Thanks for asking at the alpaca farm for the pattern. I have determined that the lace panels are "Diamond Panel", which I found in a knitting stitch book MIL gave me (The Harmony Guide to Knitting Stitches,1983).
They knit a couple of rows after the panels and then began the decreases for the crown. (one row of 10 decreases, then knit 10 rows without decreases, then decreases in ernest!) I think that I should be able to mimic it - once I buy the alpaca! If you`re interested, I`ll can give more detail.

Have a look at the hat in Family Circle Easy Knitting - Holiday 2004, #26 on page 62. Pattern is "Shadow Triangles" from Harmony Guide, #3. Different lower edge, but very similar shape to the one you bought. "Diamond Panel" should work up just fine. This should be good!

Thanks, Alice, shape`s the same but my SP Island one is prettier!! That looks like a great issue - I looked at the on-line preview. http://www.fceasyknitting.com/magazine/preview.html
There`s even a couple of items for the Bond girls, eh?! (clicked on "table of contents")
I hope to get out to the Alpaca farm next week..... I just have to call ahead to make sure the owner`s there.

Les,

You sure got my attention with the Bond Girls comment! This looks like a good issue. Be sure and post pics of your hat and how you did it, please, please.

You bet I will!! I`m dying to try it, now that I`ve found which lace panel it is! I wonder if I have some equivalent wt. yarn to try it before I get the alpaca!!

I was just thinking about you, Benne, a few minutes ago as we were eating our bacon at breakfast and discussing "Zuckermann`s Famous Pig" and wondering where Charlotte`s babies got to when they blew away!
