OMG! Evelyn`s Fruitcake Story...
|
Sure, MacChick, go ahead and share my story. It sure is one that I will never forget. I could tell you some stories about my experience while working 12 hours nights in charge of nursing staff at at a large city hospital. Everything from ghosts, to the swat team arriving, to finding patients in bizzare situations. I seem to be one of those people who is a magnet for disaster. Evelyn

Knitting for the Canadian Troups
|
Does anyone know if there is a group where you can send those helmet liners for the Canadian troups in Afghanistan? Also, I think there is a pattern floating around out there for these most useful items. I have a neighbour who likes to knit but has nobody to knit for.

Needle Storage?
|
I have the entire Knit Pick Options needles and I love them. I also have tons of Addi`s but since I got the Options I never use the Addi`s. The Addi`s are stored in one of the pink (way too expensive) Ashland Sky cases. My straights are in vases like the others. My sock needles from Japan are in a cute little roll-up that I made myself but it never gets opened, since I use the same ones all the time. The Options are the best thing since sliced bread. Everything you need is in one place and the case is small. I couldn`t find a complaint about them if I tried. Evelyn

What color CE "Paintbox" are you?

If you want great service, you`ve got to stick with Elann. How many times has anyone complained about their service? Not one I bet. Evelyn

I would choose the wtercolour green or the french ultramarine. For some reason I don`t choose anything with multiple colours. Maybe I find it too cluttered. I`m one of those people who can`t start anything until the room I`m working in is clean & tidy. The kitchen has to be all cleaned up before I can start to cook again. Maybe it`s a mental illness. Surprise, surprise! Evelyn

So sorry to hear of your fall Alice. Make sure you keep in touch so we can pump you for answers to our knitting troubles. You might find the physio the hardest challenge in this whole thing but if you do as your told, you will be back in action sooner than you might think. Evelyn

Felted lace
|
Funny you should mention this T. I am in the process of doing just that. Although, I don`t think my lace is anything like what you are talking about. I have knit a white purse and I`m putting a lacy flap on the front of it. It`s just some crocheted chain like thingies that make up a trangular piece for the front. I`ll post the picture if it turns out. First I had to learn to crochet so you know how entailed the pattern might be. Very simple. Evelyn

back from MN- what a yarn scene
|
Bri... that`s so exciting that you have met 10 Elannites. What an accomplishment! It seems you are always getting on a plane to somewhere. Maybe someday it will be my turn. We are thinking of going to South Beach in February. That`s probably too far from your place. You are on the Gulf coast aren`t you. My sister spends the winter on the Panhandle (Destin). She said the same thing about the lack of yarn stores in Fla. Evelyn

Hope that title didn`t get anyone excited. I made a little felted purse out of Noro Kureyan. I knit it loosely with one strand of yarn and of course it turned out to be "see through". It was very floppy and definately needed something to perk it up. I bought some iron-on interfacing at the fabric store. I got the heaviest one they had. I turned the purse inside out and ironed the interfacing onto the Kureyan. And then I had a firm bag that I can now line with a pretty fabric and it should look pretty good. It`s kind of a funky little teenage bag with crystal beaded handles. Cute.
Also, I knit a very complicated pattern into a very nice bag. However, I should have known.... I didn`t use a quality wool. I think it was called Naturgarn and was only about $4.00 a skein. I put a lot of work into it but it`s only as good as the materials you start out with. I learned a lesson AGAIN. Evelyn

Emily.....your grey sweater
|
As I was scrolling down looking at all the fantastic works of art, I spotted a grey sweater with a picture of a beautiful grey kittie on it. Wow, was my first impression...then I realized that it was actually that funny little guy who is new at your house. Take another look at your picture...now isn`t that a beautiful rendition of a picture of a cat? I love it. Evelyn

Thank you Benne. Have you noticed that all I make is purses. Everytime I start a sweater, I quit with lack of interest. I find the most fun part is the embellishments after it is felted. You have to know just when enough is enough. I tend to rely on my DH to have a look and pass a comment. Without realizing it, he has a big influence on my finishing techniques. I`m so envious of all of you and your incredible knitting. Making a bag is easy but a shawl....OMG....I wish. The socks are fun but then you have to knit one more. If I only had one leg I would be all set. As soon as I see the pattern emerging, I`m ready to try another. I guess I`m the one who takes a bite out of each chocolate in the box and leaves the rest. That`s what is so much fun at this chat site. We all have our specialities and we can enjoy all of the others. Evelyn

Yes Les we are....In fact we teamed up with another group of artists and we created the "Horizons Open Studio Tour & Sale" on December 2 & 3.We have been busy distributing flyers and I printed coloured postcards of just our work to send out with our annual mailing. This is the first time I have been included as an artist. I feel a little out of my realm, with painters, master potters, jewellery makers, glass bead and textile artists. So you can see we have a great variety of artists participating. Too bad most of you are so far away, it would be wonderful to see all of you.
I have somewhere in the neighbourhood of 20 purses available. Most of them are my own ideas. I usually start with a pattern on my lap but eventually I forget I have a pattern and just carry on in my own way. If I need to refer back to my pattern, I can never find it.
My dream is to be able to create some of the things I see on the sidebar here. Our members do such beautiful work. Some great talent out there and I think we help each other to improve. Evelyn

Knitting frustration
|
And I thought it was just knitting we all had in common.
Benne, I`m so sorry you have joined the aches and pains group. I like my doctors advice. If you have to knit, then knit. Just don`t knit more than a couple hours a day. If it`s any consolation, I am taking tons of narcotics for generalized severe pain and it still doesn`t take the pain away. The bottom line is that "nuttin is gonna help" so we might as well keep knitting. I stop when the tears start to shrink my wool. I told my doc I will never have cancer or heart disease but will live to be 100 and in severe pain. I haven`t stopped living (well maybe temporarily at times). There are a lot of people out there that face more severe things than we do. Don`t you just love to hear that when you hands are throbbing.
Keep smiling Benne and don`t always believe those doctors. Repeat after me: We`re knitters and we keep knitting! No matter what!
All the Best....Evelyn

Amy...why don`t you order enough wool from Elann to bring you up to your $500.00 mark, whatever it takes. Then after the wedding, you can treat yourself to $50.00 worth of free yarn. Evelyn

Trying a new skill ---- not going so well.
|
Hi Amy I also got myself a drop spindle. I just got a cheap one until I get the hang of it, if I ever do. I`m like you, I need a video. I have no idea even where to begin. I thought it was made wrong because the spindle was at the wrong end so I had my DH move it to the other end. I was so embarrassed when I found out there are 2 kinds. One with the spindle near the hook and one with it at the other end.
I haven`t really given it a good try yet but I plan to after this Studio Tour is over on Dec 2. I think there is a video online somewhere...I guess you can just google it for the instructions. I had lots of roving because I do needle felting so I figured another $20.00 was worth trying it.
Good Luck with yours and let me know if you find some good instructions. Evelyn
