. Problem is... I think it`s going to make my addiction worse! I already have "kits" that I`ve made up from all the splurging I did on Elann last year before we moved back to Germany. I love the new Peruvian collection. Awesome stuff.

Peace,
Jean
Ansbach, Germany

oh my goodness...
I was checking on an order that I placed for some of the peruvian alpaca.. so I decided to view my shopping history page. boy oh boy I was in for a surprise when I saw all those orders I have placed and had to keep scrolling down, down, down to see them all, I have to admit it right here and now..I am an yarn addict, there I said it. It`s a little scary to see all that right out in front of you. But I`m not ready to get help yet so I`ll probably just keep on shoppin` (lol)
happy knitting
judy
