What about that Holiday knitting?
|
Yeah, to the hats but I want BIG projects done. If I knitted all day every day I would never complete all the things I want to make. I know, I know, one at a time but there are so many enticements. As far as DGD is concerned, for Christmas from Grammy she got knitting needles, all the cool little tools, yarn, a teach me to knit book and a bag for all of it. I have worked with her several times and she picked it up very well. BTW eileen, she is a bona fide REDHEAD! I have great expectations for her on that fact alone.lol The computer teleconference is a great idea. That`s also a great way for Tim to "get out" and visit. I don`t think I want teleconferencing. Then I`d have to brush my hair.LOL Benne

Open Letter to Fantastic Knitters (Yes, YOU)
|
Hi Fran, I read your post and thought, this site has a real impact on all of us. We all want the companionship of sharing our projects and love of knitting and those fabulous fibers, sympathy when things go awry, and most important of all, the friendship we find here. I, like you, frequently smile and laugh out loud when I read the posts. I have noticed that nearly every single one of us laments that we want to get more knitting done, more projects finished, and improve our skills. I think that is a good thing, never to be satisfied with where we are now but always wanting to be better, aspiring to greater challenges. Take pleasure in projects completed and done well but look at something new or more difficult and think "I want to try that." I want you to use your beautiful yarn and experience the pleasure of working with it. Give yourself that gift, you deserve it and you`ll like your projects more too. I wonder if you have ever thought of selling your afghans and shawls. That way you could have more money for your yarn stash. lol And your work would be used and appreciated, which is important to me after putting in so many hours to make something. I`ll search my patterns and see what I`ve got. I think you mentioned before about taking the AbFab idea of mixing yarns and using texture and color changes. The Lion Brand Yarn website has a free afghan pattern using that same idea. You could substitute some of that yarn in your stash and create something beautiful and pleasing to make. And post it here so we can all get inspired by it.:} Hugs, Benne

Les and her cheat sheet - should we post bios?
|
After reading Les`s post about her cheat sheet to keep us all straight (no,I don`t think it`s creepy, I wish I had been doing the same thing) I wondered if anyone wanted to post a short bio or info about themselves all in one place. I have tried to keep everyone and their geographical area, significant others, interests, etc. straight in my mind, but unfortunately, my mind like my body is going downhill fast.lol I`ve even considered going back and rereading the posts so I could put something together. I`ll start and if anyone else wants to add their info they can.
I live in rural Tennessee in the woods and love it. I was born (1952) and raised in east Tennessee, am Scots-Irish and Cherokee Indian heritage. And as my grandmother used to say, "as independent as a hog on ice." I`m tall, don`t wear makeup much, have long straight hair, because as DH says I look like Opie of Mayberry with short hair.lol DH and I formed a film production company years ago and work together. We have two DD`s, one his and both mine (Her mother died and I adopted his DD when she was seven. Older DD has given us two grandchildren, a son (7) and a daughter (12) both redheads! I learned to knit and do other handwork from my grandmothers. I knit sporadically through the years but have recently started knitting every day and am really trying to learn new things and improve my skills (thanks to all of you for inspiring me). I`m a football fanatic like some of the rest of you. This website full of wonderful people has enriched my life and I`m grateful for each and every one of you. Benne

Hey kids, my White Buffalo arrived!
|
DMM just brought me two BIG boxes with WB inside. I got the rust and dark rust and lilac and dark burgundy. Ann, you were right on with your color evaluation. I am so excited! Of course I had to immediately unwind the colors and put them together and knit a couple of stitches. They look fabulous together. I feel much more confident now that I see the fibers. I think I can do this thing without screwing it up and ending up spinning it on my working but antique spinning wheel. Jamie and Theresa, you will know if I succeed or not if I post a frantic message with spinning questions.lol Benne

Hey kids, my White Buffalo arrived!

Oh yeah, darling mailman Tony. You gotta love a guy who brings all those Elann boxes and calls me every time to tell me what time he`ll be here so I can meet him at my gate. My gate stays locked so instead of leaving me a slip to go to the post office which is a 20 mile round trip and one more endless day to wait, he calls me so I can get my yarn. I think that qualifies for the "darling" don`t you? lol Maybe I should make him something. I`ve already bribed him by making his wife a shawl. My own country way of greasing his palm.;} Benne

Les and her cheat sheet - should we post bios?
|
Hi Fran, Yes, that grandmother was Irish and I always took it to mean that there`s no helping a hog on ice, they gotta do it themselves and will not stop until they do. I should have mentioned in my bio that I too love to read, books and yarn are competing for the space around here. I enjoy gardening, especially herbs and roses and I am a lifelong birdwatcher. Got that from my Irish grandmother too. I have raised baby bluebirds, hummmingbirds and others that have been stranded by the death of parent birds and nursed sick hawks and ducks back to health. I guess you could say I am a nature girl. I love all needlework and sewing and have always had some needlework project going to grab and take on the road with me. Since I live on 750 acres of mature woods with a lake, creek and all kinds of wildlife, I guess you could say that makes me happy as a clam. Whatever that means! lol Benne

