I have not done this. Howeve, Iam considering doing htis on purpose to make some hot pads. Have any of you done this, and if so, what do you have to say about it?

Well, I`m not sure this counts but recently I machine washed one of my lace swatches by mistake. It was Zephyr (merino/silk). It looked awful. In fact, the swatch was for a lace scarf I am making for someone and I thought about giving her the swatch and telling her that this is what the scarf will look like if it finds its way into the wash!
Seriously though, if you were to do Moose Lace with large needles and heavier yarn it might look really nice. With so many other things in knitting I think you probably have to experiment to see if you can get the results you want.

YES! I HAVE done this!!! Oh boy, have I done this!!! Threw a load of jeans, sweatshirts, hoodie-things, polar fleece coats, etc. into the washing machine on hot and heavy. Yup. In too much of a hurry to check the pockets, never mind what was possibly stuffed inside the legs and arms of other garments.
Some lovely 100% wool lace ponchos got felted.
And it isn`t the first time I`ve done this! (You`d think i would`ve learned by now... but no.)
How do they come out? Stiff as a mat, but lace patterns still visible.
Good for hot pads? Heck, yea.
Good for rugs? Probably.
Good for what else? Let`s see... making baskets, winter-hurraches, bench-warmer-butt-mats for Benne to bring to the game (never mind, I hear she never sits down anyway), log-carriers for firewood... we could go on, but let`s not.
Good idea for leftover mini-balls of yarn!

Funny you should mention this T. I am in the process of doing just that. Although, I don`t think my lace is anything like what you are talking about. I have knit a white purse and I`m putting a lacy flap on the front of it. It`s just some crocheted chain like thingies that make up a trangular piece for the front. I`ll post the picture if it turns out. First I had to learn to crochet so you know how entailed the pattern might be. Very simple. Evelyn

T: it will be beautiful but the lacy holes might burn your finger. SK
