Has anyone tried Navajo knitting method?
|
Great idea! Dani does this spinning, so there`s no reason why it wouldn`t work knitting. Will try it later after I revise another thesis chapter.
If this works well, we`ll do it at the retreats in June as another technique in hand-painted yarns.

It`s very pleasant to knit, not harsh like some cottons.

Think of it like this: you have sock yarn painted for stripes, each stripe is 120 inches long. You don`t want thin yarn or stripes. So, at the point of colour change, pull a loop 40 inches long (40" out and 40" back to the stitch you pulled through)and place it parallel to your working yarn. You now have a 40" section of three-ply all in one colour which will knit up into about 40 stitches on 4.5mm needles.
To soften a colour, you would pull out a loop in a different colour from your working yarn - in the above scenario, you would pull out a 60" loop and knit it along with the next colour change on your working yarn. If you wanted three colours mixed together, you would pull out a 120" loop (240" in total, out and back)and knit it with the next colour that comes up. Benne, you are just going to have to come. Don`t think I can photograph it - maybe Mark can as I knit it.

The provisional cast-on stitches should go on the working needle. Instead of knitting the original 40 stitches which you have put on the stitch holder to take a nap, you knit the new stitches to continue going around and increasing. Same for the other sleeve. Once you get past the first row with the new stitches, it`ll make sense.

Definitely do without the buttons, Bets. Snaps, or have flat buttons fasten inwards. Or just sew up the front unless you think you`d wear it open. With the right yarn it`ll look elegant sans buttons.

Fair skinned blonds don`t do well in that colour either - it`s for the goldy skin-toned ones. Those of us with bluish-tones are much better in the clear pinks. DD with the almost red hair and skin to go with it could wear it, if she wore pink. She was scarred for life against pink by the things people sent her as a small child in shades of pink that looked just dreadful on her. She looks great in muddy colours, I in clear. Be careful.

Order more yarn and start a new project, Benne. This one you are going to knit on your deck, not in hospital! Take care of yourself, but start new things.

Seeking intarsia advice-
|
Bets, how about knitting side to side? Then you are just knitting stripes. Ends are no problem as you just weave them in as you go along. Just remember to weave in the end of the old colour in the first row of the new, and then the new colour next time you get to that place - helps a lot to prevent the colour showing through.
A male knitter I knew made himself a box with spindles for the yarns for knitting stripes from the bottom up, but it was all rather complicated as he had to take out and wrap each new yarn.

Benne, make that list! and put getting back to Salt Spring near the top! Whatever time of year I`ll arrange to get some of the Elannites here at my house to knit with you - you get John`s bedroom again. (Benne and DS have not met, but she has slept in his bed several times, so last time she left him a note - he was delighted.) Do try to do what you are told.
Great big hugs Alice

Can You Stand One More?
|
Suzann, grrrrr as to the air boot. A few hints from my experience last year. 1) Buy several pairs of men`s 100% cotton athletic socks with no heels in the largest, longest size you can find, then cut and remove ALL the elastic at the top. You may want to change the sock during the day when the weather is hot, and yes, skin will come off. 2) Wear a shoe on the other foot with the thickest sole you have to even yourself up a bit, but still be careful as your balance will be off. 3) Going down steps or a slope is harder than going up, experiment which foot to put down first - I found it was the injured one. 4)Have someone wash your foot everyday and put cream on it - almost impossible to do for yourself. 5) Watch the air pressure, you may not need the same number of puffs on each side to support your foot. You may need to top up or release some air during the day. 6)Have lots of fun knitting to do for those hours each day when you must have your foot elevated.

I`ve got a date - OT
|
That`s a relief to have a date. How about arranging for your local version of `Molly Maid` to come in and do all that needs doing? Housework will not improve your health or strength - positively bad for them. Just about anything will go through the cuisinart. It`s the appearance of food which suffers rather than the taste. Baby food, on the other hand, has almost no taste. Plan knitting where you can see progress each day. Think about shadow knitting - the Vivian Hoxboro kit which Lorraine brought north for me last year was salvation with my broken ankle. I could manage the colour changes and alternating garter and stocking stitch with all my meds, but that was my limit. Just enough to keep me interested. You need to stock up on yarn in advance so that you can lie in a lounge chair and knit the summer away.

My daughter has a Lendrum. Portability was one of the things she was looking for. She bought a suitcase on wheels to fit it when folded up for when we went down to the Madrona Fiber Festival. It was easy to manage.

Are You Interested in Painting Yarn?
|
I know it`s short notice, but a couple of people have had to cancel from the first retreat - June 11-18 - so I have space for a few more. We are hand-dyeing and painting yarn and learning knitting techniques to show off hand-painted yarns to their best advantage - those you dye yourself and those wonderful skeins you have collected at fibre festivals and that one from Collinette or Noro you found in the little LYS in Bar Harbor, Cannon Beach, or maybe Gibson`s.
The retreat is 7 nights, all-inclusive on Salt Spring Island. Bonus day-trip to Victoria Fibre Festival. Gourmet meals - Friday`s menu is: B-Muesli with yoghurt and peaches, muffins; 11s-Bacon-wrapped dates, olives and cheese sticks; L-Harissa-fried lamb, salad, pita, hummus; T-Cucumber sandwiches, Clafoutis; D-Baked trout on fennel, fingerling potatoes, mixed greens, Stilton cheesecake.
Salt Spring Island is easy to get to with frequent float-plane and ferry service. Spouses/non-knitting partners accommodated at a special rate. If you are interested, or know someone who is, e-mail me at truemana@telus.net
