How Much Sonata Should I Buy :D Hi suzann, this is my first time chatting here. I recommend that you look at a few patterns using the same weight of yarn to get a sense of how much they use -- and order a similar amount. Lots of great free patterns to view at Knitting Pattern Central. Then you`ll be ready for whatever you decide later on. Good luck!

What`s on the needles, what`s got your attention?? I`m an ADD knitter -- got WAY too many projects on the go at once. But my faves right now: an afghan (Square Windows Throw from Knit It!). Four squares done...sixteen to go. On the needles today (and determined to get off the needles today) my first attempt at a sock in DK weight (Regia crazy colour Fiesta). Actually it`s turning out well -- the Classic Beginnings Socks for the Family is a great recipe for socks in all guages. My daughter is demanding a pair next.

What`s on the needles, what`s got your attention?? YeeHaaaaa!!! First sock off needles and on my foot!! Mmmmmm...comfy...Now I think I`ll get the next one cast on right away, so this one does not become an orphelan.

I can totally relate to the drunk bee, Karin -- currently on various sizes of needles I have a shawl, a sleeves-only shrug, a scarf, and 3/4 of the back of a summer top. These on top of a lot of finished backs and sleeves of other things. Every now and then, I work at getting everything OFF of the needles and one or two things completely finished. But today, I`m going for the second sock.

life challanges or knitting opportunities? Yep, I`ve brought small knitting projects to restaurants -- when we go out as a family, but not when DH and I go out on our own. In the car on long drives, at the ortho (waiting for the kids), in the car waiting for the kids to come out after school, and especially when I`m at awkward family gatherings, and I need to be there, but I don`t want to be "all" there. :)

Interesting new knitting books I just ordered a new book from KnitPicks -- called Knitting Nature by Norah Gaughan. Like I needed another book, but I love them -- the project pix provided by KnitPicks were a great appetizer, and reviews sound really good. Apparently beautiful designs and photography. Is anyone familiar with this one?

I`m almost halfway done sock #2 now -- gotta get it off the needles before my sonata arrives on (Monday?)

knittynicky Hi -- thanks for the welcome! I am not new to Elann, but new to chatting about knitting, here or anywhere. Still figuring out the terms (DH -- tell me, dear husband, darling husband, dreaded husband????). In any case if that`s what it is, I have one and a 9yrold daughter (DD?), and 13yrold son. At 41, I am thankfully out of the target range of hipsters that Vogue`s K1 has in sight. Especially grateful for that this month. We live in Port Moody (Vancouver BC) with our beloved pet hamster (BH??) named Pepper.

What else? I used to teach junior high school. I studied at a seminary for several years. A bit of an over-achiever, I burned out rather badly about three and a half years ago and have had to re-structure my life. One of the key elements of that turned out to be knitting. I didn`t have the energy for much, so about three years ago exactly I saw a friend knitting something with Bernat DenimStyle, and saw a free pattern for a sweater on the ball band, and went out and bought needles and yarn and an "I Can`t Believe I`m Knitting!" book and made the sweater. It turned out huge on me. The pattern told me it was for a 34" bust, but I did not notice that "finished size" was 44 (and mine was more like 48). Good early learning experience. And when I washed it, it became about 1/3 bigger again. Another good early learning experience. Since then, I have knitted so many things I`ve lost track. I`m a selfish knitter -- I knit mainly for myself (sweaters, tanks, jackets, hats, scarves, ponchos, and my fave: a fitted, cabled bolero, pattern by Karabella). But I`ve made a hat and scarf for DH, cosy bulky socks, ear-flaps hat, and a hoodie for the boy, ponchos, scarves, hats, pullovers for the girlie. And myriad hats and scarves for gifts for everyone else.

Nowadays I`m branching out into my first shawl, afghan, socks in yarn weights that will fit into shoes, and a clothing item in DK yarn that I`m determined to finsh this time. DK usually stops me in my tracks about halfway along. I`m planning to make that Chickami (sp?) when my Sonata arrives. I got the mayan because it looked dark and dramatic (I have very dark hair).

