To tell you the truth, Les, I`ve made two of these shawls and I don`t remember how many rows I knitted. Pitiful, isn`t it? ;-) I didn`t have the correction when I made mine, I just counted stitches. My book says 113 rows but I`ve had it a long time.

I just doublechecked the correction at Interweave Press and here`s what it says:

Continue as above, making yarnovers after first st, before last st, and on each side of the center st every other row until 111 rows have been worked from beginning and ending on RS—231 sts on needle.

That`s weird, I don`t know why they would issue a correction for an already correct pattern. But there`s a lot I don`t understand about some pattern publishers. ;-)

I don`t know, my shawls came out fine, I don`t know what I did except I know I counted stitches. I hope this hasn`t confused everyone. :-)

benne

I think I must have someone living in a 10-mile radius who is in with God and He sends them the right weather and I am just a lucky bystander. ;-} I suspect Tennessee is one of God`s favorite states for trying out weather systems. Let`s see, what happens if I make it 70 degrees followed by near zero temps? Throw in a 70mph wind that will flip Benne`s johnboat completely over and throw it in the creek upside down.
Ok, I want an answer...

1. I live in the NorthEast

2. Benne lives in the South.

3. We can prove this, because if I spill coffee, it will run downhill all the way to Benne`s house. Well, it would if the ocean didn`t get in the way, and if water made right turns...

SOOO

4. Why is it always colder at Benne`s house than it is here? Not a little colder, either. Sometimes TONS colder.

Why?

The only answer I can come up with is

5. God has decided Benne is the better person and deserves more of the sweater weather. Seems fair to me...but still...

Anyone got a better explanation?

T

Hi girls, I am still around, just running my legs off doing mama duck duties. I don`t have much computer time since I`m outside most of the time these days. Okay, duck report. Group #1 - 15 beautiful quackers who are getting their real feathers now and will be ready to start flying in about a week. Group #2 - 9 little guys who still have a lot of down, just starting to show some grown-up feathers. I had 100% hatch rate this year so after some touch and go at hatch time, everyone survived. I have been so busy carrying water, feed, cleaning the baby pool and taking them to the creek (in separate groups because the older ducks are unkind to the babies) that I haven`t gotten much else done. I get up early, start the feeding and watering, and the daily shifts of getting them out of their pens for duck stuff. You know, browsing the grass, chasing butterflies, swimming and running like little banshees around the yard. Then I begin their daily creek outings. I`d like for them to be very familiar with their home before I release them. Yesterday, the older ducks were down at the creek in the section before it opens into the lake and a male wild turkey came strolling through. You should have seen the panic! They thought they looked like lunch to him. They all ran and got under my lawn chair and hunkered down. This whole process ends about 6:30PM, at which point, it`s all I can do to take a shower, eat and fall into bed. As I tell Thom, another day, another set of dirty duck clothes. HA!

I haven`t written any emails, except one to Shui Kuen last night, and just have time to scan the chatsite for my daily dose of elann. I will try and take some pics to post soon. Have I mentioned I`m exhausted??? ;-}
Benne

Bri,

It was just the right time for us to go to the SB. It was one of the things I`d always wanted to do (even if my team wasn`t playing), it was in Atlanta - we drove, we had been saving for a trip, and since our team didn`t have the history or chance to go back like some of the other teams, we figured this was it. AND Tina Turner was going to perform, it was in the stars. ;-} I`m sure your Steelers will be back soon. :-}
Thom was funny, I think judging by my reaction when we won the AFC championship, he thought you`d be as excited as I was. When he asked about my "little friend, Bri" he didn`t mean it as a diminutive remark; anyone under the age of thirty is "little" to him, you know, it`s that Southern thing. ;-}
GO STEELERS!
B2

Benne,
You and Thom are so funny. It was an interesting scene, a lot of sweating and the wind was blowing really hard here. I am safe and mostly intact (the filling is my only issue). Yesterday was intense. I am still in shock to a great extent. I`ve been a lifelong Steelers and Orioles fan. Both have done O.K. in my life-time, though considerably better before I was old enough to enjoy it. It`s just a slice of what Red Sox or White Sox fans experienced, but it was overwhelming. I never thought they would lose, and I got even more confident once I saw the ball go into the hands of Bettis and Ward at critical moments.

