Vegenbogen gegen Regenbogen
|

I think that bets wins with the proof.
Elann still thinks it`s Vegenbogen (got an email back on that).

The Inconstant Gardener- with apologies to John le Carre

Very funny Benne. I`m battling bunnies who PULL UP the darn flowers. What they want, I dunno.
You made me laugh with the garden claw/toilet commment. Send that in to the people who make that tool!

Rainbows!

Did you see that the Elann color Vegenbogen is now named Regenbogen?
Rainbows all around for Elann and for sharp-eyed German-speakers who found good evidence for rainbows!

Mowing
|
Well, I just mowed my first lawn. And i`m tired. I got one of those old-fashioned reel mowers. I couldn`t stand the idea of walking behind a noisy, gas-powered thing. (I don`t even use a blowdryer because I hate the noise.) But boy, am I ever hot.

Mowing
|
Actually, I should have said that the reel mower works great. Really. It cuts cleanly and evenly and supposedly the reel mower cut is better for the grass, as it works just like a pair of scissors and cuts neatly.
So, I`ve chosen the mower and will stick with it.
It`s just that the "power" for the mower is an absolute out of shape wimpette. That and being outdoors and being hot.....

I`m a new mother - again
|
You go! Wow. 14 beaks. I`m watching just 5 beaks of house finches being raised outside my kitchen window, and it`s tiring work. All that hauling of half-digested bugs and stuff.
Hope your weakling gains strength.

Our dinner with Charles and Bri!

Sounds like you had fun. I`m just waiting for Bri to make it to the land of the cornfields and lots of older people so that she can do some research.
Then I will have met an elannite in person!

What are they smoking?
|
I just got an offer from one of the used book sites I frequent. Starmore`s Aran Knitting.....for.....wait for it...$880. Yes, that`s right and not a typo. What are they smoking? Greedy little people. $880 for a knitting book?
Catbookmom: happy you figured out your computer stuff. I`m sunk deep in exam writing and sick to boot, so didn`t get a chance to respond to you about that.

Question for spinners - does this look like something interesting?
|
MY! I think that`s a Reeves. In walnut, as it looks just like my find which I`m looking at now.
Jump and jump quickly. It will be expensive. If it`s a Reeves, there will be a makers mark and a production number. Do a search for my crowing on this forum about my Reeves garage sale find and you`ll find a bit more information.

Hey, you two. I think that this may be an indication that you`re about to start spinning. If it`s what I think it is, then it shouldn`t go to a home where it`s just "folksy decoration."
Forgot to tell you about where to find the makers mark. Turn it over. The underside of that largest piece is where you should find the inscription--at least that`s where it is on mine.

Question for spinners - does this look like something interesting?

Lisa: I don`t think that it`s an Ashford.
Look at the detailed turnings on it. Ashford is really more of a down and dirty kind of affair, without much in the decorative or aesthetic realm. Good tools, but not a lot that`s decorative about them.
The quality of the turnings indicate to me that this is a wheel made in a smaller production setting, and if I could find my digital camera , I would take a picture of my wheel to post here (though the pics on this site have to be so teeny...).
Hopefully the auction will allow for some snooping beforehand. I really think it`s handmade, not ancient, but modern, and that there`s a strong chance that it`s a Reeves. If it`s modern and handmade, there`s also a strong chance that the maker signed it somewhere, so hopefully you will know before the auction starts.
Do let us know what happens! Very exciting.

Oh, wow. A superstar issue. I can see why people want it.
What is up with those knitters people? They lost me with that hideous sock scarf. Ugh. Makes me shiver. Did the management change?
I wish Threads still did knitting. They had good stuff in the late 1980s.

My goodness. This story is just too cute. Small town greets the queen`s representative.
It actually sounds like the beginning of a movie. What would happen next?

Benne, when you were using "The Claw"
|
This might not be your cup of tea....but....
I`ve been using a plain old garden fork to do this--get the weeds and errant grass out of the garden beds. Works much better for me than the other stuff. Not as heavy as using a shovel and it pulls the grass roots right out. I just flip the dirt over--putting the grass side down in the ground. My hope is that the grass roots will die and that the decomposing grass will help fertilize (at least that`s what the Irish used to do when planting potatoes the "lazy bed" way).

Is this Dutch hoe the same thing as a "scuffle hoe" or a "stirrup hoe"? (Looks like a movable stirrup)
