Okay, so I went through the whole explanation about Salt Spring Island with Thom for my fall trip. Cool, he said, go and have fun. Do you want to go, I ask, you could go fishing, exploring, etc. No, he wasn`t interested in going. Well, tonight I say, I think I`ll start getting my things in order for the trip. I know I don`t need a passport but mine`s expired and I need to get it renewed anyway. He says to me,in an incredulous tone of voice, you don`t need a passport to go to Iowa. IOWA!!!!! He thought I was going to Iowa! HAHAHAHA!!!!!!! THEN, he finds out, What! British Columbia in the fall! What, an island! Well, maybe he thinks that`s a pretty nice place to visit in the fall and maybe he is interested after all. MEN!!! Benne

Au contraire - I think they do absord what we say... in small amounts... by osmosis. Otherwise we wouldn`t have a new "Knitter`s Eye For The Straight Guy" section! My DH has been astounding me recently with his knowledge of fibres and matching yarn gauges to patterns.
You don`t need a passport to go to Canada? Really?! When my Mum came to visit relatives in Canada I made her come across the border and meet us in Buffalo because I thought I would need my passport to cross the border????
Eileen.

Oh, Benne, that`s too funny and had me snorting and sputtering and the family running to my aid! He could have a lot of fun out in BC! (Iowa?) I just got a call saying I have won a kitchy little eyeglasses case that looks like a handbag -in brown aligator patent leather! This afternoon I went to a home party in the city with a number of vendors. Purses, jewellry, eyeglasses etc. It was in support of breastcancer as the hostesses husband just beat breast cancer!! (have your hubby`s get a mammogram!! - likely, eh?) Les

Eileen, In your case I wouldn`t risk it. The problem wouldn`t be getting into Canada but when you came back. Sometimes you just get waved through but other times you get stopped, asked where you were born, checked out in some way. I had a friend who was a US citizen who happened to have been born in Singapore. She just said Cleveland or Detroit when asked because it was so much hassle otherwise. Have you seen that wonderful movie *In America*? There is a great scene at the beginning when the Irish family is crossing into the US from Canada. Cate

Men are amazing... mine can`t remember what clothes he owns but he can remember everything in my closet and know when something is new!
Pre 9/11 Americans and Canadians could cross over into each other`s country with only a driver`s licence if you were going by car. Especially those of us who grew up on the border or near it. It was likely one of the agents would know you or someone in your family. Now I wouldn`t chance it and would take more than my license. Flying has always beena little different however when I was a flight attendant the agents let me through wiht a paring knife and an apple just because they saw me 3x a week.

Eileen, American citizens did not used to need a passport to enter Canada and re-enter the US. As everyone said, getting back into America without a passport might be trickier now. I remember reading a story in the news about this the other day and people getting detained at the border. Gosh, if I went to Canada and couldn`t get back to the US, just think how many people I know in Canada. HA!
Les, I`ve already told Thom he can`t stay at the girly compound and cramp our style for running around and being comfortable in our jammies. He said he would spend my knitting week either fishing or maybe hunting somewhere and meet me at the end of my knitting week on Salt Spring. I think he really means to come, we`ll see. Or maybe he meant I was going to Salt Spring and he was going to Iowa. HA! Benne

Hi - Bits and Pieces re SSI Partners are welcome to come to Salt Spring. Could stay at my house and join us for meals at the farm - I`m only cooking in one place. Could stay at Ruckle Park on the edge of the ocean at the SOUTH end of the island - I have a good-sized 2-roomed nylon tent - the children and I used to go camping with it when they were MUCH younger (now 23 and 25). DHs could do a guy thing for about $15CDN a night per campsite in the park. Tent has a water-proof fly that goes over the top - someone needs to be over 5`6" with reasonablly long arms to get it on (first time DS and I did it, in the pouring rain, both of us at 5`3" had a dreadful time, but when he reached 6` it was a cinch). Also, many places up and down the coast, cabins, lodges, etc. Or take the BC Ferry to Prince Rupert, and then the Alaska State ferry to points farther north - an Alaskan cruise at a fraction of the cost! Maybe you want to go too and Knit!
PASSPORTS - if you are American born or a US citizen, you should have TWO pieces of photo ID to get into Canada. We can get into the US with the same, or often less. Just check to see what you need to get home again. Other citizenship, bring your passport.
Naomi, if you read this, perhaps you could add.
Buy travelling health insurance, it can cost you as little as $15 and then you don`t have to worry.
Start gathering the knitting you are going to bring.

Thanks for the info, Alice. Isn`t if funny that the thing I thought of first was what knitting to bring with me. I`ve packed and repacked my knitting mentally at least ten times and I`ve got several months to go. :-} Benne