I hear what you are saying with the great Titans chase to the Super Bowl. We are at the point where it would be too much of a financial roll of the dice to put it on the line to go. I can only imagine how wild you must have been. I would require the jacket with arms that tie in the back for the plane trip and work days leading up. So, unless something major happens, we are staying here. There are a lot of Steeler bandwagon fans now in the office. Maybe they should come to Heinz Field South for a party...

Bri

Oh yeah, was I watching!!! I rushed home from Mass after discussing football with a couple of my CCD boys who are now in college, put on my sweats and waited impatiently for the game. At one point, when the Steelers intecepted and virtually slammed the door on Denver,, I told Thom, "Bri is running naked through the streets swinging knitting needles above her head, screaming "Takin` the Bus to the Motor City!" ;-} After the game was over Thom seriously asked me (in a very sweeet, concerned voice), "Do you think your little friend Bri will be okay?" HAHAHA! I assured him you were probably more than okay right now. Whatta guy. :-} I`ve got a good feeling about this, after all, the Bus has never been to a Super Bowl, it`s probably his last year... either way, they`re both great teams and I like them both. BTW, Bri, when the Titans went to the Super Bowl, we spent our vacation money and then some to follow them to every playoff game and the Super Bowl and I`ve never regretted it, even though we lost. We decided we didn`t know if they`d ever be back, and we wanted to be there. I didn`t sleep for two days before the game, even with libations. I was a maniac at the game. Shocking, right??? ;-}
B2

The blankie you DID knit WAS the proper one for the twins... now don`t go knitting more, or you know it won`t all fit into the cardinal box, and that would mess up the whole perfectness of everything. THINK THROUGH KID`S EYES: It is the PERFECT cloud-puff of fluff in the PERFECT colors. Fancy stitches would NOT improve these qualities AT ALL. (Anne would not want to hear that you even THOUGHT about changing the twins` blankie! What heresy!)

Thou shalt not render remedies to that which is whole in its perfection and beloved in its present state. Or... if it ain`t broken, don`t go fixin` it. (Had to translate for you Tennesee folks, after readin` yer post below `bout them fancy snots from Hollywood!)

There is some slight possibility the female cardinal will be named Cardinella, not final yet, her mate will politely wait until the lady has a name. The cardinal ornament hangs in a place of honor near a ballerina ornament (i.e.: NOT to be packed away as a Christmas-only item!), and his name is also in-progress at this time.

Hey, last night when we got home from ballet, Anne opened up a box from you, and was she ever thrilled! She named the babies Eric Rene and Anna Lily; they are twins, but she hasn`t decided on last names yet, says that part is always hard. The cardinals do not have names yet, but they will have soon, and they are being fed and well-cared-for. And did you know that Amethyst Lights was Anne`s favorite color of last year`s Outback wools? She is very amazed at how you somehow must`ve known that, and will tresure that little doll blanket forever. Thanks so much!

Plan to combine it with a nice fluffy mohair like the upcoming one. Would 1 ball do it? On the Berrocco site, they use 1 ball of the Opulent FX when combining with another yarn. I can`t gauge this one for myself bc I haven`t even seen this yarn so any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks! Joan

OK by that I mean you have the stuff you need to get by without electricity. Like a campstove or a bbq, and some bottled water and food and stuff like that. When the electricity went out on the north eastern part of the US 2 yrs ago there were several people here in my area that didnt know what to do. Honestly it was really great to see all of the people come out of thier houses and talk to the neighbors and the kids riding the bikes in the neighborhood.

