I currently have mine in a tote bag that I got for free at a tradeshow. It has lots of pockets. I think though that I would like something that looks a little more stylish in the living room.

I always have quite a few WIPs going at once. Right this minute, I have a charity shawl, crochet legwarmers for a friend, a stole for me, a charity crochet lapghan, and swatches for my first socks, all with some work done on them this week. I use baskets (thrift shops often have very nice ones!) for WIPs with more bulk or lots of skeins; other projects go into the clear, zipped cases that linens sometimes come in (Patternworks also sells these cases); smaller projects can go in movable-zipper plastic food-storage bags, either the gallon or the 2.5 gallon size; and the smallest WIPs can fit into even the bags that Elann puts around their invoices. WIPs which haven`t been worked on in a while and so have become UFOs, get a tote or a plastic bag and then most of them go into a wicker chest.

I have a lot of tote bags (DH calls me "the Imelda Marcos of tote bags"! lol!), and I have one major gadget bag by my chair plus two smaller ones which live in my present favorite totes. So when I`m going out, I can grab a tote and stuff in a WIP, all in its bag, that`s appropriate to the time I`m likely to have to knit or crochet.

Kim, can I be reading correctly, you only have ONE WIP? Oh woman of strength and resolution, I am so impressed. I have needles and yarn in my purse for the second try at the sleeve of the sweater that will not die. They refuse to stay in their bag in my purse, but spill out tempting me while at work. I have my black alpaca Cozy which outgrew the purse in a black cotton bag I made when DD#2 was doing Tangrams in first grade, Tangram Cat appliqued on front. Then there are various baskets and bags all over the house with various stages of balls of yarn, needles and copied patterns (so I don`t lose the original). Never know when there will be a phone call or a few minutes delay. Daryl

No, I have 3. 2 are shoved into the tote and the 3rd is in my nightstand. I keep the socks up there and work a few rows at night before bed.

Kim,

Good question,

I have my WIP in a basket that is beside the couch. I got it at an art fair and its cute but functional. It currently has in it a cardigan that is barly started (the back and 1 front panel is complete), a sock which needs a mate, and my teddy bear which is 90% complete. In the basement is where the bond is located and the WIP for that is located in a basket next to it with the yarn needed for the project. The basket upstairs also holds the needles as well. Also I only pull out enough yarn to get started and then add to it when its all used up because i just dont have enough room for it plus all of the other things in the basket.

I`m with Daryl, WIPs are everywhere. Beside me by my computer is a striped t-shirt, side to side, in cotton from stash- mindless knitting; on the otherside is is a not-so-warm Einstein in silk and something - mindless; behind that is a plastic bag with a 3/4 complete tunic in Tropicana - not mindless; on the floor in an elann box is the celtic cardigan in Uros that I did not finish for last year`s retreat - not mindless; and then there`s downstairs - sock bag in the hallway, ready to grab as I go out of the door (bag also includes battery light for the ferry, knitting magazines, book of street maps for Victoria, and at the moment the two cell phone chargers which the boys forgot on the weekend to be delivered to one of them on Thursday); samples of cables for the retreats in the living room - have to concentrate so that I can teach them; and so on it goes. Somewhere there are two Dorcas sweaters that people had trouble with that I haven`t even looked at yet.

It`s just too boring to be too organized. We won`t even mention the pile of things waiting to be steamed and blocked. DS is going to take some pictures of the house for a show album, and asked very tactfully if I thought I could consolidate!

Kim, I`m in Alice`s camp--I have WIP in several places but mostly either in my tote bag (I always take a knitting project with for whatever activity--don`t always work on it) or on the table in my "loom" room, or on the sofa waiting to be noticed and worked on. In other words my house in a bit of a fiber mess where I can usually find something to work on no matter where I am. I have about 4 wips right now. Jamie

Each project has its own tote bag - either freebies for joining an organization or purchased in support of a worthy cause. The actual piece being knitted is in a ziplock bag (size variable) in the tote bag along with balls of yarn, copy of pattern, extra needles if necessary. I keep my basic accessories in what I think was a cosmetics bag - tapestry needle, scissors, stitch holders, etc. That and my knitting needles have their own tote bag.
My carry along project is in a ziplock in my purse which is a small, longhandled canvas bag from L.L. Beans.
Now that I am going to be teaching knitting I am thinking of making a big felted bag for carrying to class.
You can really use anything for a knitting bag. I know people who use soft briefcases & very cool handbags.

I`m in the Alice/Daryl camp. I`ve got WIPS everywhere. I have baskets, ziplocks for the grab it on the way out the doors projects, freebie tote bags, clear heavy plastic tote bag for flying, etc. The coolest yarn storage thing I have is a clear square plastic bin about the size of one of those little personal coolers. It has handles and an attached hinged lid. The best part? This is what the Milk Bone type dog treats come in (from Sam`s) and I snarf them up for yarn. I won`t tell you how many I have stacked up full of yarn and WIPS but Max and Belle get a lot of these treats. ;-} They`re also great to grab for a transportable WIP.

I have 2 of those Rubbermaid plastic chests of drawers with 3 drawers in each (one is a wide chest, one is narrow). I keep my WIPs in these - the wide one is in the hall closet, and the narrow one serves as a VERY upmarket telephone table beside the computer, LOL. I have also been known to keep one or two projects in the end table cupboard at my side of the sofa - out of sight, but accessible in nanoseconds!

I keep my yarn in the original white boxes it somes in - stacked in the closet where the boiler/furnace is, with the end that shows marked with what the yarn is in black permanent marker.

I keep my magazines in sturdy cardboard mag files from Ikea - you get 5 of them for $2.99 (for the coloured ones) or $2.49 (for the plain white ones). Sorted!

Eileen.

The top down sweater is in a huge plastic bowl that was my Mom`s. It is that 50`s pink :-D Everything else are either in zip bags on totes. I got a bunch of really nice big tote bags at AC Moores for 5.00 each. Nice tapestry with pockets. They look like luggage and DH doesn`t seem to mind them as much as open clutter. Poor man, this place has never been run like a ship.

I am something of a bag-o-holic, and start a lot of stuff that never gets finished, so I have WIP`s in:
A bunch of those AC Moore bags suzann mentioned
plastic ziploc bags
The baby tapestry bags also sold by AC Moore

AND I have the following which sometimes hold wips
A big round bag with pockets I bought at a county fair
a plastic hinged box from the craft store
a little lunch-bag sized thing I made for myself
weird little bags I got at the Indian 99 cent store
etc, etc....
DH grabs everything and shoves it into whatever bag he first runs across, so I spend a lot of time untangling things....
