Oh yes-

I`d met my mother`s family again for the first time in 35+ years...and we were getting ready to leave my aunt`s house when I asked my cousin if she did patchwork, as many Japanese do BEAUTIFUL work. That led to a hastily planned trip to Yuzawaya, a few subway stops away from my Tokyo hotel. This place is seven stories, two of which are devoted to knitting. My little brother had warned me that Japanese products were not necessarily cheaper in Japan because of various taxes and tariffs, and he was right, but man, what selection! If you EVER are in Tokyo go THERE!
B

Hi
Christina`s got a point. You gotta go!

Is anyone else a nerd like me? I check the phone book when I`m in the US, and I`ll buy foreign language knitting books and LOOK at the stockist lists to figure out where the shops are when I`m out.

B

While on vacation last year in Venice tucked away from the maddening crowd I found a neat little yarn store but it was closed.I tend to wander mindlessly so I had no idea where I was or how I`d gotten there, so I sat down to wait until they reopened. My DH had other plans, so off we went in search of some guy thing. He assured me that he knew exactly where we were and he would be able to find his way back, NOT! We never did find the store again but HE found a beautiful leather coat and spent less than I probably would have had I found my gem again.

Oh, now I`m sulking because I`m not in Germany. All yarn stores in Germany are gems...sob!

But another gem, if you can catch them at a show is Interlacements..they sell a square value on yarn. Good fibers, fun colors, nice people from another place I`m NOT...Colorado Springs. Sob Sob!

Actually, this site is my gem. Thanks guys!
B

I found a gem in Las Vegas NV. I visit a very good friend there every year to go hiking and exploring in the nearby deserts. She`s a professor at UNLV. It is such a tourist town, and the locals always appear to me as retired folks who spend their time playing slots in the grocery store, or are rock/desert people like my friend (they spend their time indoors planning their next outdoor adventure). Seems like every year I`d check the phone book and the listed store would be already out of business. But for the last 3 years, Gail Knits has been tucked away in an unassuming strip mall in the sprawl that constitues the city. She has great yarns, lots of free patterns with purchace and a great eye for colors. The place was packed when I was last there. It was nice to see.

I spent the Thanksgiving weekend in Buffalo, NY, visiting my Brother and his family. I personally happen to like Buffalo, but this sentiment is not unanimous in my family , particularly with the man who does most of the driving. It is an old steel town that has been trying to re-invent itself for years and just keeps loosing businesses and people - not the sort of place you would automatically expect to find on the cutting edge of anything. When I saw the new Yarn store on the corner of Where-my-brother-used-to-live and Main Street, I was not sure what to expect, but I was dying to find out. Well, all sorts of sophisticated, up-to-date yarns, a few old patterns made up to look absolutely luxe in terrific yarns, and some nice people. Which just goes to show, you never know where a gem will turn up. Has anyone else found a fiber gem somewhere/sometime they least expected it?
