Extremely OT, but hope it makes you laugh Funny now! But probably not so funny when it was happening! No coffee, even.

Great book! I spent my elann gift certificate money on Big Girl Knits and some of the hemp.

My goodness, everyone said that it was a great book, but nobody said how rip-roaring FUNNY it is. Or how empowering in terms of body image. It`s got great information on tailoring garments to fit YOUR body that are great even if you aren`t a big girl. If you don`t have the book, then go take a look at the library or get it here. And buy one for your favorite big girl, even if it`s you.

It`s about the only thing that put a smile on my face today--what with the extreme heat that has me yet another day on self-imposed house arrest. My thermometer says 99. I hate this weather and global warming!

a technological milestone Congrats Bri!

I purchased my first laptop in 2000. I don`t think that I`ll ever go back to just a desktop. Nothing more exciting for someone in school than getting a new computer. I got a new one last fall, and I was over the moon!

Ok, what`s on the needles- I`m crocheting a market bag out of the Canapone. Too fine to make a top out of, but I do like it for a shopping bag. I`ll have the coolest bag at the farmers` market.

Need to finish a silk organza ribbon cardigan. I`m bad about finishing things, but very good at starting them.

Most recent contest winners Super job!

Square needles!! I saw them in a local store. I think it`s an interesting idea. The shopkeeper said that they were good for people with some motor difficulties--easier to hold and won`t roll off the table.

Duckmom Benne: what a beautiful creature! How many babies have you raised this season?

Duckmom Benne: I have a new email addy, and maybe you have one too, as the email I sent came back.

I`ve asked MacChick to help connect us for ducky pics.

Duckmom Of course animals have emotions. It`s kindof silly that some humans still deny this. After all, how can you explain some of the things that they do? Or, how did humans come to have emotions? Humans tend to forget that we are animals as well, not some import from another planet unrelated to the earth-creatures!

Yes, my felines consider me the food gravy train, as I give them their food so that they don`t have to hunt, but they come to me WAY more often for love and attention than they do for food.

My jasper alpaca just arrived! Is it the heathering that`s so beautiful? It looks gorgeous online. I do not NEED more yarn unless I grow another pair of hands, so perhaps this is the junkie in me asking you to describe what`s so great about this yarn in this color....

BTW: did you get my last email to you? I had a question about the runner ducks in there.

You Knit What is winding down- My gosh, what an embarassment to knitting as a whole. What a PoS.

Shawl Obsessive Grace:

Don`t lose heart (but you`ve got a big one!). You just need to find the right partner. I`m sure that you will. The animal org I used to volunteer for was so happy for kitty beds, of any kind.

You just haven`t found the right outlet, but start with what the others have suggested and work from there. Soon enough, you`ll have found a taker for all the shawls you can produce.

Maybe the person you got at the local place wasn`t particularly helpful, but that doesn`t mean that nobody wants them. You just got a particularly misinformed or misguided individual. Maybe that person was having a bad or uncreative day. Man, if I were going through chemo and somebody gave me a handknitted something to keep me warm, I would bust out crying.

Perhaps a hands-on approach? (Give them to the chemo/radiation nurses in person at a hospital?) Do you have any friends who are nurses or doctors or hospice care people?

Selling yarn ( and stuff) on eBay I`m an oldie ebayer (joined in 1998, i think), and I was also put off by the paypal thing. But it has worked without a hitch. The only thing to watch for is the charges you get for receiving money. It`s always free to send money, but you pay for receiving. In certain cases this can be a bite out of a small transaction.

I`m going to Stitches today! I`m in Chicago staying at a friend`s place and am waiting to get in the car to go to stitches today to drool at yarn and such.

Not too thrilled with the new location where parking will be $11 (I hate paying for parking), whereas it used to be free at the old venue. But I do have a coupon for admission to the market, so that`s good.

I don`t have a lot of money right now (I get paid only 9 months out of the 12), so wish me luck!

Stitches update! Okay, here’s the Stitches update:

It’s definitely worth going to if you’re in the area, but there’s a mix of bad news and good news.

