I have no problem just thinking of socks as socks - knit `em all the time, but it really is a shame those airmen didn`t take it up - think what a nice alternative to pumping iron in the yard it would have been to the guy in the joint. He could have used pencils, if they wouldn`t let him have wooden needles...
Theresa, who spends more time than most thinking about prisons cause DH works in Corrections.

I am teaching 4 ladies on Sunday afternoon. It started with 2 of my best friends who happen to be from Vietnam. They wanted to learn to knit. So when I got there 1 friend who speaks very good english and their DSIL who just came here speaks very little english. They all had lions brand homespun and number 10 boyles metal needles. It was a little challenge to teach it with that because the yarn is a little difficult to work with but we were successful. The pregnant lady brought a very fine baby yarn boucle with size 4 anfd 6 needles. Mind you this young woman has never knit a day in her life. WELL..........I taught her to cast on those 91 stitches on the 4s and then proceeded to teach her to do 1by1 ribbing for 2.5 inches. Needless to say I had to do the first .5 inch so she could at least see what she was doing. It was a hoot trying to show her what was a K and what was a P with that boucle in the way. Well she learned to make one, add color , decrease and make a seam and she did finish in 3 weeks. Each time she went home with the knitting I told her DONT make any mistakes because I don`t think i can figure it out and we will have to rip it out. And,,,,,,,,,,,,, she never made any mistakes ,,,,,,,at least not any that showed!!!!!!!!! I want to teach some of the girls at my church school to knit. The have each make afghans squares and then put them together for the elderly or people who are sick and in need of comfort. I want to call the group Sacred Threads and make up labels. I have all boys so no one here is remotely interested in learning / Pam

Who have I taught that wasn`t enthralled? Everyone. I remember about 3 years ago, standing in a group of airmen in Germany-they were SOOOO puzzled because I was making socks (think of them as little foot sweaters!) and I asked them what they did in their spare time-video games. I explained that it was the same amount of time, I just had a sock to show for it. I wish they`d listened, one of them is in jail for murder now.

I`ve taught both daughters, and only the younger is even remotely inclined. Both of them won prizes at fairs in Alaska, but my oldest still seems to think it`s for the poor. (Oh, if she knew what yarn cost!) They will pitch in if I have the Bond out, tho. "Mother is always right" they just don`t know it yet. I can`t wait-I hope the eldest goes away to a college where it`s the cool thing to do! She may see the light yet.

I taught my neice. She seems quite taken with it. The only trouble is, she lives quite far away and I don`t see her often. She has had trouble finding someone local to help her with cast on and offs. Her mom (my sis) is learning a bit just to help out. Christina

Well, being the mother of 2 sons who are now almost 30 (oh my, I didn`t think I was old enough)I remember my youngest son asking me to teach him. I think that he was around 15 at the time, and it blew my socks off.He is left handed and our lessons never got very far. I think that I will ask him if he would like to try again. I`ve offered to teach anyone who found the need to stare at me while knitting, but I`ve always been told "I don`t have the time".

Now that we`ve all fessed up and told where we learned to knit, who have we taught? I`ve taught Tim, and believe it or not, he knows what to do, even if he can`t do it unassisted. My efforts to teach other people have generally been met with disinterest: no one seems to want to learn. I`m making an effort with 2 girls in one of my English classes, but I can give them maybe 5 minutes of time, no more. How about the rest of you? You all strike me as people who would be quite happy to pass the craft along: have you gotten any takers?
