Ok, girls-

If the beads are a huge problem strung on the yarn you are knitting with, try putting them on with a crochet hook as you need them, as follows: Knit to bead position, insert small crochet hook through the hole in the bead, catch the working yarn with the hook and pull it through the bead. Put this `loop through the bead` on the left needle, knit it, and cinch up the yarn. Continue knitting until you reach next bead position.
This is quicker than it sounds if you are adding just a few beads. Try a little swatch slipping the loop, purling the loop, purling the stitch on each side of the loop, etc to see which shows off your bead best.
Failing all else, sew on the beads after you finish the knitting.

I`m knitting away on a version of Mags Kandis` Modern Quilt Wrap in a hand-painted lace weight that I bought at the Madrona Fiber Festival last weekend as a sample for the June retreats. Instead of having all those ends with the colour changes in the original, I am just knitting whatever comes. Mine will be smaller - more scarf than shawl - unless I add more squares or maybe an edging (original is in sportweight Silk Haze). I must confess that Suzanne S has a beautiful one in mohair/silk which I hope she will bring with her, so no way was I going to compete!

Try the wool sock foot massage on him whilst you are knitting. Just rub his back or tummy with your socked feet as you knit and he`ll plead with you to knit another row.
Sure works on my big fat white cat while I`m on my computer - she lies in a strategic place on the floor rather than across my keyboard. Must be handknit wool socks, though.

I answered your message twice but neither seems to be posted. I did a rough translation on the pattern and forwarded it to Christian (SDIL) for him to check. He`s German and knits. Maybe an answer soon.

Neat. Doesn`t have all the local ones (100 mile radius) for here but does have FunKnits on Quadra Island - Naomi, Joan, and Suzanne have been there. Maybe stores need to register.

Help! I need a Canadian!
|
Under NAFTA, almost all goods manufactured in the USA come into Canada `duty free` - it`s a free trade agreement that works both ways, so most Canadian goods are supposed to be admitted duty free into the USA as well. The GST, a goods and services tax, is a federal government sales tax, and that can be charged on imported goods - usually at whim on items coming in the post. This was reduced to 5% on Jan 1st, 2008. That means $5 on $100 value, $50 on a $1000, etc., which is not too bad. The annoying part is that little sub-post offices are permitted to charge an additional $5 to collect it. Almost all the parcels I receive from the USA come through with no GST. My rural mail man does his best to squeeze them into one of the parcel compartments in our communal mail boxes - I have even had to use a screwdriver to ease a box out. If you are sending the parcel to a residential address, it should be fine.

I`m cutting my hair
|
The hair will grow back - just avoid bangs for easy upkeep.
Shedding skin is something you need to pamper - mine all peeled off once after a bad drug reaction that culminated in a week in hospital. Pamper it. Cotton clothing. Use lots of soothing, unscented cream and lotion. A kind pharmacist gave me a whole bunch of samples to try and then I went back and bought the giant size of Aveno, but different ones help different people. Some foods caused more shedding, too. So keep a diary of what you eat and if you react. Broccoli and nuts did me in. Chlorinated water was painful - fortunately we had a well at home but I had to wash my hands at school. Soap, forget about it, plain water is cleansing. Try half the detergent, or less, in your washing machine and use a longer wash cycle - better for the environment, too.
We don`t care if you are bald and flaking off everywhere in June, just get here!

Our local weekly newspaper has a `free` section in the classifieds. Useful, and people just phone in or drop off their ads at the office. Response seems to be very good here - it`s an island thing! Never any 100% alpaca, though.

Help with repairs, please?

Depending where the big holes are, maybe you can add embellishments to cover them and a few extra to look like a design feature as Marta suggests. If the sweater has a definite pattern, you could knit it larger - like zoom in - and attach in appropriate places.
Another possibility is to knit bugs - Sasha Kagan has some useful ones in her books - and attach.Or maybe horseshoes to fit barn work.
