I`m way ahead of myself here but I`ve been thinking about ways to use those wonderful leftovers from the Peruvian yarns I know I`ll have just as soon as I get really busy knitting. I also have been kicking around ways to use the sample skeins. There is a neat free pattern for a felted purse/bag at angelhairyarn.com. It is the LYS in Nashville and I`ve seen examples of these bags at the shop. They are beautiful and easy to make. I`m thinking about combining my nice wools and the same weight wools from the sample skeins and making a bag. I`ve also been looking at a simple vest pattern that would be really pretty with even a row of two of the sample skeins mixed with the Peruvian. Kind of a riot of color and texture. What do you think? Anyone else have any ideas? I`d be willing to trade colors of the sample skeins with someone if I had a color they wanted for a specific project. This could require intensive cataloging of exactly what colors I have. Yeah, like I shouldn`t be cleaning instead of cataloging yarn samples. lol Comments anyone? Benne

You`ll laugh Benne, but I`ve been kicking about ideas like this for years now, as my nature is to never waste anything, and I think that patchwork knitting is so very beautiful. Consequently, Elann has literally thousands and thousands of beautiful 10 yard skeins that we`ve made up from newsletter yarn leftovers dating back over the years. We`ve even got them all sorted into color groups - huge boxfulls of each group, a riot of color and texture, with almost every fibre type imaginable. If you click "Products" and then "Samples", you`ll see the whites/naturals on the left frame graphic, and the some peaches/pinks in the graphic for the sample skeins subscriptions. I`ve been thinking of offering them at the website one day in one-color-group batches of about 1/2 pound (approx. 50 skeins) per bag.

I laughed Ann, but I thought it was great. I am envisioning all those boxes now. Maybe you can poll everyone here and see what they think. I think 1/2 pound lots is a great idea and can just imagine how much fun we would have going through them to see what we got. Creativity would run rampant! Benne

Ann, I think the 1/2 lb lots sounds great! I`ve saved (I think) nearly every one of my samples (I have a large basket overflowing with them!)and I`ve always thought eventually I`ll do something with them. Maybe I just need a lil push (plus some more samples) before I settle on just one idea for them.

Ann:
The 1/2lb bag idea sounds wonderful! There`s nothing that quite matches the fun to be had from a pile of colour and texture that is yarn.
As for other leftover yarn uses: I recently went on a tapestry course, and was the envy of my classmates for the myriad different yarns I had access to - certainly more colourful and textured than plain ol` tapestry wool!
Benne: My local yarn store has this motto - and I think I pretty much live by it ;) "knitting forever... housework whenever!"

Sally MElville, I say! She has a marvelous book that came out before the Knit Stitch and Purl Stitch - Sally Melville Styles, and it has 5 or 6 totally different ways to use delicious little bits, and none of them end up looking like you were trying to be thrifty... I`ve made small son a sweater out of blues in her Tweed Squares, and Socks in the pattern form Caddy`s cardigan, and am planning to do more. I would LOVE a box of little bits...what a thrill! I always love my stocking stuffers best at Christmas time!

The book is available from this site, as well as your favorite books for less places.

to think Benne... we could have been at Angelhair at the same time. I visited many times from Ft. Campbell!

What a great idea! I`d love to have lots of little bits to use here and there. Not to mention that with two little ones they are always needing things for art projects. I could buy them a bag of their own - so that they stay out of my stash! lol!

Ann, I`m with the group...great idea! However, for those of us who are fiber-ly (is that some word or what?) challenged and can`t tell wool from wool blend from anything but pure cotton, would there be any way to tell which fibers in the bag shouldn`t be put together for some reason(i.e., MUST be dry cleaned, or MUST be washed, etc.)? If and when you do have a "bag" sale, be prepared for a "feeding frenzy" here, I think, as I will be sharpening my teeth in anticipation! And please let us know in plenty of time to get ready!!! :-) Fran

Oh, I wish we could have met! Maybe you`ll get sent to Fort Drum and I`ll be able to get together with you, Theresa, and Eileen and anyone else in the vicinity. If you get sent back to Ft. Campbell we can meet at Angelhair in our matching cactus casual cables. :} Benne

It`d be great to meet up where ever! We would actually love to go back to Campbell. We loved TN and Ky. We love to go camping and it was perfect for that.
Any chance you`re making a trip to Europe in the next couple of years? Anyone?
I got a couple more inches done on the Casual Cables tonight. The Hues in Horizontal will get blocked in the morning so I`ll post a picture then.
Peace all, Jean Ansbach, Germany

Okay Eileen, either knock it off or come to our houses and clean them too! Just when I was ready to get a tatto like that sign Knitnut mentioned that says, "knit forever, housework whenever," you`ve got me feeling guilty. lol Benne
