I could not understand exactly how needle felting worked so I decided I had to try it out. I ordered the kit from elann with the needles,foam block and roving. Then I set about trying not to end up in the emergency room with those sharp little needles. So far, so good. I needle-felted! And it is so cool and easy, I am stoked! I can see all kinds of embellishment possibilities with this method. Not only that, it`s instant gratification - my kind of fun. ;-}

Thats awesome Benne! I was at JoAnn`s a while back and they have entire machine dedicated to felting. I thougt it was kind of lame and a waste of money as all it was is a sewing machine that you dont thread at all and instead of a traditional needle it has a needle attachment that has a bunch of sharp needles. It goes up and down a million times and felts your stuff that way! I don`t see why they can`t just sell the felting needle attachment with the different shank options to be used on a traditional sewing machine. that would be too easy I guess, That and they would not be able to sell an entire machine and make more money.

I haven`t tried that yet! It DOES keep whispering to me, though... and now that you mention the "instant" part...
Hey, post some pics when you can!

Oh yes, Major instant gratification. i needle felted teh notes on Bets bags and it was one those moments that truly impressed DH. He kept saying, You KNOW the woman who designed this? Really? I walked around for a few days thinking about all the things I could stick needles into and barely controlled myself from attacking anything which could handle embellishment. I think it would be really cool to use on the Fiber Trends Clogs/slippers pattern.

Benne,
I`m so glad you liked the process and it did not harm you in any way! I have been intrigued by needle felting projects I have seen posted here but haven`t had the time to pursue learning the technique. patw

Don`t you love learning something new. Whatever it is! And on my list of cool things to learn that is right up near the top.

Daryl, you`re right! I walked around last night eying things to embellish. ;-} Ladies, I`m sure there is more complicated needle-felting going on out there, but for what I did, the learning curve is minimal. Try it! I think you`ll really like the results and possibilities. Collars on sweaters, sleeve cuffs, down the front of a jacket...my head is spinning. ;-}

Benne, I needle felted the 2 pr of Arwen`s Felted Elf Boots I knit a few years ago. After those, tho`, I bought myself a felting needle thingy that holds 4-8 needles in it at one time so you can felt that much faster, covering more ground. Clover makes them. BTW needle felting also makes great repairs on worn down areas in felted slippers.

Thanks, Joan. I remember those Arwen boots. They were awesome. I`ll check out those needles. That`s a great idea about mending slippers.

I took a class on needle felting last year and it was a waste of my time and money. I already knew more than the teacher after just doing a few projects. It is so so easy and I don`t think the needles are dangerous. I have a couple of those holders for 6 needles but I find I have more control just holding one at a time. They do get dull though and really affect your felting. Make sure you try all the needle sizes that do different things. Also, I have tried felting other materials, like the Angel fibers that you seal together with heat. That didn`t work too good. Other things don`t felt as well as yarn does. I am having a great time with it and others look at it and can`t figure out how I did it and I think that`s hillarious. My daughter has used a purse I made her two years ago with needle felting on it and it hasn`t even suggested it might be thinking of coming out. That`s the question everyone asks.
Bets, it is so much fun. How did you get so lucky to have a friend who sends you all these neat things just `cause you say you like it? I want her as a friend too.
How about putting up some pictures of the needle felting. Evelyn

Evelyn, I am not at all surprised that you were light years ahead of the instructor and class. :-} I think Bets will be fine at needle felting if she doesn`t drink too much coffee first. HA!
I am very fortunate, SK is a very generous friend. :-}
