Sorry, I exaggerated, it`s a satsuma, they are a little more hardy. The tree is only 5 years old, and there are only a half dozen fruit on it.

I would give anything for it to be cool enough to grow lilacs, hyacinths, and a host of other plants. I would like for us to have 30 days at 30 degrees-so we could kill some fleas, some scorpions and some fire ants. I LIKE to store party beverages on the back porch when I have people over-that doesn`t work here. And I REALLY miss going to the grocery at lunch, and leaving meat in the car all afternoon while I am at work because it has NO chance of thawing.

There are hidden blessings to really cold weather.

Shui Kuen,

That`s the trouble-they are all very nice!!! I think the Bradford is similar to colors that you seem to prefer-it`s serene and earthy. The Oxford color is still very grown-up and sophisticated, but with a little more variety. Wine would be very good for anyone in your family (or mine, for that matter). The thing that makes it tough is that all the colors are very Asian-friendly!

Another thing I have noticed is that most of the color combinations are similar to classic plaids-it would not surprise me if someone owned a pair of plaid trousers or a skirt that coordinated exactly with these colors. It is strictly personal preference!

What to choose, what to choose? I have managed to talk myself out of them-it is 60 degrees out today, our winter is just about over.

B

Shui Kuen-

I know you have some hand-dyed merino (because I dyed it myself!) I was thinking about that last night-I thought "She doesn`t have to order any yarn, she could use that!" 400 yards-which I think is the amount I sent-should finish at least 7 motifs.

I was not brave-I was at 7 repeats and was considering whether I had enough to finish another repeat AND the edging. So I chose the short route. The edging instructions are a little vague, but it seems to be going ok. I have about 6 more rows before I finish. Perhaps Mark will model this!

I find that knitting with VERY thick yarn, like WB, gets a little hard on the hands-you may want to switch weights off and on.

B

Hi!

Shui Kuen, I looked in my photos, I think I deleted the photo of Mark before the sweater was fulled. I knit it on the Bond. I remember that I sent you a pattern (I didn`t save it!) for it in an incorrect gauge-the rows per 4" were calculated wrong, which made the sweater MILES too big, and then I fulled it. It REALLY pulls up in length when you full it. Check your correspondence from me sometime around November 30th.

I think if you plan to do this, it would be best to select a sweater pattern from the 80s, when everything was MILES too big (make sure the armhole is REALLY deep) and then go from there.

It is really a lovely fulled fabric-like Austrian boiled wool. Perhaps if you experiment on mittens you can get a good idea of how it behaves? I promise the mittens will be WONDERFUL---just make them 1 1/2" too long before the oversized thumb, and 2" too long after the thumb.

I will double check to see if I saved the pattern ANYWHERE, then I can at least tell you the gauge I used.

Bets

Hi Bets:
I am cleaning and organizing my yarn the other day. I found a beautiful birthday letter from you. I reread that and appreciate the art work you did to that yarn. I should really get that WIP out of the box and finish that shawl.
Second question: how is your bag wool sweater behave? What size needle did you use? I was thinking to use size 10.5, will that make it easy to pill? I washed the swatch and drying it right now, see how it will shrink. So far, the swatch is fuzz but not pill, looks good. I want to make a cable sweater from Rebecca.
I got 8 skein of optik which Benne ordered that for me. No idea what to do with it. Should that be a sweater with mohair or should that be a wrap, or should that be a scarf? What do you think? Both Benne and you always gave me good advices. Now,it seems that Benne is away. Did you get any of that? And what did you do with it?
Did I tell you that the modified starfish poncho is done, it drapes very well. I didn`t get a chance to block it.It looks like a silvery spider web.
Playing SC cotton this morning also, thinking a sunfish like Sandra`s. The swatch is drying now.
Shui Kuen

My ex BIL visited yesterday and commented that I had more yarn in one place than he had ever seen. No one doubts what my interests are when they visit my house, but I am happy not to have "serious" addictions which indeed hurt ourselves and those around us. Your knitted work is so absolutely gorgeous. Please enjoy buying and having some smooth, warm yarn with which you will create beautiful projects. I loved reading that you think of those you are knitting for while you make them knitting items. I have few people to knit for, but that is also so for me when I used to knit more for my DDs and older brother and his wife. Happy knitting, Jamie

Shui Kuen,

If Bets is like I am, she cannot wait to see what wondrous things you make with your alpaca. Your knitting is absolutely breathtaking and my guess is that your jam is beautiful too. The thoughts of it are making me hungry. :-} Your talents are many and you inspire me with all you do. I know what you mean about the old days, we had so little but were still happy. I found some skeins of old yarn I bought in those days recently and it came from a discount store, an awful acrylic and it cost $1.77 for 400 yards. I used it for lots of things and didn`t know any different, just happy to be knitting and making things for those I loved. BB gets special praise for loving and wearing his vest, and wanting to give you the things you could not have before. He`s a treasure and so is my Thom. We are indeed fortunate that we have mates who want to buy us the things that bring us joy and that we couldn`t afford in earlier times. And you`re right, a night on the town costs a lot more than good yarn and then it`s gone but our yarn and projects are still around. And there`s no hangover from knitting! lol

So, I add to my list of good things, getting to know you and seeing your knitting and animals. And many thanks to Ann for having this place we can all meet and share our love of knitting and life.
Benne

