Sounds like a great birthday and I`m all about doing more reading these days!

I just read a great book called Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. It`s heavily inspired by 1984 and even more frightening because it`s set NOW and with Gitmo and Patriot Act... tells the story of a 17yr old who`s suspected of being a terrorist and is treated as guilty not innocent til PROVEN guilty.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I had a great bday. We spent a few days up at Lake Tahoe, and I rode on the Gondola at Heavenly for the first time - wow, breathtaking view from the observation deck up there!

Sorry I haven`t been around here as much lately.
Cheryl, as much as I would like to admire your work, I don`t want to increase your workload. Looks like you are busy but having fun - you are so talented!

Marta

Oh, languages - the grammar in Portuguese - and other Latin-based languages, for that matter - is much more complicated than in English, and of course there are some sounds that are very different. My own children, who grew up hearing them at home (we always thought it is an advantage to be exposed to more than one language, even if we were not totally strict about making them speak it all the time) have trouble with pronunciation. But give Matt some time - he`ll pick it up. And it will go much faster if he is not too self-conscious and afraid of making mistakes - better laugh them off...

I wish I was fluent in another language... I speak some German, but far from fluent! I think Portuguese is difficult... Matt is not finding it very easy to pick up either!
I don`t think the gallery does have a web site... Maybe I will try to take some pictures and if they turn out will e-mail them to you!!??
But I am here painting away... Just taking a break to clean my palette and brushes. My oil tangent (I`ve been doing water colors) is a trial to see if I really want to invest in all the supplies to really get involved... I`d like to be able to make my own paints using pure powder pigments. Supplies for oils are just so much more complicated and an oil painting takes sooooo long to finish. There are pros and cons. We will see.....

Thank you, everyone, for the kind words about my Persephone scarf. Like all my designs, it`s really nothing earth-shatteringly new, they`re all just BW-ed or HG-ed, lol.

The scarf feels sooooo nice, I wish I were keeping it for myself, but... T already knows about the scarf. He told me he wanted a scarf in red or green, so I picked up HS in red and green. I asked him which color he would prefer, but didn`t hear back from him. So I just started knitting with the red. About 2 feet into the scarf, he finally gets back to me saying he prefers the red. Whew! Lucky guess on my part. I would have hated to have to start all over again with the green! What drove this scarf is Christmas knitting pressure, I wanted to have it done before Christmas, and I made it with a week to spare. Not bad! :-) Now if only I could get inspired to finish 3 more wash cloths for Christmas gifts..... (one of which I started 2 to 3 months ago, sigh...)

Hmm... wonder what are the chances of T getting the scarf and then deciding he doesn`t really like it.... then I can have it back. ;-) Still don`t know how he will feel about it, I mean the scarf still feels a little more "fem" to me, maybe it`s the narrow width, long length, & the red color. Next time I order more HS, I will have to order more of 5 balls of any color, that way I can make a slightly wider scarf. I always have a hard time figuring out how many balls I need for a project.

BTW, this was my first time knitting with HS, and I love love love love LOVE this yarn. I am looking forward to knitting more with it.

I`m currently knitting with Marly, and omigosh, I love the stitch definition I get with this yarn!!! It`s an "odd" superwash wool, unlike any other superwash wool I`ve worked with and it splits in a funny/different way. I guess I can`t describe it very well.

-Marie
http://smariek.blogspot.com

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful b-day wishes. Les, I love cheesecake and ice cream cakes as well!

I have a lot to tell you all about my birthday weekend. It started on Friday with a well deserved day off at home alone. I made it a mission to finish my windows coat!

Unfortunately, when I sewed up the side seams, stitched down the pockets, knitted both front bands, I decided to try the coat on and HORRORS of HORRORS I discovered that one front was three inches longer than the other front and the back!!! My good friend and knitting buddy counted my rows for me (I was too distraught) and I had 16rows longer.

Soooo, I had to rip out the hem, one front band, and unstitch the pocket, and rip the side seam up to the sleeve. I did this on Friday. I spent Saturday and part of Sunday finishing my beautiful coat and it now fits perfectly! As I was finishing the last few rows of the collar rib, I actually felt sad to be finished with this project. Does anyone else relate to this feeling?

My office manager has a digital camera and I am going to try and take pictures to post here so you can all see this coat. My friend says with global warming, this should be the last heavy coat I knit. She could be right!

BTW, I have been very busy at work. My office has been asked to help out with mental health professionals to meet the Lebonese/Americans at BWI airport. So, I haven`t had time to keep up with all the posts. There has been a lot of wonderful knitting going on here. Bets, AmyQOY, Jayne, SK, SandraD, Presiouspups, Grace and Gail you have all made such beautiful projects!