I tend to get a bit obsessive about my interests, so I`ve accumulated a lot of yarn and patterns, books, etc. over the last three years. Unfortunately that never stops me from scooping up whatever else comes along, as soon as it comes along (like the Sonata which I vowed I would resist, but alas...). I`m teaching a few friends how to knit these days, and one of them was on the phone with me the other day. We were chatting on the phone and looking at the Elann site at the same time. I had just ordered sock yarn -- that latest stuff -- and Karin was oohing and ahing. I told her that some of the colours would sell out before our watching eyes, so we watched and, indeed, certain colours were disappearing, like an auction in reverse. She couldn`t take the pressure and bought half a dozen balls. And then we laughed when we refreshed the page and saw the numbers go down again. Easily amused. But she is definitely a knitter now.

Health-wise, I`m doing a lot better now. I`ve spent a lot more money on therapy than on yarn, so I figure it`s all relative. I still love to knit for part of every day, sometimes for a large part of a day, but I also love to write, ride my bike, paint, go for long rambling walks, and get together with good friends.

Thanks for asking -- looking forward to chatting with you -- you soudned like a friendly lot in past postings.

Oops! My bad Now you really know who I am!

I just noticed that bri was talking to "Knittynicky" when I thought she was talking to me. Okay I`m new at this. But please....can I chat too?? :)

My little bio is there in response to bri`s message below if you want to know about me. But we still need to hear from Nicole!

I can be terribly dense,

life challanges or knitting opportunities? I found that I got a lot less bored when I had something that I like to do with me. And in potentially stressful social situations, it keeps me feeling settled.

Oops! My bad Thanks all! I feel right at home. The man and the boy are out of town on a sailing trip, and I have to take my daughter to a birthday party this afternoon -- that just happens to be very near to a yarn store (an AMAZING yarn store) that I rarely get to because of location. Guess what I`m going to do while she is at the party?? Should I take my wallet???

Interesting new knitting books Ooooohhhhhhh...that sweater is beautiful!!!! I want one. Can`t wait for my book to come. The cover also has a beautiful blanket, and KnitPicks shows about 10 photos of what`s inside -- some lovely summer tops, and a cardi that I`m drooling over.

Oh happy day...I`m in yarn ecstasy I did go to the yarn store -- and I did take my wallet -- and I did come away with yarn so delicious, I just want to look at it for a while. Patagonia nature cotton for a tank, and some Koigu painter`s palette for socks.

Does anyone else have yarn that stays in its lovely little skein -- just for sighing over, squeezing? If so, what kind?

I`m definitely going to have to build that moat, Benne.

Oh happy day...I`m in yarn ecstasy I`ll have to check out BlueSky Alpaca. Berroco Ultra Alpaca is pretty lovely (making my shawl out of that).

Up to now my favorite Favorite FAVORITE yarn in the skein to squeeze and cuddle has been Malabrigo. It is absolutely the softest merino ever. Kettle-dyed in Uruguay. It comes in these adorable skeins that have been twisted and tied into a knot like a yarn pastry. The colours are alive. My favorite is glazed carrot. But for eye candy, definitely the koigu.

The ladies at Knit `n Stitch (if you ever get to Vancouver, must go), said they have a customer who buys yarn to put in a decorative basket in her living room. She is not a knitter.

Back from girls road trip! That trip sounded lovely -- getting off to a rustic and beautiful location with favorite people and good memories and laughing... does it get any better than that?

Peeks are up! Not going to glace...although I am a harlot for greens, and I like both of those...Nevertheless...not going to glace...

I am going to be strong and work on my Patagonia -- also in wonderful greens, browns, blues. I found the right pattern for my four balls in Sally Melville`s purl stitch book (sleeveless and simple shell).

I finished sock #2 -- been wearing them both all day today, and I`ve got 7" done on the back of the shell. Patagonia is delightful -- like knitting with a soft cotton dreadlock. It`s cotton, and it`s thick and thin, so I have to be a bit aggressive, but that`s what the Skacel stainless steel needles are for. Normally, I`m a bamboo kind of girl.
