Is your plastic one really toast? Mine became completely jammed (by an experienced knitter/designer/author who should have known better), which made me furious. After it faced the corner for a while, I really needed it, so I gazed into the innards with a flashlight and probed and picked out yards and yards of chewed up sock yarn with my serger tweezers and a darning needle. It`s worked like a charm ever since. It`s a plastic `Royal`. I also have an electric `Simet` which is very fast. It`s worth trying a bit of corrective surgery as it`s always useful to have two.

Jayne, you really need to have a little chat with your mailman. Maybe accompanied by a pair of handknit socks! Mine arrived before yours, on the island, and you`re on the mainland. I got a card in the mailbox to pick up the package at the sub-post office in a grocery store in the village, and had to wait until the next day to actually get it as they had too many parcels to sort the day they came in, so made everyone wait.
A little bribery is in order. Alice Salt Spring Island

Hey T, and all you HUGers (OT)
|
There`s a company in Ontario which shapes the cow patties in molds - frogs, snails, etc - bakes them, and sells them for people to place in their gardens as slow-disolving fertilizer. They sell in boutique garden stores and are not inexpensive.

Feed and water him and he`ll grow to fit it sooner than you ever imagined, so don`t worry. Besides, his shirt tails won`t show when they hang out of his pants.

Now I Need To Know About Weasely Gifts
|
Can work the other way. During my student days in Alberta I asked my parents (living in a house over looking the ocean and Mt Baker in Victoria BC) for new snow tires which I really needed. My mother decided that a silver tray was much more appropriate. Granted, I still have the tray and have gone through many sets of snow tires.

The Grinch stole my holiday plans and time! Whining follows

Put up one creche, floodlight it, and keep all the other lights low. Then people won`t notice the floor or the work of those hyper-active spiders - it really works! If you have guests for a meal - use candles even if it`s for breakfast.
Take care of yourself, Benne, let others pamper you. Give everyone Elann gift certificates and a pattern for future knitting and you have your problems solved. It`s you your family wants not great production.

Feeling Puny
|
Write all the things that really need to be done on slips of paper, put them into a bag, and have everyone draw in turn until there are none left. If someone gets `Christmas cookies` and can`t bake, she can get really good ones at a bakery, etc. Meanwhile, you lie on the sofa with cups of tea with lemon and honey, and groan or exclaim at appropiate intervals! Stroke yarn at intervals. Pretend to be asleep if you suspect a crisis is looming.

I`m in hot water! OT
|
Running water is far more important than hydro - the trick is to keep them running separately! Nothing worse than no water. Here on the ridge water comes from a BIG tank up above us so keeps running by gravity - big plus for this lot over one with an electric pump when we built.
The purses are wonderful, Benne, keep knitting them!

Can you help me with this?
|
The original yarn is thinner than the yarn you want to use. The original takes a 3.75mm needle to get gauge, your yarn takes a smaller needle to get gauge, therefore it is thicker. If the row gauge is the same, you`ll need the same amount of yarn. If it is more rows = 4 inches, you`ll need more yarn. If it is fewer rows = 4 inches you will need less. Buy a little extra to be safe.

Merry Christmas Ann to you and your family. Try not to even think about yarn for at least a day.
