Knitting and Dead relatives

You have got me in the mind to create a family afghan like an antique album quilt with each square representing someone, an event, a history. I think Rod Stewart said it best,"every picture tells a story." Benne

on a lighter note, knitting on a Harley

Sidecars are a little less maneuverable and we will be riding a lot of mountain roads, but we have talked about getting one from time to time. I`ll mention this to DH. I ALWAYS wear a helmet. I also wear boots and leather chaps. I`ve seen the results of laying a bike down and I want all the protection I can get. As for the helmet, not only is it safer, if I didn`t my hair would be everywhere. It`s waistlength and I braid it but between the wind and the bugs it would be a mess. Good for your parents biking around, maybe I`ll run into them (not literally) sometime when I`m in FLA. Thanks for the suggestion. The more I think about it the more I like it. I`m already mentally customizing it for knitting. Benne

Ah, Miss Bets, several friends do pronounce it that way and it makes me feel quite exotic. I could stop and pick up your Mom and let DH take her for a motorcycle ride while I got lots of hugs from DGD.:} I don`t know about Interlacements but will consider it my undercover assignment for the trip. I DO want to come to San Antonio, I`ve never been there and somewhere I`ve never been is where I`d like to go, especially since you and Scullyknits are there. Actually, DH wants to take a trip to Texas because he wants to go to the Texas Ranger Museum, seems his Greatgrandfather was a Ranger and his guns and things are in the museum. We both like all that history stuff.Appropriate for two old fossils. Benay

sad day of rippin out

Hi Michelle, Bets and Scullyknits are right on with their suggestions. I know my gauge can change depending on the time of day, mood, or how many cups of coffe I`ve had ;} Getting consistent gauge gets easier I thinkwith experience and the really important thing is YOUR gauge. Everybody knits differently so don`t be afraid to try different needles - bamboo, metal, etc. I find I knit more tightly on circular needles. When I am very concerned about keeping gauge I recheck periodically to see if I am maintaining the gauge I want. If I find I am knitting more tightly, I just loosen up and little and go on. One of those gauge check gizmos is invaluable for a quick spot check. The main thing is - don`t stop knitting. Like anything else you want to do well, it takes a little practice to find your most comfortable rhythm and yarn tension. Don`t feel badly about ripping out. I`ll bet if you had an empty boxcar it would not be big enough to hold all the projects every single one of us have ripped out. Regarding mistakes or gauge change, as my grandmother used to say, "it`ll never be seen on a galloping horse." Knit on and have fun, Benne

Great info Christina and you lucky girl, you grew up in a very special place indeed. I`ve been to the weaving compound. What gorgeous stuff they have. A Fiesta stop just got carved in stone. If we fly into ABQ it`ll probably be on Saturday so I can go to Mass at St.Francis in Oldtown. After Mass, we head up the Turquoise Trail and wander, with a mandatory stop at Chimayo. It had occurred to me that I might not get much knitting done because I don`t want to miss anything. Of course, if we try to do it all in 3 days we`ll be going so fast I won`t be able to focus my eyes anyway.;}

Ann, You have presented a wonderful selection for all of us to dream about and knit like crazy. I would like to see the baby cashmere and silk in a slightly heavier weight. Thanks for letting us give you our wish list. Benne

hello and blocking question

Welcome Sarah, After that first Elann order, you`re a goner. We all hear that siren song.;} I`m glad to hear about your Uros cable project. I ordered LOTS of Uros and have gotten the cable bug. I defer any advice to the Cable Queens, of which there are several here, you`ve already heard from one - aren`t Marion`s sweaters beautiful? Good luck, maybe you can elist DH to help with his hat and scarf. Who knows, you might end up like Patricia with a knitting husband.:} Benne

pattern corrections and errors
|
Hi All or ya`ll depending on your location,
Yesterday I was cruising the knitting magazine and manufacturer websites and noticed the corrections and oops! categories. Checking them out, I found I had several patterns that had corrections. I wanted to remind everyone to check them out because I noticed that some of the projects had been mentioned here. Specifically, at knittinguniverse.com there are corrections to Sally Melville`s The Knit Stitch and The Purl Stitch. I sure would hate to get deep into a project and find out there was a pattern error. A real bummer especially for those of us who rip outobsessively (guilty). Hoping to save us all from that dreaded rip, rip, rip. Benne

question for ACB

Ann, I was under the impression that you prefer we not speak specically about upcoming yarn offerings, giving the name, etc. Is this correct? You have such a great website and I`m sure we all want to follow your wishes concerning the much-anticipated yarns. Don`t want to mess up a good thing! Thanks, Benne

pattern corrections and errors

Hi Judy, You are fine, the website is a pain. After getting yelled at repeatedly by the site, I even called them to try and figure it out. I was promised that they were making it easier to use, but so far it seems only marginally easier. Here`s how I found the corrections page for the books. Click on XRX Books then click on Knitter`s Help. That should bring up the corrections. To get corrections on Knitter`s Magazine click on Knitters Online and then Knitters Help. I think everyone in the biz should take a look at Elann`s site and its ease of use and shoot for that. At times, I have become so frustrated with websites where I really wanted to make a purchase that I just left and bought elsewhere. Good luck. You sure do know your way around a cable pattern. Your sweaters are fabulous. I got my Rowan magazines today and am I drooling! Benne

Yeah, but if we spill the beans ahead of time about those special treats on Tuesdays, those who don`t subscribe to the newsletter might snap up all that yummy yarn right out from under us after we give it all that good press. Horrors! ;} About those *almost* anything subjects, we`ll try to behave. :} Benne
