Well, since DMIL put the cabosh on Wren, I ain`t knitting a thing for Mother`s Day. No rancor, I am just not, so I need some ideas.

For her birthday, I found a place that delivers wine. (She lives in a dry county-you can`t buy alcohol in her town. Delivery IS a big deal.)

I am taken with the idea of a pedicure party for a bunch of senior women (the parties are all the rage in the jr. hi set) but since I don`t want anyone to bust a hip (as opposed to bust a move), I think manicures might be in order, and probably for her next birthday. Wouldn`t THAT be fun ... manicures for you and three friends? (Ok, I would want toes, but you know ...)

Which still leaves me stuck. A book on tape is sounding better and better, (Kite Runner-the book is SO much better than the movie) but if anyone has any good ideas, I`d like to hear them!

Don`t blame you about Wren, Bets. I thought you had brought her over with the sleeve length explanation, but I guess it was not gonna happen...

The manicure thing sounds like fun. We are totally book on CD or tape here - that is a good idea if you know her taste in books.

When he was a little younger Tim always gave the Grandmas and Grandpa baskets of impatiens. I always thought that was a good gift because they made flowers all summer. The plus in Texas would be that when everything else is dieing of heat and drought you could water one basket and move it into the shade. A nursery could probably set that up for you.

Just an idea.

I love the baskets of impatiens for Mother`s Day. Impatiens make me think of my mother. She picked out 3 different colors of impatiens every year, one for me, one for each of my two daughters. She put them on the ledge outside the kitchen window. She was always very pleased when she showed them to me. It`s one of my best memories of my mother.

Bets, a manicure is good. Sometimes I think we get too complicated in gift-giving when something simple and time together is most appreciated. (I still don`t get why the Wren went awry, I thought it was great.) What about tickets for a movie and dinner for her and a friend? That gets her out doing something fun. I`ll think on this.

I think I`ve found the perfect gift for my Mom...It`s the same thing I gave her at Christmas!!

I knit her a single white cotton facecloth. Take note it was only one, not 3, not a bunch...just ONE! My logic was I wanted her to beg-g-g-g for more!!

This is a woman who has returned more gifts than I can remember; she`s always talking about not wanting anything (as in, "Do me a favor and DON`T waste your money on me") The facecloth logic was that they (the facecloth...not Mothers) can`t last forever, so if she likes it, I`ll be able to give her a new one several times a year.

At first, I don`t think she was thrilled with it but sometime over the C`mas holiday she used it in her bath and is now dropping hints that she could really use another!

Clever, eh?? I`m in like Flynn...!

Bets: the two hanks of wool in the woods kid mohair you gave me has infinite length. I made a luna moth scarf out of one hank, half hank for a garter block scarf and I still have half hank left for something. The garter block scarf is knitted alternatively between debbie bliss pure cashmere and wool in the woods kid mohair. I just finished it and blocking. I think I will pack one of them for my mother.

SK-

I can`t WAIT til my printed material gets here-then you will have other things to show your mother. Tell her I said Ni Hao.

All-in the hubbub of Christmas, she did not grasp that Wren was 3/4 sleeve-she thought they were just too short. (She`s 5`1"-that had to be a novelty.) I`ve given DMIL all kinds of plants for presents-hadn`t thought about the impatiens.

Holy Cow! I can`t believe it`s coming up so soon. I`m thinking a pound of Peet`s, a box of See`s and a nice bottle of red.

LOL! I think it would suit the both of us. They opened a See`s within walking distance of my house--now that`s dangerous!

Billie- See`s is candy (my DH`s fave) and Peets is coffee.

No clue about Mother`s Day. I`m leaning towards having some of my best photos framed and sending those, but then what would I do for birthdays this year?!?!

Billie-Peet`s gave Starbucks the idea. Mr. Peet died last year. The coffee world mourned.

I could do that combination (Peet`s, See`s, & Wine) for myself. :-) Love Peet`s, and am glad I found two Peet`s stores in Sunnyvale/Cupertino, where I can also get my dose of Schaffenberger (chocolate; since I can no longer walk over to the Ferry Building in SF). I used to live somewhat within walking distance of See`s, now I have to drive to Valley Fair shopping center. Miss M has finally figured out what store that is, that memory of hers is not working to my advantage, lol.

The mani/pedi idea sounds nice, unfortunately it`s not really my MIL`s thing. My MIL doesn`t do coffee or wine, but the chocolates would work. I don`t know what to do about my Mom though, she`s a tough one.

Clever! If you want to change to an upscale cloth, get a skein of the Pakucho - it is amazingly softer than regular Sugar/Peaches & Cream.

Your mom wants a booking at a photographer`s with her and the grands. So she can brag to all her friends.

Yes/no??

Bets....I would definately stay away from the Pedicure for any senior. Foot care for a senior is a very special thing. It`s more like health care than the fun spa stuff the younger girls like. Around here you have to be certified to do a Senior`s feet because of the prevalence of diabetes etc. And, how many Seniors do you see with bare feet?......or is that just for those of us up north with cold feet.

We had a birthday party for my MIL last week when she turned 96. Someone brought her a great gift. It was a big pile of greeting cards for all different occasions. MIL loves to keep in touch with her friends and to send cards to grandchildren etc. but is unable to get out shopping for the cards. The Giftee added some pretty stamps and some flower stickers for the envelopes and made her very happy.

If you are lucky enough to live near her, (or not) I bet she would like the gift of your time to take her places like seeing all the Spring flowers etc. Those kinds of gifts are priceless.
Let us know what you finally decide to get her.

Heck, I didn`t even think about diabetes, Evelyn, I was just thinking about those stupid paper shuffle sandals they have you wear. That creates too many slipping opportunities...we see a lot more sandals down here than you do up there.

I might have to take my DMIL to a winery, is that what you are telling me? She would LOVE that. No foolin`. Course DH would want to come. That means I get to drive, because I am so unspeakably lucky about that stuff. ;-)

Up in Wine Country here, you can hire a driver to take you around to the various wineries while everyone in your party can enjoy in wine tasting without having to worry about driving. Perhaps you have something like that over in your area?
