If you have to start a new ball of yarn in the middle, it`s really not a problem. Just drop the old and begin the new. When you are ready to weave in the ends, if you weave the strand you dropped first to the left and the new one you started to the right, you will not have a hole in your project. You should leave enough of the yarn to weave it in at least 2 inches. By weaving, I mean basically doing a duplicate stitch on the wrong side of the work. I never tie a knot in my yarn because, without fail, it shows through on the right side. Hope this helps.

the end of course should be only at the sides and then sewn up or down the side edges. But of course there are times that they come in the middle of the work and if you dont want to undo the yarn then I suggest:
Lay about 14cm of the old ball and 14 cm of the new ball overlaping and then work the two together. (makes the work thicker and can show on the right side of the work)OR Split the last and first 14cm of each ball of wool so that it is half thickness. Lay half of each (old and new ball of wool) over top of each other and work as number 2. (this is the one that I use it is strong and yet not thick. The loose ends can be cut off without any fear of loosing strength in your work.OR the best way of all is to start at the end of a row and tie the two ends together. The piece that is hanging can be used up for the sewing of the garment.
Hope that this help, Lynadell Knitwear Designer