Happy as a clam
|
Okay, here`s my take on happy as a clam. I think it`s because a clam is totally self-contained in his world. All he has to do is sit there in his safe little shell and wait for eveything he needs to come to him. I`m still a little foggy on how new little clams get made with all that armor and generally boring lifestyle they lead. ;} Our hummers (ruby-throated and a few rufous occasionally) arrive the middle of March. I put out several large feeders totalling a couple of gallons. When the numbers are at their largest I have to refill them every day. That`s when knitting on the front porch can get hazardous. I have counted (as well as you can count a darting tiny aerial acrobat) as many as 60+ just on the front porch at one time. To give you an idea of how much they eat, DH buys 40lb bags of sugar for me at Sam`s. And I use more than one each hummer season. Now, if that had been my moonshine-making grandfather buying all that sugar, the "revnooers" (that`s federal revenue agents to those of you who have more law-abiding family members that I do, picture the "Untouchables") would have been pulling up in the yard with axes. lol I promise you I am not making any "shine." Lord knows I not going to do any cooking I don`t have to! lol Where was I? Oh yeah, hummers. The most amazing thing to me is that those tiny little birds migrate over the open ocean flying nonstop every fall. Jeez, and I think it`s a big deal to drive to town in my comfy little PT Cruiser. I`ll stop with the birds now, as my family says, don`t get her started. :} To get back to happy clams, I am thrilled everyone is posting their bios and pics. I have wanted to be able to put a face with all those great posts for a while but was too chicken (birds again!) to post my pic first. I love this group! Benne

Happy as a clam
|
Oh good, a reason to talk about one of my favorite subjects. The hummers I see in March are probably in migration. The earlier arrivals usually migrate further north so being very smart little birds that plan ahead, start their trip earlier so they can be on their breeding grounds when the courtship/mating cycle starts. Hummers return to where they were hatched to raise their families every year. How cool is that? I can`t even find my car in the Wal-Mart parking lot! So, Les, I`m just fattening them up so they can get to your house. Our hummers leave in October, though the largest numbers start in July and continue through September. By October I`ve got a few stragglers left or maybe they`re my homies just leaving late. Each year in migration hummers return to the same feeding grounds and feeder on their trip. So if you feed them this year, they`ll be back next year. I am such a nut about birds that years ago I took a correspondence course on Ornithology from Cornell U. That and extensive reading is where I picked up all these fascinating facts about one of the pluckiest (no pun intended) birds in the avian world. They have been seen attacking Bald Eagles who get too near their nests. Theresa, you might pick up some migrants and possibly a resident hummer if you put out red things in your yard and a feeder. Of course you could just end up looking like a house of ill repute.lol The hummers are definitely present in New York and since you live in a neighborhood and not Fort Apache, you could get lucky and have them find you and Timmy. I wish you could attract them, he would be constantly entertained watching their acrobatic activity. They are active sunup to dusky dark. They love petunias and red and purple flowers especially those that are trumpet-shaped. There are several perennial vines and bushes that they`re crazy about. If you want some info, let me know and I`ll e it to you. Okay girls, get those feeders ready, the bluebirds are sitting on their boxes singing and it was 79 degrees here yesterday so we`ll all be ready for the rest of that endless summer cotton soon. Benne

what colors (colours) do you wear?
|
Now that we`re getting our bios posted, my innate nosiness has me wondering what colors you all prefer to wear or like. Once again, since I am so shy, I`ll start off.;} Ecasey, you are responsible for me getting into wearing green. Even though my eyes are a kind of gray/green I never wore it because my skin is olive. Now I find myself buying green yarns. Yes, I`m STILL working on my casual cables cardigan in cactus. I find I like to wear white, black, neutral creams and khakis, red and then I get into really bright intense colors. I am not a pastel person. I just look kind of yucky in them. I`m like a little kid who picks out all the bright color crayons out of the box except with me it`s all those jewel colored yarns. Maybe I should have been a hummingbird, then I would fly to your house Theresa so you and wee Tim would have your own hummingbird. Benne

Okay, so it looks like I`m pink aluminum needles and Shetland Wool yarn. Appararently the pink aluminum needles indicate I love a good stitch and bitch in the sun (add an adult beverage if I`m really going to do this right!). Sounds pretty accurate but no way do I want to use aluminum needles- I`m a bamboo, addis, bryspun and swallow type of girl. Probably got me right on the yarn thing too. Jeez, I hate fitting into a category.;} Benne