Libby

I really feel for those folks in Mississippi and Alabama. I`m watching the weather channel now, Thom has filled water containers for us, I have oil lamps, a coleman cook stove that`s really cool, lots of batteries and the duckies are all safe in their pens with food and water. And, of course, I have lots of yarn to knit. :-} We have plenty of food and a generator for the fridge and freezer. We were in Nashville today for Thom`s dad`s 90th birthday party and on the way home on 1-40 we saw an entire fleet of emergency workers, power company trucks and FEMA looking trucks headed your way. They had a blue-light police escort and they were booking. Lots and lots of trucks and people on their way to help out. I hope you don`t need those power line workers. If I`m not here for a day or two, you`ll know what happened, lights out. :-}
Benne

Hi Evelyn,

Thanks for your kind words, I hope we get to meet one of these days. I`m glad you found us. :-} This group is extraordinary, and I`m so grateful to have found this site and all these wonderful women. Shui Kuen`s DH says we would all be a good case study. :-} I was thinking about that yesterday and thought, you know, we would be a good subject for a thesis on women, group dynamics, and what happens when a group sharing a common interest comes together. We go so far beyond the knitting, although most of us have never met, our mutual support and caring as a group and individuals is phenomenal.

Ev, you have a red fox! That`s great! You are very fortunate to have a greenspace. Some cities wouldn`t have much greenspace if it weren`t for cemetaries, which makes me think think, darn good thing people chose burial over cremation, and it`s the one thing city governments have a hard time bulldozing. ;-} Foxes are suffering from loss of habitat, food sources, and displacement from the increase in coyote populations and range. I really like foxes, they eat a lot of mice and moles, voles and the like and are so beautiful. You are wise to keep your kitties inside. Jinx is an inside cat because I don`t want him to disappear and I also don`t want him bellying up to my bird feeders like he`s at a cafeteria. I can just imagine what he thinks when he watches my feeders. "Oh, let`s see, do I want a light meal of Chickadee delight or do I want to go for a full feast of Cardinal ambrosia." lol
Benne

About the AV... I agree with Bets....start on the front or back first to get a good hold on the lacy part....those stupid YO really sneak up on you and then all of a sudden you miss one and you have to frog. I had this happen more than once! The other thing I did was I figured out what the stitch count would be after each and every decrease row and then made sure that I had that # on the needle to eliminate frogging later on.

Also if you run out of yarn in the lacy section, attach the new ball at the beginning of the row..... its a real bear to weave in the ends on the lace and hide it effectively.

About the cast on... I`m hoping that the blocking will take care of that. I did the long tail cast on and started with a purl row but that did now seem to help with the curling. I`m holding out for blocking now....cuz I`m not redoing it now....

If I think of anythign else I`ll let you know

OH and you HAVE to do the sleeves at the same time. Its the only way to get through all that stupid lace.

Really its quite lovely when its all said and done but you actually have to knit the thing and after awhile it gets old!

OH and you have to do the cables with out the needle. It will go much faster.

Libby

Elaine,

It`s the combination of a log house in a big woods. Log houses breathe and the logs contract and expand according to weather. And even though it`s tight it`s impossible to fill every crevice on a permanent basis. Well, I guess we could if we brick veneered it. lol And I simply have more critters of all kinds than a neighborhood does. I don`t mind the lizards who are indoor/outdoor "pets." They eat a ton of bugs and are generally very well behaved except for a little lizard poop on the windowsills from time to time.

Talking about flat tires. I`ve only had three ever and I never had to change one either. I am not above looking like a helpless female if it keeps me from breaking a nail. ;-} Hey, isn`t that why God gave men the male ego so women could take advantage of it? HAHAHA! Oh, I`m bad, bad, bad. :>D
Benne

Benne,
The floor to ceiling is the way to go. One could switch the summer yarns and winter yarns top to bottom. It is exactly what I am going to do, for sure. Tell Tom, I did not get a flat, I did have one once and thank goodness for cells. I wouldn`t change a tire even if I knew how, which I don`t.

