I have dyed the shawl I`ve been working on. I also dyed hanks of yarn to do the fringe. It is an 8 ply cotton and I wonder if the fringe is going to look too ragged after washing etc. It tends to unravel. Should I accept that as a design feature or should I try long loops somehow? Any ideas or experience? Thanks! Les

Hey Les,
I don`t have a great deal of experience with fringe, but would it be possible to tie knots in the ends. I know a lot of work but maybe it wouldn`t look so ragged. Heck maybe even add a bead to the ends. Make it sparkly!! Heather

That`s what I did to my last fringe - tie a knot.

If you have the patience of a saint, you can cut the finge more than twice as long as you want it, twist it till it folds back on itself, and then knot it back at the end by the knitting. There are little do-dads available from Halcyon Yarn to help one in this heroic endeavor - they look like alligator clips on wires, passed through a little block of wood...

Thanks ladies! I feel like MacChick, tho. Last night I had my son (?!) try it on for me to see it from afar and I didn`t like the hang of it after the yarn had shrunk during the dying process. The st. I used was now too firm in the gauge i used. So, yup, I frogged the whole darn thing!! have restarted in a garter st.(nice and loose) triangle shawl and I like it!! so, will have to file the fringe suggestions for a while. Les

Oh boy, the frogging blight strikes again! I think you must have a very nice son if he modeled your shawl for you. Hey, he`s got his priorities in order. lol I also think it`s a hoot that he mows the grass at 9:30PM like you told me the other day.
Well, the upside of all that frogging is, you`re gonna love the shawl and wear it and if you hadn`t frogged it, it would have just sat in the closet unworn. Les, have you ever seen the fringe that takes half the yarn strands in one fringe and is knotted with half the yarn strands in the next set of fringe. It looks really neat. I`ll try and find a pic to email you. Benne
