Thanks both of you. I think I`m going to try winding on toilet paper tubes, then placing them on one of those spindle things meant to hold a paper towel roll. I`ll use the shoebox idea to re-wind the balls I already made.

I don`t really knit with ribbon, so I`m not sure if this works, but I remember reading this in the Reader`s Digest Knitting Guide book. You put a pencil or a knitting needle, or any other spindle type thing through the centre of the ball. Then you get an old shoebox, cut a hole in each side (opposite to each other) then place the spindle in the holes so the ball is sideways and spins freely. Sure it`s something to try anyway.

Good Luck!

Eileen.

I`ve tried a couple projects with ribbon. For each they were sold as hanks, Noro and Colinette. I didn`t like the way the yarns swatched when very twisted, the Noro especially so. Lost the beauty of the folds of ribbon. Sorry to say, I`ve haven`t come up with any non-tedious ways to combat twisting. I`ve done a 3 step process when starting from hanks. Wind once untwisting as much a possible, re-wind, careful to untwist further, then used your bag trick while knitting. The Colinette scarf turned out quite nice if I say so myself. I haven`t finished the Noro tank. I`ve been thinking about trying spools. Wind on a spool, then somehow support the spool so it spins freely as you knit and the yarn comes off. Good luck.

I`m ready to start a project using ribbon yarn (Compose), and in working up a swatch I notice that there is a problem with the stuff getting twisted. Does the twisting matter? How can I keep it from doing that? Is there some way of winding it that prevents it or at least makes it better? I`ve been putting the ball in a plastic bag, pulling a length out, clipping with a clothespin, and holding it high to untwist, but this is tedious! Is there a better way?
