Knitting Retreats on Salt Spring Island Hi All!
We`ve survived Labour Day Weekend so time to think about knitting in 2010 before you get too busy with Christmas activities.
My 2010 Retreats on Salt Spring Island will explore the half-linen stitch - very versatile and great fun to knit as the appearance can be varied from monochrome damask to multi-coloured tweed. Project will be a vest, knit to fit you, or some other person you measure in advance (I`ll send you instructions). If you are really not into vests, there`ll be alternatives (how about stunning designer cushions). Price is all-inclusive from the moment you step onto Salt Spring. I will provide kits of Elann yarns, at cost, in a choice of colourways - pre-ordered so here when you arrive.
Dates are:
Retreat 1: Thursday, June 10th - Thursday, June 17th
Retreat 2: Sunday, June 20th - Sunday, June 27th
Retreat 2 is already fully booked.
This year`s yarn dyeing retreat was such fun that I will repeat it for any group of 8 - knitting guilds? mothers needing an escape? groups of old friends?
Contact me at truemana@telus.net for more info.

Checking in or the ongoing flapperdoodle failure saga Just concentrate on coming back to Salt Spring in June! Take care and knit up a storm. Maybe you could knit feathers?

9-9 CE webletter Interesting pattern - could be really elegant in the right yarn. Maybe a silk mix?

Les, Baby Surprise tips? Sandra, don`t even try to figure out how it goes together until you have finished the knitting. Then sit down at a table, with a glass of wine, and fold until it looks like a little person could wear it. For a cold climate baby, you may want to extend the sleeves - pick up stitches around the cuff and just knit longer in garter stitch - plain colour or stripes.

Les, Baby Surprise tips? A 3-6 month size usually has a sleeve length of about 5 inches. So if you leave the sleeve as-is, it`ll be about 3/4 length which may be just fine.

Winter is here:-( Just beautiful here on the West Coast with 15 to 20C. On Wednesday I lawn bowled in a short sleeved t-shirt and was warm. It`s due to get colder and rain on Monday. Trees have their leaves except for the ones they dropped in the heat in the summer.
Good knitting weather. Working on a long narrow scarf for teaching on Monday week. I offered the Monday knitting group a choice of simple lace stitch patterns from the Estonian lace book for the project and they all chose the Ligonberry as the prettiest. I`m doing a simple scarf with garter stitch on the ends and narrow side borders and 2 repeats across the width. Two balls of bamboo will give a good length. Quick gift for people to knit!

Winter is here:-( Les, that`s exactly why I left Alberta. At the time I did not plan to spend 30 more winters in Quebec and Ontario - I was thinking of grad school in California! I`m here now!!!!

IWK holiday 2009 That`s pricey! Hope the publishers don`t add a big premium for Canada. The Canadian dollar is now $0.97US, but it takes weeks/months for American suppliers to make the adjustment when our dollar goes up and only a day or two when it goes down. Another great advantage of ordering from elann - instant adjustment!

Canadian Dollar and Knitting Retreats Canadians thinking about coming to Salt Spring Island for my June retreats - if the exchange rate is $0.95CDN = $1.00US or closer, I will accept payment at par if you pay in full when you sign up. June 21-28, 2010 is full but still spaces in June 10-17.
Americans, don`t worry, your rate is fixed.

So what`s tasmanian wool? It`s wool from Tasmania, the island state off the south coast of Australia. Google `tasmanian wool` and you`ll find lots about it.

Oh, those colours! It can split a bit, but overall is nice to work with. Colours are great and reflect lights and darks well in a drape. I had some very narrow scarves/necklaces in it as samples one year - knitted like beads with increases and decreases to make 3D shapes. I think you were here but not sure.

So what`s tasmanian wool? Do google it as you will find lots of info and reviews. It was way too much for me to summarize.

Oh, those colours! Just want to add that I have knitted it on a smaller needle than suggested - about a 4.00mm instead of 5mm - as I found it too floppy on the larger needle. Swatch before you begin anything then you`ll be happy.

Hi Bets: Take care of yourself, Bets.

Nuance Oh Dear! That`s an insult to the yarn and really should not appear in public. NG`s designs are fun to knit, but often just one motif rather than a whole herd of them is easier to wear.
That said, her hexagon scarf which starts with a large unit and works down to the smallest one is great. It curves so sits very neatly on a coat or sweater. The Merino Nuance would make a great one. Pattern is in her Knitting from Nature. Warning: it`s one of those patterns where you feel compelled to knit just one more unit before you go to bed.

How are you doin, Bets? So pleased you are feeling better. Make sure you take lots of knitting time each day and don`t overdo the `non-essentials`.

....ever had one of those days? I think you should either wash the yarn in Dawn or similar or else dip it into more grease and put it out for the birds!
As to the loaf, now you have a story to tell your clients, Les.

Fall is so beautiful this year If you have to have the `procedures`, so be it, think of all the things that you CAN do. You need to order yourself lots of yarn even if you just display it in baskets until something inspires you. Lots of new books out this fall, too. Maybe knit leaves.
Try to do what you are told as maybe you`ll outfox the docs` predictions.
Hugs
