I have been successful with ebay, HOWEVER, please check the retail price and factor in the shipping. Sometimes it really does not pay. Also, if you overbuy, no returns for credit as you can get in your local knitting store. I would imagine that it is a good way for people to buy who don`t live near a fabulous store.

Definitely know your item before you bid. It`s easy to get caught up in e-bay and pay more there than you would by buying locally. Remember to add in the shipping/handling charges on top of the auction price.

Hi Michelle-

The other folks have come up with a few EXCELLENT points-do try to familiarize yourself with the yarns you are looking at. Do a search elsewhere, and check a few places for price/color- a lot of times a color or a whole line will be discontinued.
Also, at this point, TRY to buy name brands, with the labels on. As you get more familiar with manufacturers, and what they offer, you can get more goodies. I`ve bought Colinette mill-ends off e-bay, and Cherry Tree Hill, as well as Crystal Palace. Most sellers are perfectly fine, but there are a few that I`d rather not buy from.
I likeBonnie`sCozyKnits, Toadal, and WildWestWools, and those just a few. I`ve never had anything but a straight-up deal from any of them.

Another thing to remember is - there`s a lot of it out there...I just went nuts looking for a few skeins of a Jaeger yarn, bought some in "the most tolerable color available" and then spent less 3 weeks later in a better color.

Happy bidding-
Bets

Hi Michelle,
I have found some good buys on Colinette on ebay and the sellers I bought from were fantastic. I familiarize myself with the yarns so I know what the yarn will be like before I bid. I bought some yarn from the aforementioned seller mentioned on this page on ebay and the yarn was fine but VERY thin and prone to breakage without extreme care. I buy Colinette there and from my LYS but I sure do wish my pals at Elann had it. I mostly buy from Elann but do buy from ebay and Herrschners sales because of price and because my LYS is 75 miles away. That`s the only thing about living in such a rural area that I`m not thrilled with. Good luck with your class, I`m jealous- you must share some of your new skills and projects with us.
Benne

Thanks so much. I agree that I would not feel comfortable asking for assistance if I had not purchased the items there. I actually just signed up for a 6 week lesson beginning in January for intermediate knitters. I`m really looking forward to it. Michelle

Hi Michelle,
You can do a search in the discussion group and find the old postings. Just do a search for "ebay". The discussion took place in June and July. There are many good sellers on Ebay. The seller discussed in the recent posting has low prices, but sells what many of us consider to be less than top quality yarn. Much of it does not have manufacture labels so fiber content and care can not be certain. However, as discussed recently, creative people can find uses for everything. It is great to find bargins on the web, but I try to also support my LYS (local yarn store) as well. The prices are higher, but they are always ready to help when I have a problem. Think of it as the price of the yarn includes the knitting lesson! I personally NEVER ask questions about a project I`m working on if I didn`t buy the yarn at the store. That is where this friendly group can come in handy.
Happy knitting.

I`ve bought yarn perhaps 20-25 times on eBay. Only once was there a problem with the yarn, and that problem was something the seller could not have known. I`ve always been very pleased. Much of the yarn sold there is from individual stashes so it`s a great resource for discontinued yarns.

As always on eBay, check the feedback of the seller, be sure you know how much shipping will be, and ask any questions you have before bidding.
