Hi Heather,
As far as I can tell, that`s just the regular way to purl in continental style.... If the yarn is thrown around the needle in the opposite direction, the stitch will be twisted (and can be corrected on the next row by knitting through the backs of the stitches -- knitting this way is "combination knitting"). Have you tried it? It`s awkward for the first while, but you just have to keep a stiff upper lip until it feels more natural. :-)

i agree with Bea in that it looks like the regular way to purl in the continental style of knitting but disagree with her in that the stitch will be twisted when you are ready to knit the other side. If you throw the yarn over the needle ( I think this is what the website directed you to do), you set the direction of the stitching up for the regular knit stitch. If you throw the yarn under the needle, you have a reversed the direction of the stitch and will have to either twist it correctly when its time to knit or knit through the back loop which ever is easier for you.
I knit conintental style as it is easier for me. Then later I realized that all of my shaping stitches were going in the opposite direction and then had the re-evaluate my knitting and found out why! I was knittign through the back loops instead of the front causing the "K2tog" to be shaped funny. anyway I figured it out.

Heather this is how I`ve always purled and then I knit through the back loop. This is how I was taught by my mother. I have just recently begun to purl the other way and it is very difficult for me, but it is getting easier although now I have to think before I purl while in the past I just did it. It is nice for me know that it has a name. Thanks for posting.

I haven`t tried it yet. I`m on two spinning lists and someone pointed this out, provided a link. I just thought someone here might find it interesting. My use of the continental purl is minimal, so I didn`t recognize it straight off.
I`ve heard quite a few people mention lately knitting backwards. I`ve not tried this before, that I`m aware of. I`ll have to research this and check that out too.

Oh, I think my run-on sentences weren`t clear -- sorry! :-) I meant the same thing as what Libby said -- the pictures show the REGULAR way to do continental purl, but if you throw the yarn the OPPOSITE way from what`s shown on that site, that makes a twisted stitch.

That`s how I purl - at least the instructions on that site under `Another set of instructions` is how I do it. I keep the yarn BEHIND the left needle (right dominant), which, I think, saves step #4 in the instructions with pictures.
It seems awkward at first, but becomes very quick. My stitches are never twisted - front of stitch is always presented on the next row.

I just found directions for knitting backward. So I think I`ll play with that for a little while. It`s interesting.