Bets: I was not born rich. In the early days, I was a poor student and a poor part time worker, was paid one dollar and sixty cents an hour at the university library ...., I was knitting some sort of itchy scratch from garage sale. The pieces I did I still have it and displaying it in my living room. I was happily knitting at those old days, no complain. Now, I am getting old, retired, and DH willing to let me buy whatever I want, so.....
I also remember when I first moved to Canada, I had no friends, I had no yarn, not many needles, not too much knitting experience, an old lady weaver sold me some weaving yarn, I happily made a multicolor vest for my husband - see my bio, with 15 balls of yarn in a mess tangle. It was an itch one also, my DH still proudly wears it very often.
I am so thankful for the internet, I can get things that I was unable to get or not affordable in that old day.
I am so thankful that I can chat here.
Bets, I work hard also, I garden, I weed, I pick berries, I made jam, I feed fish, I clean house, in the winter I help firewood. I pick up my knitting needles while taking a break. If I knit a vest for my mother, I am thinking about my mother. When I am knitting a vest for my sister-in-law, I am thinking about her......Yarn is just my hobby, not very expensive if you compare it with smoking or drinking.
Bets, please don`t send me to the shrink.
Shui Kuen

Hi Shui Kuen,

Do you know if you want cables or lace in this sweater? Give me an idea of what you want for this sweater!

I got SOOOO lucky on my Outback Mohair-I bought the Bayou color, the pretty dark green, and I have some glossy gold rayon mix to go with it. The big deal about that is that I found a pair of pants that EXACTLY coordinate with the yarn in my mother-in-law`s size, by a manufacturer she likes. This must be destiny!

Have you posted your mother`s vest to her? Does she live far?

Betsy

Bets:The only magazine I subscribe is Knitter`s. I started getting the magazine and pattern books since 2000. Now, I make a point, each time I order some yarn, I will order a book or two. So far,my collection is very limited. 1)B. Walker`s treasury one and two + top down.
2)Beverly Galeskas`s felted knits + fiber trends`s felted clog and felted baret. 3) Mary Thomas`s knitting book and knitting pattern. 4)Arans and Celtic by knitter`s. 5)The harmony guide of Aran and fair isle knitting 6)debbie bliss`s celtic knits and learn to knit . 7) some reference book, like big book of knitting. 8) Meg`s knitting. and some old booklets. Yesterday, I rec`d pingouin 20, 22A and spring leaflet.
All together, I have only one box of books and Magazine.
Bets, I am looking forward to see your magic grid and your silk sweater. I love magic grid, it is so pretty, isn`t it?
Shui Kuen

Hi!

Oh, you are right-there isn`t a breath of itch in that yarn. It would be a beautiful blanket, but it`s far too expensive for that. Did you like the way it swatched up, color-wise? The only one I played with was the Bejeweled-and that`s so lively, you can barely tell Amanda`s cap is lacy!

Right now, I have a Diamond vest in Rio, boring Anouk, the sleeves to my silk sweater and a Pingouin bunny sweater at work as WIPs. (The bunny sweater is at work-I kept trying to knit lace on my lunch hour, and then people would come up and speak to me, and I kept getting lost!)

I wanted to make Magic Grid for my MIL-I have swatched it, and I must finish these things in progress. I bought two Pingouin books, and there are some marvelous patterns in mine. Which did you get?

I am SURE whatever you make will be absolutely beautiful, but I think you want something extra special for this yarn. I don`t know what would be "extra special" to a knitter with your high standards and excellent technique. (THAT is a puzzle!) Which magazines do you subscribe to? Maybe something will jump off the pages at you?

Betsy

The taj wool is beautiful. It will be a beautiful baby blanket for a newborn boy. It is so silky and butter smooth. I swatched, 28st/4" with US size 4 (3 1/2mm). I didn`t knit at all yesterday and today. Thinking what will be the next project, between mille fine,Taj and zoom. I had been digesting the pingouin booklets. A lot of nice patterns. What are you going to do with yours?
Shui Kuen

Hi!

Much better, I think! I sent her a package Saturday, she got it yesterday, and she was very excited to see it! (She must have the best mail service in North America!) She wrote me last night, and she`s finally sleeping again, and just feeling a little bit better all the way around.

They had bad weather in her part of the country, so they had some wind and rain damage to Thom`s office, but they are essentially ok, and that is the important part.

What are you working on? What yarn did you make your top down with? I sent Benne some stuff that I bought on sale, and one in particular that I think would interest you-you could even make a Lion sweater with it. I`ll let her tell you about it-I only sent her a little bit-it was what I had left over from a project.

I am kind of in a slow period- I am trying to get some projects done so I can get cranking on a very big Christmas project for my mother in law-2 sweaters (I even have matching pants for the Bayou colored mohair!)

Bets

Ah. I see his point. No machine for you AT THIS time!

The twin leaves was the pattern for the Mirto, wasn`t it? I liked it when I saw it, forgot about it, and looked all over for other patterns. Silly me-that was pretty much what you were looking for.

I usually start with a pattern-sometimes, I`ll wing out on my own, but usually, if I have a pattern, it`s a starting point, and I adjust from there.

b

Hi!

Thanks for the compliments-I was thinking about you while I was working on the machine-I think you would be a good candidate for one.

Does that mean your DK is saying
"You can`t buy a machine THIS month"
"You can`t buy a machine now, because I want to buy you one as a gift later"
or
"No way, you don`t need a machine EVER"?????

(If no machine EVER is what he means, it might be time for him to start drinking REALLY cheap wine!! The kind with a SCREW top, no cork!)

I think I need to struggle to catch up to you! You get to do all these gorgeous wooly sweaters, and I wait around for the lightweight summer things to come in-and then have to balance work and home, and THEN knit!

Did you decide on a pattern for your cotton?

Bets
