Where is Salt Spring Island?
|
Salt Spring Island is the largest of the Canadian Southern Gulf Islands. We are part of a group of little islands between the mainland and Vancouver Island (the Big Island)just north of the San Juan Islands in Washington State. We have reliable ferry service to the mainland and two places on Vancouver Island and scheduled float plane service with four airlines. We are very sheltered and surrounded by water, so have a climate similar to northern California. We have just over 10,000 people (mostly eccentric) and maybe 3,000 sheep (mostly mellow).

Where is Salt Spring Island?

Yes, Vicki, all those sorts. Lots of aging hippies, but also retired university profs, surgeons, writers, several meteorologists, teachers, stock brokers who stepped off the world, etc. Younger people working from home on the internet, people in second careers. What we really need is more plumbers. At $85 an hour is hard to understand why there is such a shortage. Just think, you could send yopur husband out to plumb and you could sit and knit all day watching the boats go by - of course he might insist that you plumb, too!

Yes, Marie, you would have passed SSI - on the right side going to Victoria. If it was anytime between April and October, you may have noticed people and their tents in a park right on the waterfront - the ferry goes fairly close to shore.

OT Northern Vermont???
|
Do drive or take the train up to Vermont - it`s beautiful! We went there a lot when we lived in Montreal. Strange coincidence - I looked up Lyndon State College and noticed they had a Dept. of Meteorology. Clicked on department history to discover the Belknap College meteorology department moved there in the 1970`s when Belknap closed. After Mark finished grad school at McGill he had an interview at Belknap (Center Harbor, NH) for a professorship. We went down and had a good look around, really liked the place but it didn`t seem economically viable, all the faculty we talked to had second and third sources of income to supplement their salaries. Pay was lower than the Met Service here, and teachers` salaries were lower than in Quebec and Ontario (counting in the exchange rate) The department head sent me off to have a look at the nearest high school, but I discovered that the building had been condemned decades before but was still in use. It would have been an adventure but we stayed in Canada. Do visit before you make your minds up. What does DS want to study?

Knit it up quickly and bring it to Salt Spring, Benne. Lisa, should be fine for summer evenings in Alaska! Don`t you need a little something around your shoulders at 10pm? I`m enabling - I ordered a bag of each colour! Wonder if that`s going to be enough?

Should work just fine. Look at Sasha Kagan`s books, too. Very good ideas about colour. If you want to use a heavier background yarn, just double or triple the tapestry yarn - different shades knitted as one add a lot of depth. Alice Salt Spring Island

it is beautiful and sunny
|
We`re having the forecast coastal windstorm but also a bit of snow as we are "at higher altitudes" here. Had enough of this winter - it`s supposed to be sunny with all the daffodils out. We`re having friends come for an early supper andthen watching the curling Brier finals. They live at sea level so hope they`ll be able to get up the ridge. Working hard to get the rest of my thesis revised and satisfy my supervisor - she keeps saying "More!More!" but the 80 pages that it`s supposed to be are now about 160. She`s just got back from a month in Australisa and New Zealand, so I`ve probably got a day or two more thanks to jet lag.
Just finished a scarf in handpainted yarn in Barbara Walker`s `Subtle Mesh` pattern (Book 3 - the yellow one)- looks great. The short colour repeats form concentrations of colour which zigzag across, but because of the mesh pattern, no blobs. Those of you coming to dye yarn in June will see it and get to try it out. It`s a fun knit.
