Ask for an explanation - in writing if you can get it - and a referral. His behaviour is not professional. Had he called you in a month ago to discuss his `concerns` and possible strategies, that would be different. The day before - no way! Is he off on a trip with some buddies? Check if he`s `out of town` next week.
When I broke my ankle, the surgeon on the Big Island consulted several times on Friday night with the duty doctor at our local hospital and then was waiting for me to arrive by ambulance at his hospital early (first ferry)Saturday morning of a long weekend so that he could operate - that`s service!

Do look at other options. For example a number of people from Britain go to hospitals in India for surgery - well trained doctors (often in Britain or US) and patients are sent to a resort to recuperate where they are given whatever assistance they need before they go home. Also, if a care facility is suggested for after sugery in the US, think about going to a good hotel - less expensive even with room service than a care facility and much more private and comfortable - and having someone come in to give you personal and medical care. Another possibility is to hire a nanny for 3 months to look after you at home - your insurance may not pay for a registered nurse, but a nanny is another matter. Cost is about $1000US a month in Canada. A number of nannies are trained nurses where they come from but being a "foreign domestic" is the only way they can legally work in Canada and have the opportunity to apply for permanent residence after 2 years if they have worked well and eventually citizenship. Worth looking into. Lots want to look after adults rather than young children.

That`s the right idea! Local is much easier to manage. Do you have a local nurse practitioner? public health nurse? Red Cross? VON agency? physiotherapist? These people are often very useful and can help you to choose and arrange practical things. Almost any equipment can be rented.
Simple, inexpensive adaptions can be a huge help. My eldest brother had a sturdy stainless steel pole installed in their bedroom so that he could steady himself with one hand to get out of bed. Try out a model of everything you are considering if you can - whilst in the wheelchair with my ankle, I discovered that most handicap washrooms have the bars in quite the wrong places (on the far side of the toilet against the wall) whereas the 3 ft. high wall in front of the toilet at home worked extremely well and was much safer.
Take someone with you to the next doctor - equipped with pen and large notepad or clipboard. Puts you in a much stronger position.
See if that nice girl from Brazil can come sooner!

Socks

If you finish one pair and give them to someone in the family, then all the rest will hover over you until you finish their pairs. Then you`ll finish them just to make the pressure go away. One of DD`s housemates is already angling for his next pair. The other one has been on the sock list for years - always shows me that he`s wearing them whenever we meet - or else shows me he`s had to wear regular socks for a day due to his great need for more hand-knitted ones so that he has a pair for everyday of the week! Another thing to try is to knit a fancy toe on the unfinished one - bright red is always good - make it fun.

Note about Patons Decor Yarn
|
Decor is a good yarn for rough-and-tumble wear - washes well in the machine. Knits to Paton`s Canadiana patterns, so lots of pattern support. Much easier on the hands to knit than Canadiana.

kaffe fassett poppy jacket

Look for that shape jacket in his other patterns - he repeats shapes a lot. I think the band is a wide cable - you can probably find it on other sweaters or vests of his. Thick wool makes the poppies large - but probably using the same graph.

More to last night. In the same Glorious Colour, look at the Geometric Star Jacket pp51-61 for a shape. Glorious Knits has more versions of Persian Poppies pp.140-143. There`s a close-up of the jacket pattern on p.131, top right corner, but no written pattern. Different front bands. Nicky Epstein`s Knitting Beyond the Edge has some good patterns for cabled bands.