Patw

To tell you the truth, I have so many things on the needles, I am boggled!! I have the Aran Lace cropped cardi- probably about 6 inches in but it has been sitting in time out! Darned stuff like work and kids sports have been interfering! So, I can`t I`ve done much but print off and read the Sunset cardi pattern.

Hmm, chat etiquette - most of us have set our chat centre to about 5 days worth of messages so it doesn`t take too long to load. So, I think most of the active chatters check a couple of times a day for messages. The messages do seem to get "lost" down the list after a couple of active days!! So, if you don`t get any response to something in a couple of days and you really want to talk about it, ask or comment again with a new message so it rises to the top!! I don`t think that happens very often tho - this is quite a chatty group!
It``s hard keeping track of all of the things you want to try, isn`t it. I have recently made a word file called "Future Projects" and I add pics of things I see that I want to try. I hope it will help.
ttyl
Les

Hi Les,
I don`t recall Carol nor Larry...neither does DH. In the early 90`s, Bob worked in the carpentry dept. for Parks Canada. Since `96, he`s been self-employed (in construction). I`ve kept a pretty low profile, (usually teaching most evenings) and being without kids reduces a lot of functions from my date calendar! Read: Don`t get out much

What further thought have you given to that sunrise jacket? I`m starting to feel overwhelmed (normal) by how many patterns I`d like to do...today, I`m really tempted by the Aran lace cropped cardy! But again, I`d want to make the back longer...easier with this pattern than the Sunrise one, I suspect.

You know, I`m just wondering if you could give me a few pointers on chat etiquette. Of course, I`m not going to say anything that I wouldn`t say to my mother! But what else should I be thinking about? Besides scrolling through all the discussion topics, are there any tricks so that I know when there`s been new messages added to a discussion forum that I`m following? eg. If I put a question out there, and someone responds to it but not for a week or two, how would I know...short of writing down the dates that I posted and checking back that way. Anyway, if you have any warnings/suggestions/tricks up your sleeve, I`d appreciate hearing them.

Billie

And trust that I have tried (only for a while, though) to cross-reference you all to your bio and project pics...there have been some pretty incredible projects, including poor old Green Bear. I should have been keeping notes, though… if I can ever figure out again who made that gotta-try-it shawl (?!!!!), I will definitely be asking for details. And, I now have lots of great ideas for my KoolAid Booga Bag, too. (Thanks for the tips on toning down colors, Suzann). Oh, and Les…I have been here (in Jasper) for about 16 yrs.; Bob (DH) has been here for maybe 27. I laughed at your suggestion that your daughter should check out the A. Just what kind of mother are you to tell your daughter to go to the Athabasca??? LOL (The AthaB is our most popular drinking hole, but you may have meant the Astoria Hotel which is 2nd most popular! I’ve been in the Assiniboine, but for the glug-glug-glug life of me, I can’t remember where it was). Are you recalling your own rebel/glory days??

Anyway, I have to teach soon. So will again say thank you to everyone for the welcome. There is definitely more room in my closet! Billie

Thank you all so much for the kind words of prayer and support. I`m finally getting over the shock of my sister`s death and trying to put my energy into my mother`s upcoming surgery. I really appreciate the support of my knitting friends. It means a great deal.

My relationship with that part of my family is very strained, but it`s difficult being on the opposite side of the world at a time like this. They`ve already had Leilani`s memorial service. They did it quickly for my mother`s sake. She needs to stay as calm as possible until her surgery. She goes to the doctor on Wednesday. We don`t know if they`ll just keep her and do the surgery immediately or if they`ll wait. Personally, I hope they go ahead and get it over with because her heart is breaking over Leilani`s death and this kind of stress just can`t be good.

At any rate, I wanted to drop a note saying thank you for the emails and comments to my blog.

Peace and Prayers,
Jean
Ansbach, Germany

Gerlinde, On this cold snowy morning, I wish you the very best in relation to all the tests you have had. Take this opportunity to get some extra rest; read some extra or do a pleasant knitting project. We wish all the best. Jamie

Gerlinde,

I`m sorry to hear you are having health problems. Tests are also no fun and I hope you are soon through with them with good results. So add a get well, feel better message to your birthday wishes. It might be a good time to get some rest and do some fun knitting. :-}
Benne

You guys really are great. I appreciate the support. It`s so odd because as a vet, I don`t usually panic. As a mother I find myself losing my mind every time I hear the word Mosul come from the TV. I still haven`t heard from Jeremy. I`m sure things are crazy right now as it was the Stryker Brigade (his unit).

Cate, I`m sorry for your community`s loss.

It`s kind of bittersweet around here today as one of the Medic Flight units are coming home in about an hour and yet this attack is on everyone`s mind. Because the guys in this community are helicopter pilots they travel all over so you can imagine there are a lot of worried wives here right now.

Thanks again. I really do appreciate it.

Peace,
Jean