You live in a log cabin that`s cool! I am not to sure that I would like critters who could get into my house. I would think the dogs would keep them away! I know mine would. lol

I was trying that clapotis on my machine and realized that I will have to move the sts now in order for it to fit. I quickly read the directions and saw the sts count at 107 so I figured I was safe but nope. I only have 114 needles and after you reach 107 you have to decrease one side and increase the other. I will think about it, maybe not worth the trouble. I may leave it for the no brainer knitting at the TV. We will see. Next though is do I really need one! lol

Elaine

Elaine,

I am thinking I will have Thom build shelves that hold my bins and then bookshelves separate. Still undecided on that but I live in the boonies and every critter with legs and some without try to get into our log house. So I keep my yarn in plastic bins. I was thinking extra deep on the bin shelves too. My sewing room is pretty small and I still have to be able to get my sewing machine and serger in it. Not to mention the cupboard full of fabric and quilt tops. I`m thinking floor to ceiling. lol

Oh gosh, your husband found the trunk stash! Thom and I were laughing about your trunk stash the other day. We were talking about all the places the elannites hide yarn and he said he hoped you didn`t get a flat. Thom knows all (well, most) of our chatsite secrets and I`ve sworn him to secrecy and under no circumstances is he to reveal anything to any other DH or DSO. BTW, I don`t think it`s fair for your yarn budget to be taken out of the home repair budget. ;-} I`m thinking of claiming Ann and Robert on my income tax this year as dependents. LOL!!!
Benne

You raised a good question, I have been looking for shelves for what seems like decades. I thought about the wire baskets but I hate when the loose ends fall through or smaller balls slip down to the next bin. I may have them built so I can have them extra deep. I also wanted a section for my books. I hate to spend my money doing that when I deserve to use it to buy more yarn! lol By the way my husband went into the trunk of my car and found 3 hefty trash bags, thank God he checked them before tossing. Filled to the brim with yarn! Oh well it could be worse.
I wish it were warm here, I am so tired of the snow.
Elaine

Elaine, I`m sorry you missed your pinks. They were very tempting. I was glad when I saw they were gone so I couldn`t have a weak moment and order the hot pink. :-} I`ll bet Ann has something equally as good cooked up for us in the coming months. Maybe your room will be finished too.

A new yarn room, that`s exciting! I`m going to redo my sewing room this spring. I`d love to hear your ideas and thoughts on shelves, storage, etc. My DH *is* great, can you believe it, he came home today with plastic storage bins for me that are light enough and small enough for me to lift when they`re full of yarn! They`re twelve gallons with a clear bottom so I can see what`s inside. But, he does roll his eyes too. This is so funny, today we planted tomato seeds in peat pots and we were looking for a little fine soil to dust over the top of the seeds. Thom opened my little gardening bench and what`s inside but YARN! He started laughing very hard and said, "It`s everywhere!" Of couse I use it to tie up plants and it`s not the good stuff. lol

Keep us posted on your clapotis on the machine. I`m not up to it but some of the others are Bond girls who really get their machines smokin` like you do.

Have a good weekend, it`s warm here and I have Spring fever even if it is going to rain. :-}
Benne

Benne, Your husband sounds great! My husband looks at the boxes and rolls his eyes. I am sure, I am not the only one who has a room full of yarn. I am in the process of redoing my yarn room, so I have packed up almost all of it and taken over the basement. I get lonely up here for my yarn and seeing all the great stuff on elann makes me buy more! I wanted the Alba yarn and made the mistake of making the order but running off to do laundry before sending it in. When I finally realized my error it was gone. Those pinks kept me up at night! Oh well, maybe another color will do.

After seeing the clapotis (weird name) I was thinking about trying to do it on the machine. I have downloaded the pattern and will try it out later. Enjoy your knitting!
Elaine