The bad news first: there are some annoying things about the Chicago show now, mostly related to the Rosemont location. The $11.00 for parking is unpleasant. Cash only, mind you, and there’s no place around for us cheapies to park and walk a few blocks (it’s within spitting distance of the airport). But I sucked it up and paid it. Plus, that convention center is the most oddly designed place I’ve ever seen. You have to wander through miles of a rabbit’s warren, hoping that you’re following the right path towards yarn nirvana. I didn’t get lost, but it was a long way from said expensive parking. A soda from the soda fountain (not a can) was $2.25. Sheesh. Glad I brought a sandwich.

The old location was great in that the parking was free, so you could escape and go get some food outside the venue or just take a breath of fresh air. No longer, as fresh air is a long way away and probably smells like airplane exhaust.

The other bizarre thing was related to a vendor of ribbons and sundries. They had a marvelous display, and I took out my camera to get a picture of the place for a friend who couldn’t go because her father is ill. An attendant ran out and actually made me erase the picture, all the while seeming to give me the impression that I was doing important Spy Work for some Evil Enemy Ribbon Empire out there. It wasn’t nice; she pointed to a tiny sign about the sign of a postage stamp on the wall that said “no pictures.” All inspiration to buy anything from the charming display went “poof.” If she had been sociable about it, it would have been fine.

THE GOOD STUFF:

It is a yarn heaven, so here are my highlights:

Brooks Farm Yarn is a fabulous product (I had succumbed to their wares at the New York Sheep and Wool a couple of years ago), and their employees exude Texas charm. The ribbon shop should take a lesson from them. The yarn is squishy and lovely with thoughtful, inspiring colors. Yes, I bought.

Habu Textiles is always fascinating. Again, I succumbed to the siren’s song and bought some tiny little balls of interesting, quirky stuff which will be a funky something one day, once I stop fondling them. They are most famous for the stainless yarn, which they had sold out of. The clerk even bowed to me (very Japanese) as she took my money.

The Fold, a spinning shop in Marengo, IL was there, so I got to say hello to Toni, the owner. She’s such a lovely and warm person, and Franklin’s experience there mirrors mine. It was nice to see her again, even briefly. You can read about Franklin’s day here:
http://the-panopticon.blogspot.com/2006/04/welcome-to-fold_18.html

I got to meet Caryll from Caryll Designs, who took over Nancy Bender’s Moco Yarns' qiviut. I got some fiber to spin myself. Decadent. Before you go to the great yarn store in the sky, you must fondle some qiviut. I had ordered from her over the internet some time ago, but it was good for both of us to meet in person. A generous soul, she even was giving away some charming patterns for the luxury fiber: http://www.carylldesigns.com/patchwork_qiviut_cap.htm

All it all a good but expensive day; the NY Sheep and Wool still ranks at the top of the yarn-lovers extravaganza IMHO, but it’s far away for me and in the middle of the school year, so I don’t expect to be able to go again.

Stitches update! Bets: Don’t let my grumbles say that I won’t go again. I had a great time, minus crazy ribbon lady (there was nothing to copy, just vintage buttons and ribbons) and crazy parking stuff. Now that I almost NEVER pay for parking, it’s hard to cough up money for parking. I’ll choose to walk a few more blocks than pay to deposit my car on a piece of concrete.

I should add that if I lived here, I too would have taken public transport as time wouldn’t have been an issue. However, I had just read an article about how slowly the public transport was in Chicago, particularly this summer, so I wasn’t going to waste valuable time that way, as it would have been a very long commute with many changes of transportation for me. It is perhaps more convenient for those flying in, as it’s a hop, skip, and jump from the airport. Probably super-convenient for those staying in the conference hotel. I just wasn’t in the type of space where I wanted to waste time sitting on a bus. Had I had more time, there were cheaper options.

Amy: sorry about the no festivals near you. That’s a real bummer. Maybe there’s a smaller fiber fest somewhere near you? We had a local (very first year!) fiber festival in my neck of the woods. I think that people are noticing that fiber fests are profitable. Or schedule a vacation in conjunction with one of the big fests. As I said, Stitches is nice, but the NY sheep and wool has my heart. It’s also in the fall, which makes buying wool nicer. Plus you get to walk outside some, park your car in a field, and it feels a bit like a harvest festival.
