pattern help In general terms, you need to reduce fabric in the shoulder area. One good way is to plot the shoulder/neck area of a sweater that fits well (A) - use knitter`s graph paper (available on-line). Then plot the same area of the pattern as written on another sheet of graph paper (B). Put B on top of A against a window or light table and trace the shoulder/neck area from A onto B. You may have to tweak a stitch here or there, but you`ll have the shoulder you want on the pattern.

Emoticons are driving me crazy! Benne, more to you twinkling faces. There is a virus going around that is adding those faces. It`s also sending spam messages through legitimate address books. It`s very methodical rather than random. I received a message yesterday with lots of smiley/twinkling things supposedly from my DSinL. Just not his type of message, so I phoned him. It was going through the As in his contacts, Alice, Andrew, Ariadne whom he had heard from. We both ran complete safety/anti-everything checks. You should probably do the same, just in case. Andrew, above, is in Texas so it`s all over.
Everyone, run complete scan if even one smiley face pops up. Better to be safe etc. Took about 3 hours for mine to run, but perfect excuse for knitting.

Help with choosing the right yarn I would suggest looking at the fingering weight yarn. All of the sock yarns (including the Regia under baby weight) will give you a very dependable, machine wash/dry yarn. The Elann undyed merino sock yarn is good to knit with as it comes and great fun to dye. In natural dyes: stinging nettles will give you a light green, cochineal pinks through burgundy and crimson, tumeric a hearty yellow (don`t use too much or you`ll have a strident yellow). The little pots of dye Elann sells are excellent - good clear colours and mixable.
The Baby Ull knits at 32st = 4" which is a very small gauge, and painstaking, 28 - 30 st will give you some drape and not drive you crazy!

Give for Haiti Do what you can, the suffering will go on for a very long time in such a poor country. Our Governor-General (the Queen`s representative) was originally from Haiti, many Haitians work in Quebec, the French language connection is strong with the only other French speakers in the Americas, so there`ll be much support from Canada, but we can`t do it alone. Maybe we should all start knitting blankets? or children`s clothes? for the long haul. Right away they`ll need money for food, water, and medical supplies.

Alice, I need your suggestions (OT) Here`s the Canadian Curling Association site http://www.curling.ca/
lots of links at http://www.curling.com/
http://www.worldcurling.org/

History of curling http://www.curling.ca/content/GoCurling/historyOfCurling.asp
http://www.icing.org/game/history/historya.htm

These will probably give you more than enough info, Bets. Do ask any questions.
Heavy knitted cardigans often in club colours were the `official` wear in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s but only seen occasionally today, usually only on older curlers. Fleece vests are popular today in club curling.

What`s on your needles? Well done, Jamie. I finished Christian`s blanket just after New Year`s, 60"x72", which was quite a feat as the white box of HW yarn arrived the first week in December. Four cable patterns in the middle section and then borders and borders until it grew big enough. Working on the coordinating cushion covers since. Also an Estonian shawl in crimson. Plus, I`m swatching for the projects for the June retreat. I want to get two different vest patterns planned out so that I can take them to Mexico with me and knit up a storm sitting out on the patio.

My News! Wonderful! Now you can have a normal life. Your family in Ireland must be so pleased, too - now they can show off their and your homeland to your daughters.

Esprit Chemo Turban I chose a needle size which produced a good-looking fabric - not too loose and not too tight - and just went with it. Knitted according to the pattern and everything turned out fine. Sorry, I don`t remember the width and didn`t note it on the pattern.

Madrona and then Mexico I`m off to the Madrona Fiber Festival this morning and then on to Mexico. If any of you have questions or want info about the retreats, DH will be monitoring my e-mail daily and anything he doesn`t know how to answer, he`ll forward to DD. The Haapsalu Shawl: A Knitted Lace Tradition Libby, I bought the book and am very pleased with it. It gives general directions for the traditional shawl and then a wide choice of charted patterns for the centre section arranged in categories - leaves, lily-of-the-valley, etc. The last section is lace edgings. It's not a book for a knitter who needs a pattern written out from beginning to end, step by step, it's much more exciting than that as you get to create your own design within the template. You would not have any difficulty using it. Alice

SSI Hi Libby
E-mail me at truemana@telus.net and I'll send you an e-flyer. I still have room in the first retreat - a couple of single rooms and the loft for two or more up to four - I pushed it to five last year. They all knew each other and I think indukged in pillow fights after I went home at night!
Try to do a swap with the kidlets with someone who wants to go somewhere at another time.
It's great fun.

Question re: Liquid Silver Shawl 'No stitch' is used to make the pattern fit the chart. There will usually be a yarn over or decrease somewhere to balance the pattern. If a shawl is expanding from a narrow cast-on there may be several 'no stitch' squares for several (or many) rows until the stitch count fills the chart. Just pass over the square as you knit and do not count it in stitch count.

Shirley Paden book I agree, Benne. Sherri at Watermark Books ordered it for me so I've had it since the moment it was released by the publishers. It's not the sort of book to sit and read from cover to cover - just too much to absorb - but the type to consult frequently for what you need to know at that moment. Love the sleeves on the cover! I think you need this book, Benne - how's that for enabling?

Suggested yarn for bikini Have a look at Elann Esprit. The elastric content will help the bikini to hold its shape. Avoid anything that might stretch at inopportune times.

Best yarn for a FAST blanket We knitted Benne's blanket out of Elann Highland Wool. I think the squares were 12 inches and each and each took just under a ball. This is easy to knit, shows stitch definition well, and is a pleasure to knit. Many, many colours.

I knitted 2 blankets for Christmas 2008 out of 10 stitches = 4 " quality Italian yarn. It was soft and cuddly and the blankets were well-received but it was very heavy on the hands to knit. Couldn't knit for as long at a time, so actually took longer to complete than if I had used HW.
